+RogofLap Posted September 27, 2003 Posted September 27, 2003 I am looking for a website that has tracks/Routes of hiking trails that can be downloaded for free? Does anyone know of any? Thanks, Rog Quote
+canadazuuk Posted September 27, 2003 Posted September 27, 2003 If you do a find for 'trails download' (or some similar variation) you may find quite a few matches that may or may not get listed here again... depending on where you are, there may be some great downloads Quote
+Touchstone Posted September 28, 2003 Posted September 28, 2003 Boy, let me know if you find it. I was out caching on Friday at Ft. Ord, CA (abandoned by the Army a few years ago, now BLM) and was trying to navigate off my old Topo CD stuff. Problem is that so many trails have been constructed since the CD came out that it was getting hard to know where the trails went. Quote
+briansnat Posted September 28, 2003 Posted September 28, 2003 National Geographic has downloadable routes for their Topo! maps. I don't know if they can be downloaded to a GPS though. I haven't tried. "You can't make a man by standing a sheep on his hind legs. But by standing a flock of sheep in that position, you can make a crowd of men" - Max Beerbohm Quote
+Alan2 Posted September 28, 2003 Posted September 28, 2003 NG Topo has wonderful trails already tracked for you on their we page. Of course you have to have their Topo program to displaye the track and convert it to a route to load it into your GPS. If you are downloading their trails from areas that you do not have their topo for, you can still convert it to a route and download it into you GPS as a route and then into your PC for display on your GPS mapping program. In this latter case, you don't get all the features of NG but you can still create the routes for you GPS. But you need at least one of NG Topo programs. ALan Quote
+Team Lightfoot Posted September 28, 2003 Posted September 28, 2003 You can also download NG Topo trail overlays from the hike reviews at localhikes.com. Quote
+Alan2 Posted September 28, 2003 Posted September 28, 2003 How do you do that? Do you have to be a member? Alan Quote
+Team Lightfoot Posted September 28, 2003 Posted September 28, 2003 Go to one of the hike reviews, click the link for the trail map. At the bottom of the map is a link to download the .tpo overlay file. Quote
McKenzie Clan Posted September 28, 2003 Posted September 28, 2003 Does NG Topo cover Canada also??? Scott Quote
+Criminal Posted September 28, 2003 Posted September 28, 2003 When I was planning the hike to this cache, I noticed the trail was shown in Garmin's Mapsource Topo. After I got home, I overlaid the tracks and it was remarkably accurate. DO NOT click on the link if you live anywhere flat, arid, or otherwise and boring. http://fp1.centurytel.net/Criminal_Page/ Quote

+Mark 42 Posted September 28, 2003 Posted September 28, 2003 If you have a specific area in mind, you can try posting the question in the forum for your region... I found a lot of trail maps on mountain biking websites in my area. If you're in the Seattle area, I may still have some links. Also, try a search for the specicfic location with "Trail map" tacked on (e.g. "Banner Forest Trail Map") on Google http://www.google.com That was actually how I found GeoCaching! Quote
vagabond Posted September 29, 2003 Posted September 29, 2003 If I'm looking for trail heads or trails I usually use USAphotomaps, I know it is a little outdated and won't have new trails but it works very well for me, especially when I download the cache locations. then I have an idea of where I want to start the cache hunt. +RogofLap Posted September 30, 2003 Author Posted September 30, 2003 This is a place we can start our own collection of tracks/routes. Check it out... http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GPS_Trails Quote
+BeachBuddies Posted September 30, 2003 Posted September 30, 2003 You can also try LocalHikes.com. I think the .TPG files there can be downloaded. Either way, there's lots of good info on various trails. Many geocachers contribute to that site. Quote
