  1. See my entry from today (7.22.09) http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...c4-c8de0ea5f5d3
  2. I'm looking for someone who has an iFinder and uses MMC cards with it. I'm trying to find out if any special software is needed to download waypoint data to the iFinder, or if any old MMC card reader and MMC card will do. Basically I'm trying to avoid paying the big bucks for Lowrance's MapCreate and card reader if all I need is the read/writer and an MMC card.
  3. I did one similar to what you proposed....the first leg is a microcache with a URL to a web page I created. Once there, you hear morse code which tells you where the cache is.
  4. I can live with FTF, TNLN, and TFTC, but at the rate things are going, are all our log entries eventually going to be acronyms? I finally figured out that TNLNSL must mean "took nothing left nothing signed log". Um...isn't signing the log required to log a find? Do we really need to state the obvious on that one? I'm imagining we'll start seeing similar things in the future -- OCTNLNSL - Opened cache took nothing left nothing signed log. AACOCTNLNSL - arrived at cache + OCTNLNSL GOOCAHTC - got out of car and headed toward cache (in hopes of AACOCTNLNSL) HCBTB - hid cache better than before WFPTGBBOC - waited for people to go by before opening cache. DCIOOF - disposable camera is out of film LBIF - log book is full LSI - left signature item TVNILJIIP - took very nice item, left junk in its place FBS - forgot bug spray CNFCONTCOC - could not find, cache owner needs to check on cache GPSWWDTTC - GPS was wandering due to tree cover FFTATTL (feel free to add to this list)
  5. I recently saw plasticware from KFC -- fork, knife, and napkin in celophane.
  6. Never mind. I now realize there's two "news" that can appear. That could be good news, or bad news.... and then no news is good news, or something like that. I'm going caching.
  7. quote:Originally posted by Brian - Team A.I.:Well, the 'New' graphic is much easier on the eyes, but now it's busier than ever. Not only do you have a 'New' graphic on when it was last found, but any cache I've found within the set parameters also shows a 'New' below the date. Could we get rid of that second one? This shows up when I do a search for new caches within my state (Arizona). Brian Team A.I. Yeah, I'm confused here (sorry if this has been addressed earlier). I'm seeing caches that are a year old show up as "NEW". Is this because they've been found recently? I'm used to NEW applying only to when the cache was made public.

  9. All but one in my home state of Illinois. The other was near San Diego.
  10. I'll throw constellation into the mix.
  11. Because they don't appreciate the sport. Probably the same reason they plunder caches too. Takes all kinds. It's too bad, but that's the world we live in. I'm starting a new policy in my cache hunting, and that is to remove any junk or trash I see. I know it's a judgment call, but trash is trash and placing it in a cache doesn't change that fact. CITO applies to the cache itself from now on.
  12. Maybe someone has run across a similar problem here. First, I've been able to verify the serial connection from my PC to GPS using a hyperterminal connection to COM1 -- wasn't even using EasyGPS so I know I can at least talk to the GPS. When I go to download a waypoint to the GPS using EasyGPS, it bombs out and says I've got a problem with the serial connection, GPS isn't sending data, etc. Does my GPS have to be in a data receive/send mode to download data from EasyGPS? If I'm lucky enough to have an iFinder owner read this, can you tell me if I need an MMC card in the unit in order to download waypoints? Maybe someday I can get through on the Lowrance help line, but for now this is probably quicker. Thanks. PS... when I click the download option on EasyGPS and specify it's an iFinder, the "OK" button to download on the dialog box is grayed out, i.e. not active. It's as if the program doesn't even allow downloads to that unit, although it is an option when selecting the GPS in the first place.

But at least he can spell.
  15. How can they attack you again (you say you know for a fact it's coming) if you're removing your account from gc.com? The whole thing sounds odd and overly melodramatic.
  16. I usually wear camo when I geocache cuz it's most comfortable. I always seem to exit a brushpile or wooded area right in front of someone, so they wonder what I'm doing with a backpack by myself in the woods dressed like Rambo. Two caches I've hunted have been under bridges, so that really raises suspicions. I had one guy jokingly tell me to plant the bomb on some other bridge as this one was already wired.

  18. Another micro. Pill bottle with paper scroll. Yawn. Snore. zzzz. Boring.
  19. quote:Originally posted by Brian - Team A.I.:Since you didn't actually visit the location, you can't legitimately claim it as a find. There are several virtuals/locationless caches that can be found on the internet, but it defeats the whole purpose of geocaching... Brian Team A.I. Even though I grew up in Mesa (Westwood Warriors!!) I must play devil's advocate. I think virtuals and locationless while not necessarily defeating the purpose of geocaching aren't really things that you "find". In my mind they're not even caches. Instead, somebody directs you to a spot and has you photograph it. OK, yeah, I can see the appeal, it gets you to places you might not otherwise go, but to call a building or a rock or the Golden Gate bridge a "cache" is really a stretch. (who hid it?) OK, I'm left-brained, I admit. I just find it amusing, that's all. When you consider what the original intent of the sport is, and then look at all the variations, we've strayed far from the original intent. But hey it's just a game. One annoyance of mine in particular though is that the cache nearest my house that I'll probably never get off my list is a food pantry. I guess you "find" the cache by going and giving soup cans or something. Nice idea, but to make something like that a "cache" really is way off. cp58 engineer computer programmer literalist stick in the mud
  20. I like a hint that tells me where it is or how to locate it. So I can go right to it? No, but recently I came across a micro (magnetic key case) that had been plundered and tossed aside. Only by dumb luck did I find it at the bottom of the bridge, rather than attached in its proper place. A clue that tells where it is helps the hunter determine if the cache is where it's supposed to be, and therefore save others who follow a lot of grief.
  21. Anyone thinking of buying GPS accessories from Online Marine may want to reconsider. I ordered a PC data cable for my iFinder from them over 5 weeks ago and finally had to contest the charge with VISA and get my money back. The item had been on back order long before I ordered (I was not told this) yet they charged me anyway. 3 weeks ago I was told it was to ship from the warehouse in a week. Didn't happen. Last week I was told they'd check with the supplier and get back to me via phone or email. Didn't happen. This week they, uh, well, uh, hold on, uh, let us check, uh. (Insert sound of me hanging up the phone here). I was disappointed as they had the best prices, but I guess you get what you pay for. Wait!! I didn't even get that!!! I think 5+ weeks with no clue of what's going on constitutes poor customer service, hence my post here. Your mileage with them may vary. I still need the cable, so any recommendations for reputable vendors are welcome.
  22. Used to, but get enough accuracy w/o it and saves battery power to boot.
  23. Not a whole lot. I usually stay within 10-15 miles of home, and just hope the new ones are within that area.
  24. It's a good idea, but my first thought was that my PC mapping software I use would allow me to mark the points along the highway based on the coords, then draw lines between the points and determine the distance. I'm sure with the detail the software provides, I could get the right answer. So you might want to add something more to the cache to prevent people like me from cheating!!! And remember, never never NEVER hold hands while you're driving, especially if you're by yourself!!!
