  1. Well I tried out the GSAK and was really impressed, I am only using it to about 10% of it's potential but that is ok. I did manage to get the waypoints in there and export them to my microsoft S&T and Delorome SA 2005+ so that was the main thing I was trying to muddle through! I will check out the other software suggestions too, in particular the USAPhotomaps sounds pretty interesting, I will make it my next download. Thanks alot everyone for all the help you saved me hours and handfuls of hair! John Edit: I found this site while looking for the USAPhotomaps... it looks like they might have some interesting software: http://www.digitalgrove.net/Toolbox_mappers.htm
  2. Very good thank you all for your help, I knew I was missing something! basically I think it was not knowing that I needed to convert the .loc to way points. I realize the mapping isn't going to put me exactly where I need, etc. but if it did then this would not be any fun! Thanks for all the responses, now I am pointed in the direction that I was hoping! I forgot to mention that all the hardware and software is stuff I also am using for travel and camping and geo'ing, kinda the 2 birds with one stone thing! Thanks again! John
  3. LOL well my poor GeoMobile is a F-350 Duallie Crew Cab Diesel!! hahahaha so I am trying to cut down on the driving!! Guess I needs to eats me spinach! Guess I could take the wifes Expedition (yeah like that thing is good on gas)! uhg!
  4. Ok, I am not a newbie but I updated alot of my mapping software and am trying to now use my laptop while driving to map to the cache (getting tired of my gps telling me to turn into a fence, when I kind of need a road!!). My software I have is: Microsoft Streets and Trips 2005 <-just bought Delorme Street Atlas 2005 Plus <-just bought Easy GPS ( I have been using this just to put waypoints into the handheld gps) Mapsend (old version from 1999) (I own and registered all these - they are not bootlegs, etc. except Easy GPS I am using the Free Version of it.) My handheld GPS's I own are: Magellan Meridian Platinum <- I use this one under heavy tree cover Garmin Venture <- I use this when not much tree cover or need to be stealthy Gps that sits on the dash: Microsoft/Pharos <- just got with the Street&Trips haven't even tried it yet. Anyway any help with my combination I would really appreciate... I tend to find myself spending more time trying to find the cache (in the car) then the actual hiking and finding the container!! so I am trying to cure this! Thanks alot, John Team Spending Time, Saving Cache
  5. quote:Actually I don't think it's that ignorant. I didn't even think about guns when I started reading this thread, probably because I'm Canadian. I see Seneca is from my neck of the woods so perhaps it didn't occur to him either. For the record, the only time I felt vulnerable was when I (a female) was alone on a trail on the side of a mountain, looking at an abandoned cabin and realizing it was getting dark and what would happen if somebody untoward came upon me. It was also the location of a recent bear sighting. I descended to my car and went home immediately. I actually meant the way that he put it "little boys" and "bang-bangs" was ignorant. You post a msg about personal safety/etc and do not think guns will come up? LOL Maybe that was not directed toward me, but it seems like it because I started the gun issue. Oh well I have tough skin . I am not a gun person per say. I do own a few, I do not hunt but rather I target shoot at the local indoor range. I do not go around waving them etc. I do know this, I would like to have one in my hand if someone is going to bean me over the head though. I too support the right to own guns but I support the right to pick my nose in private or public As Forest Gump would say "That's all I got to say about that". Live to Cache... 7. I am constantly looking over my shoulder, call me paranoid but who knows who is wondering in the woods... there are quite a few "Woods people" around here that are on benders and things. I have been honestly been thinking about getting my carry permit for when I cache alone. Crappy thing is then I would have to get a smaller weapon because a 9mm isn't very easy to conceal, maybe a little 38 or a .380. Live to Cache... 8. Renegade, Good thought, I left that out on my cache descriptions! I am going to edit them now Thanks Live to Cache... Cache to Live... & Doing it with a Meridian Platinum and Garmin Venture (backup)

