moe3rd
I have a eTrex Legend, but I have to hold it horizontally to pickup a signal. I am looking for a unit that will pick up a signal regardless of the position it is in. I run a Bloodhound for the Sheriff's Office and it is very difficult to hold onto him and hold the gps too. +JeepCachr
How about just using a holster that holds the GPS in the correct position. You could also try a unit with an external antenae. I'm not sure if the legend supports that, then you could clip the antenae to your hat or pack or somewhere. Another option is re-radiating antenae and that should work with any GPS. Link to comment
moe3rd
I thought about the holster idea, but I don't think there are any available that hold the unit face up in the horizontal position. Basically I would like to be able to hang the thing around my neck and be able to pick it up anytime and get the info without waiting for it to find the satelite signals. Maybe I am wanting to much from a GPS. I am new to the equipment. I will sell the Legend and buy something that will meet my needs if it is even available. What is re-radiating the antenna and how do you do that? Link to comment

This is also true. If you have trouble in tree cover the external anteana is the best way to fix that issue See your other thread. I know the GPS V and 60C & CS support external antaneas. Others I don't know enough about to say one way or the other. Link to comment

Anytime you have the gps close to your body you will be blocking some signal (and if you add that to signal lose due to terrain or cover, it might be enough to totally lose your lock...) The external on your hat idea sounds good if you must have lock at all times. But I don't think you can attach such a thing to any of the etrex. Link to comment
+briansnat
I have Garmin's carrying case for the eTrex. It clips to the top of the shoulder strap of my pack and sits horizontally there. If this is not an option for you, its only the eTrex and Gecko lines that must be held horizontal. Most other GPS's aren't so sensitive. The GPS V has a detachable antenna and is a great value these days, since the 60C came along. Link to comment
+dino_hunters
basically, postion maters to EVERY gps. Link to comment
SBPhishy
Is everyone anti-Magellan? The Meridian and SporTrak series have Quad Helix antennas that are made to be held in a vertical position. They work find if you hold them at a 45 degree angle or more though. Holding them flat wouldnt be the best, but you seem to be having a problem doing that anyway. That can be held much more naturally and still keep a great lock. An external antenna mounted in a hat is probably a good idea. A re-radiating antenna is an external antenna that can be used with a GPS unit that does not have an external antenna jack. It radiates the signal to the GPS. Link to comment
jfreeman_bsj
My Legend seems to work OK held vertically. I wasn't aware that it was supposed to be held horizontally. Link to comment
Micqn
My Maggy works when it is horizontal, vertical, upside down and backwards (though it's hard to read). Link to comment
