Cache Out With Trash?

Locally, we had a cache archived before it was a week old because someone (not related to geocaching) was cleaning up for Earth Day and 'cleaned up' the cache. Apparently the guy read the 'About Geocaching' sheet but decided geocaches were trash. Has this ever happened to you? Has your cache been picked up as trash by accident. Has anyone ever CITO'd a cache by accident?

How would you find out about that? If the guy just threw it away how would you know it was CITO vs old fashioned theft?

One of our very first caches disappeared after the area was cleaned up. It had been in a big knot hole at the base of a tree along the edge of a creek. It was there for weeks, completely concealed in the hole by leaves, sticks and other natural debris. It disappeared right around the time workers came along and raked up all the leaves, dead grass, etc in the area...apparently someone felt the hole needed cleaning out as well. :( We don't know for sure that's what happened, but it's our best guess.

It was a bummer because it was a great cache, a good container, and it had a camera in it that was just about full and ready for developing. Plus it was our first hide.
