Hambone
I am considering purchasing a pair of frs/gmrs for me and my girlfriend to use during an upcoming geo event. I am interested in getting the GMRS (haven't decided if I'll get the license or not). I was checking on ebay and saw this pair: and wanted to know if this would be a good set. I saw where they had 2 watts of power where most standard units only have 2. Any suggestions or recommendations?? Quote Link to comment
Criminal
I can't see the auction you link to, as ebay can't get through the AF firewall, but I would suggest you stick with a name brand like motorola. Get the license. Quote Link to comment
BlueDeuce
Motorola or Uniden Never anything that requires AAA batteries. Edited May 25, 2004 by Elf Danach Quote Link to comment
Hambone
They are a pair of Midland (decent name brand) G-225. They have 22 channels (7 frs and 15 gmrs) Quote Link to comment
BlueDeuce
(ahem) Battery Type: 4 AAA batteries Reviews at a large web seller give it 1 and half stars (out of 5) Quote Link to comment
Hambone
Is there a web site that actually reviews these? Quote Link to comment
briansnat
Check www.epinions.com. They may have reviews. A ski magazine reviewed FRS radios a few years ago and Kenwood rated the highest and Radio Shack's brand was the best buy. But that was about 4 years ago, so I don't think that's valid anymore. +jillian
I found a great deal at Outbackware for midlands... and have been happy with them so far, even without the licence or using the channels that would need it. Quote Link to comment
JT & PJ Cole
I have Motorola rechargables and have had good luck with them. The advice about AAA batteries is good, they cannot supply enough current for a meaningful length of time. Edited May 25, 2004 by JT & PJ Cole Quote Link to comment
Mud Puppy
I tried out a number of "less expensive" radios before buying and found the sounds quality of the motorolas to be superior. Quote Link to comment
TotemLake
Yep me too. I even bought a Fire Fox throat mic because most radio mic's are unable to handle my modulation very well. The throat mic works great! I barely notice it is there after a few minutes and I get very little ear fatigue from the button speaker although Fire Fox does sell an ear hook as a separate accessory to allow the button speaker to float over the ear. +TotemLake
Sorry - should have done that in the first place. I'll blame it on the lateness of the evening. Fire Fox Cabelas.com has the name reversed. Bass Pro Shop also carries it. These are single transponder units. You can pick up double transponder from other vendors. You'll need to do a search for "throat mic" Quote Link to comment
LETaylor
If there's a Costco nearby they had a good price on the Motorola T5950 radios. ($59.00 for the set with rechargable batteries and a desk charger) Plus there's a $15.00 rebate available from Motorola (I think through the end of this month) They have all the FRS/GMRS channels as well as NOAA Weather channels. I've been delighted with mine. Quote Link to comment
Cherokeecacher
I just saw these at sam's club a few hours ago for $79.99. The web page does not mention it, but the package did, that you can also use AA alkaline or NiHM batteries. I have always had good luck with the talk About radios. Just FYI Quote Link to comment
