+prizmski Posted March 20, 2003 Share Posted March 20, 2003 This is a bit of a silly question, but I've got to ask. I'm wondering what the proper pronunciation is for standard GPS coordinates. A coordinate like: N 43 23.212 W 117 23.312 or similar, what is the proper pronunciation of the numbers? The first number is obviously degrees "forty-three degrees", but what about the xx.xxx numbers? Are these minutes and seconds like with astronomy? Sorry for the newbie question, but I'm curious! +brad.32 Posted March 21, 2003 Share Posted March 21, 2003 In astronomy, terrestrial, martian, etc, coordinate systems, the lon/lat coordinates are written 37d25m38s, 37d25m38.087s, 37d25.63m, 37d25.635m, 37.42725d, etc, where you would read degrees for d, minutes for m, and seconds for s. Of course, in astronomy the equivalent of longitude is right ascension and that's written h m s. ... and don't believe that second coordinate as far as you can throw your computer. Actually Geo-Trekker the .212 and .312 are decimal fractions of 1 minute (60 sec) so the correct number of seconds is .212 x 60 = 12.72 seconds and .312 x 60 = 18.72 seconds.
