+Cecticide
Hello Waymarkers, I recently went back into Waymarking since the waymarkly app has been released. It's a lot easier with it now, and I discovered many things. Now I wanted to post a Waymark for a postal service mailbox near me but found that no category existed for it. I saw that it exits in UK for Victorian mailboxes but nothing elsewhere.. What do you think about this category? I like the idea that they are everywhere, easily recognized and have local specificities such as design or color. I started a group but before going any further any advice is welcome Thanks 1 1 Quote Link to comment

+FamilieFrohne
The victorian post boxes are from the Victorian era which was from 1837 to 1901. There are not so many of them left - i.e. they are pretty rare compared to the modern boxes and for being accepted they must still be used by the UK Mail. I agree with Max and 99 that modern post boxes are far to many in every town (next one to my home is just 70m away) and creating a category for those would mean to create a category where the nice and unique pieces will perish. To avoid a pretty meaningless category I would also vote a "NO". But perhaps you found a post box similar to the attached image, which is located in Bremen and dates back to the time Germany had a Kaiser. The box is still used by the "Deutsche Post AG". Perhaps you wanted to create a similar category like the victorian boxes outside of the UK - but if that was planned, it wasn't apparent from the post. 2 Quote Link to comment
+fi67
Just mailboxes? No way. Historic ones, let's say pre-1900? That could be interesting. Of course, I would prefer to have the existing category expanded to a global scope, but I have the impression that the officers of UK specific categories are not very responsive in that respect. 2 Quote Link to comment
+bluesnote
In the US, there's at least 10 in every shopping/business center. However, like others have said, if you focus on the aesthetics and historical value of them, then sure! That might make a category. But you will need to define what is worthy and what is not going to make the cut. 1 Quote Link to comment

I've chosen The Fi Guy's post to quote here as it (essentially) totally agrees with my take on the proposal, but with a tip-of-the-hat to Eric's (FamilieFrohne) post. If it's historic, I'm IN. Otherwise, I'm utterly & completely uninterested. I just see no need to elaborate on what The Fi Guy wrote. Guess I could have just written What He Said... ...That said, WELCOME (back) to Waymarking, Cecticide. Hope you make it a point to stay awhile! It's one of the old Locationless Caches, and was one of the first Waymarking categories. Hence I cant see the category expanding to accept other Post Boxes. They will accept Victorian post boxes no longer in use, either here in the UK, or non-UK boxes. (I have at least two listed that are no longer in use!) https://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/wm153VQ_Knockholt_Railway_Station_Knockholt_Sevenoakes_UK https://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/wmZR49_Brookwood_Railway_Station_Post_Box_Brookwood_Surrey On 12/10/2021 at 3:27 PM, FamilieFrohne said: they are pretty rare compared to the modern boxes and for being accepted they must still be used by the UK Mail. +Bear and Ragged
On the other hand... In the UK we have old Edwardian and Georgian Post Boxes (could be/are rarer than the Victorian ones!) that could be able to be added to a new category. There was a request about them some time ago, but only as a UK Waymark. Quote Link to comment
+Cecticide
Thanks you everyone for your inputs. I now understand that it might be too much/common in the US when I read : On 12/10/2021 at 11:12 PM, bluesnote said: in the US, there's at least 10 in every shopping/business center. I guess I was France/belgium/Luxembourg focused, where each time I need to post something, it's a pain to find a mailbox. But the idea of FamilieFrohne backed by fi67 is nice, maybe only focus on the vintage/old mailboxes that are still in use. I know there are also some in France & Belgium : here for exemple. I need to search if this old mailbox category can be world wide, "EU centric" or focused on a specific country. I still don't know all rules but there I'm sure you can help. How one is in or not in the category, what could be the criteria to in/exclude. Should it be linked to the UK victorian boxes ? maybe not when I read Bear and Ragged comments. Thanks for your words ScroogieII I still have lots of Waymark to create in my areas, lots of WWII monuments to yet in the game. It's a good companion to geocaching activity as I realize many places I've been caching have Waymarks for which I took pictures 1 Quote Link to comment
