How not to place a cache

Recommended Posts

Uhhhh, the cache was placed less than two weeks ago???? Give it a chance... the early DNF logs say that the owner needs to check the coordinates. I wouldn't hunt it until I see a note posted from the owner. That would hold me back more so than the description of poison oak. The cache page didn't seem all that bad.

Looks fine to me also. The warning about poison oak is nice...I'd rather know to keep a look out for it then come home itching.

This area has a very large number of Goecachers, most new caches in the area get as many as 7 or8 hits the first week. The two who posted the DNF were looking together.

I suspect that's why no one else has tried finding it. If I saw DNF on a newly placed cache I'd be inclined not to drive out of my way to find it until I was SURE it was still there.

No need to warn about poison ivy in my area- you can't have a cache without it. Some places worse than others, but all places infected. If we talked about all the problems, no one would ever come to Southern Illinois.

To list a few:

Poison Ivy

Ticks

West Nile Virus (in dogs)

Copperheads

Cottonmouth

rattlesnakes (two types)

Rednecks

College Students

Hill Kittys

I could go on, but I want visitors.

Ahhh another fine post by the self proclaimed cache/GPS expert! And the point of this post was? Be careful patting yourself on the back at your seminar you may hurt yourself.

Just remember. Getting there is half the fun...

Well. I did not say I was an expert on GPS, but I started selling them when the first

consumer Magellan models hit the market around the time of the first gulf war. I would

be suspect of anyone who claimed to be an expert on anything, I have known many so

called experts over the years. Most of them had not learned anything in their field for

some time, because they felt they knew it all. As far as Geocahing, it is not that hard to

set up a seminar to teach people about geocaching and bring more people into the hobby.

Of course you will have to set up some caches for them to find and teach them what to

look for. I had 15 students for my May seminar and it looks like I will have more for the

next one in July.

Lets face it, it is not hard to find a cache. I would like to know how many seminars Team

5-oh has given. For that matter, I would like to know how many seminars other

Geocachers have given.

I have given about 47 seminars in the past 20 or so years. Thats nice you started selling the maggies when they first hit the market. I wonder if anyone else started selling them about that time as well? I am curious why you would like to know how many seminars others have given? Are you looking for more reasons to pat yourself on your back? And you never did mention why you started this thread...

The cache has a difficulty of 3 stars. The Kash Kommandos have found 20 plus caches. It wasn't found by the first hunter (the second couldn't get sat lock, so lets not even consider that a 'no find').

There's no real reason to jump to the conclusion that this one is missing. It is probably still in place. Why don't you go try to find it. While your at it, go after this nearby cache.

icon_rolleyes.gif Hmmm So I guess I better not place a cache with a description:

Very overgrown area, please bring machatee to cut a tunnel through the poison oak and ivy. Once at the cache you may need a few bottles of Raid to spray off the scorpions on the cache container, although the black widows may have taken care of the scorpions. Inside the cache you will find 10 broken mc'toys and 5 semi-used burger king crown hats. icon_eek.gif

Hahahahaha sorry I couldn't resist!

The comment "there's plenty of poison oak, but it's easy to avoid" wouldn't dissuade a San Diego cacher for a minute. Any cache remotely near a creek is going to be surrounded by the stuff. I'd just be excited because he'd said it was avoidable!

May question about seminars was just that a question re Geocaching seminars, there are lots of people who have bought GPSR that never use them. SOme of these people have an interest in Geocaching but are not sure how to get started. I have not heard from many people who are doing Geocaching seminars, it's a good way to bring new people into the hobby. All it takes is setting up some caches that the students can cover in a short amout of time and two or three people to show them the way. We spend about an hour showing them samples of what caches may look like, then we give them printed out copies of the cache discriptions from the Geocaching web site and send them on thier way, most of our students have finished find the caches in about 90 minutes.

As far as why I started the thread, believe it or not. I do not remember. Must be getting old.

This is too funny. Take a look at my latest cache and tell me if this doesn't sound familiar. I wonder where this "couldn't find it so cache must be missing" attitude comes from. I'm sure a lot more people searched for my cache the first week but couldn't own up to defeat, since in my area people descend on a new cache in droves just to be FTF. No wonder I love this game so much!
