+LaNoRy Posted August 28, 2024 Posted August 28, 2024 I feel like that you should be able to make a group with multiple people in the messaging system on geocaching. I feel like that will get a lot of use because you could message multiple people about a problem, a geocache, or just for fun. Even if it was limited to like 5 people maximum, I feel like that would be nice. I really wish that this was a feature, because it would be super cool, a nd I have been thinking about it for a long time. 1 1 1 Quote

I already ignore Groundspeak's Message Center because other tools that I already use work better. If Groundspeak added some multi-user chat feature, then I would continue to use other tools that I already use, tools that work better. 1 Quote

People can choose not to use it if they want. 1 Quote
+CAVinoGal Posted August 28, 2024 Posted August 28, 2024 Just FYI, you CAN group text through messaging here in the forum, using geocaching names. I've used it a few times to group text a few geocachers at one time. I think (not sure though) the cacher needs to be registered for the forums for it to work for all, but a group text DOES work using the forum messaging platform. Click the envelope next to your name in the title bar, and check it out. Quote

A big bunch of random caching names were selected (I did not know and had not interacted with any of them), when a hacker or spammer got into the system and my inbox filled with about 500+ messages in less than an hour. Basically it shut down my ability to work (happened before I got online mostly). I had to turn off the email notification, and eventually Groundspeak did something. Then apparently got rid of the group messaging AFAIK. Some of the messages were others replying "who are you and how do I get off this list?". It was not fun (understatement). 1 1 1 Quote
+cerberus1 Posted August 28, 2024 Posted August 28, 2024 You message all people who are "watching' a cache simply by your log. There are more than a few faceboook or tweeter sites that deal with geocaching. That's where conversations belong... 1 1 Quote

I feel like then it should exist but only if you have friended someone, or if you have found another person’a cache. Like anyone ahouldn’t be able to do it to them, you should be only to make group chats with either friends or people with x amount of caches that you have found. 1 Quote

The primary purposes for the Message Center are to send a note to someone who is NOT your 'friend', or one whose cache you're trying to find. Your suggested restrictions would eliminate both of those purposes. If you want to chat with your friends, make a phone call or go to Social Media. There's a long history of keeping Groundspeak's website function-targeted and NOT like every other thing on the Internet. 1 Quote

I have a number of geocaching "friends" who I am friendly with but am not connected to on social media and I keep my mobile number pretty private. I agree with @LaNoRy that group chats among geocaching "friends" should be allowed. Edited December 2, 2024 by CCFwasG Quote
