+olbluesguy
I have a Magellan Trailblazer that I have been using since about 1995,and has served me well. My question is,What are the differences between my old gps and what is on the market now? I'm thinking of getting a new unit, but I don't know how much better the new ones are compared to my old one. btw,I just found this site, and I think its GREAT! Quote Link to comment
+welch
if you run a search im sure youll come up with lots of threads discussing which unit is *best* as for whats different about new units, i think theres two thing. 1. almost all new units go to three digits past the point .XXX vs .XX 2. the other is that new units are 12 channel, meaning (as i understand it)they can get and hold "locks" from up to twelve sats. old units could hold like 2 so they had to find a sat. lock on take reading then drop it and find another and repeat. since you need at least 3 sats to get your position being able to hold onto more sats. Allows the unit to update your position much quicker. Quote Link to comment
+PDOP's
The newer units are more power efficient. Most only use 2 AA's which will last longer than many of the old 4 battery units. Also some can upload and display maps and have WAASwhich increases accuracy. Quote Link to comment
+Alan2
Go to the manufacturers' web sites and check the features of their different models. Garmin is www.garmin.com. I don't know what Magellan is but a search should get it. Good luck. Alan Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
Magellan is Thales Navigation. http://www.thalesnavigation.com "You can't make a man by standing a sheep on its hind legs, but by standing a flock of sheep in that position, you can make a crowd of men" -Max Beerbohm Quote Link to comment
+TeamVE
I'm not sold on WAAS yet. I use the plain old yellow Garmin eTrex and it often seems like it holds the lock better than my brother-in-law's new eTrex Venture with WAAS. Accurracy is nice, but if you can't hold a lock that doesn't matter much Quote Link to comment
team bubbletree
I see you havent loged any finds yet on your page. I think after a few you will get so addicted that you will end up with more GPS units than remote controls at home even if they are only a year old. Glad to see another cacher in Pennsylvania maybe I will see you on the trails. Quote Link to comment
