+LittleFirDay
I'd like to thank everybody who has provided information on making homemade geocoins in these forums. Especially to MountainMudbug's tutorial online at http://www.geocities.com/graphixoutpost/geocoins.html Here is a photo of our homemade wooden nickels and polymer clay geocoins They all have our team name, "Little Fir Day," on the front, and then have different backs: * "WE FOUND IT!" * "FTF" * "5-STAR CACHE" * "GEOCACHING FIND 50" We put our 5-star cache geocoins in caches we enjoy finding the most to let the owner know we rate their cache highly. I've placed tips and tricks I learned while making the coins online at How We Made Our Homemade Geocoins Quote Link to comment

+ohgr
Only problem I have found is that with the Sculpey clay coins is that they can get soft again after they've been sitting in a hot ammo can out in the sun. Ohgr Quote Link to comment
+sbell111
Really, I haven't seen a problem. Perhaps they'll get soft if they are not 'cooked' long enough. Quote Link to comment

Ohgr I've never heard of this happening. If the polymer clay is baked correctly, I don't think it's possible. --Marky Quote Link to comment
+Marky
For some other examples of polymer clay sig items, check out the ones at www.sigitem.com. Look at the detail on workerofwood's token. If you are in the SF Bay Area, you can attend workerofwood's polymer clay workshop on April 2nd. Here is a pic of one of his sig tokens: --Marky Quote Link to comment
+Marky
Thanks for posting the link to your how to page, that gives me a lot of good ideas. --Marky Quote Link to comment
+ohgr
We "cooked" them as per the Sculpey instructions, is there some other curing time involved other than that. Also about what thickness are your coins? Thanks, Ohgr Quote Link to comment
+sbell111
Mine are kinda think, much thicker than workerofwood's. I haven't had any problems with mine 'softening'. Quote Link to comment
+fly46
I was thinking of making something out of clay, but It's going to be a while now since I'm broke as hell and sick as a dog. Taking ideas now, though. Quote Link to comment

Hope you feel better soon and congratulations on your 2000th post. On topic: I have sig wooden nickels, but I like the idea of creating something for those special caches. I just might have to look into doing this. Quote Link to comment
+LittleFirDay
My clay coins are about 1/8" thick. 1/4" seems it would be too thick for my preference. I'd like to try 3/16", because maybe the coins wouldn't try to stretch as much when I take them off the mold. Quote Link to comment

Ohgr Sculpy and FIMO are polymer clays, actually PVC, same stuff as sprinkler pipes. So they will handle heat in an ammo box quite well. Most plastics will soften a little in heat though, and they could warp or deform slightly. Quote Link to comment

+Tidalflame
Neat. I'm going to try making some metal geocoins of my own... they'll be fairly simple since I'll be making them by hand, but they should be a neat item to place in a cache. Quote Link to comment