  10. But can they beat the $1.75? Of course walmart will not have those forever so sooner or later I will be getting them from Strong Live to Cache... Cache to Live... & Doing it with a Meridian Platinum and Garmin Venture (backup)
  11. Hey and welcome aboard! I am down in St Pete not too far from you... So far I have about 22 or so finds and have not had any run ins with police or anyone asking me anything. I do not try and go stealth or anything but then again I do not hold the gps over my head and jump up and down You will get the hang of it, and if you do get questioned just show them the printed maps (if you are using them off mapquest or whatever) and explain to them what you are doing, etc. should not be a problem though! 12. Cool, tonight at the local walmart in the electronic section I was scrounging through the clearance junk and found some Belkin - Palm M100 screen protectors (12 pack) on sale for $1.75 reg. $9.95 so I brought them home and they were just a little to big for my Magellan Plat. so I trimmed it down and it works great. The little kit came with a cloth to wipe the screen down and a credit card type thing to smooth out the protector. Cheap protection if your looking for it... check your local wallymart PS sorry if this has been posted before Live to Cache... 13. Reading most of these messages started frightening me so I went to the site and checked on mine. I purchased my Magellan on 5-19 and sent the rebate probably on the 20th or 21st... according to their site it says approved and has the little check mark. So I guess I am in good shape! 14. quote:Originally posted by Johnnyvegas:This is a cache in my area, only two people have even looked for . My guess is the mention of all the Poison Oak by the cache. I am going to mention this in my next Geocahing seminar on how not to Hide/Post a cache. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=70563 Hmmm So I guess I better not place a cache with a description: Very overgrown area, please bring machatee to cut a tunnel through the poison oak and ivy. Once at the cache you may need a few bottles of Raid to spray off the scorpions on the cache container, although the black widows may have taken care of the scorpions. Inside the cache you will find 10 broken mc'toys and 5 semi-used burger king crown hats. Hahahahaha sorry I couldn't resist! Live to Cache... Cache to Live...
  15. Quote Marky: Ticks are rather slow moving, and take a while to find an appropriate site to burrow in. It sounds like you are just a little paranoid. (Not that you shouldn't be.) I was not saying they would burrow in as I watched I would guess that they were hauling a** up my legs because I did have some deet around my ankels... but that evening we all had one or two on our upper thighs or middle of our backs. LOL I wasn't paranoid until they were running up my legs like I was standing in an ant pile!!!! (True story I am not exagerating here at all). I saw a wild turkey right were all this was going on, so I can't imagine how many that poor thing had on him. Live to Cache... Cache to Live...
  16. It was up to $1.50 gal around here and now it has dropped to about $1.35 now. This makes me glad I got rid of my 3/4 Ton Dodge Ram Club Cab with 8' Bed (that thing was 22' long and a gas guzzler because of the 360 cu engine!!) I now cache in my Nissan Xterra Suv and it gets much better mileage! Live to Cache... Cache to Live...
  17. I asked our Doctor what type of insect repellent I could use on my 6 month old and he stated that the best and most non-harmful thing is Avon Skin So Soft. He said that deet is not good for someone that young and also alot of babies have a reaction to the chemical. Live to Cache... Cache to Live...
  18. http://www.compuplus.com/insidepage.php3?sid=67h7v1qk6beh4s6&id=819 $257 they are out of NJ I got mine there and overnighted it and got it as scheduled. I would deal with them again. I dont think you will find it new for under the $255 mark. Live to Cache... Cache to Live...

But in this family sport, I haven't tried to put a cache INSIDE A FRIGGIN' BAR!!! Geesh. 21. I just got denied on a cache I place because they said it is too close to another (which I knew when I placed it). I was very polite to the approver and explained that the GPS indeed show it very close but there is a lake in between which really to get from one to the other is like a 1/4" walk or more... I am still waiting to hear back, if that still won't get it approved then I will move it, not a big deal. Just keep cool and be polite, there probably is a valid concern about the placement or something - Communication is everything. Live to Cache... Cache to Live...

  23. Hey all, I was wondering I see that some people list all the items in their cache at the start of the cache and others do not list what is in them. My question is this, do you find it better not to list the stuff or list it? Do you get more visits by not listing because people are curious? I am just wondering the pro's and cons.. I am about to place our 1st cache very soon Thanks! Live to Cache... Cache to Live...
