+hoges in wa
Hi I thought I'd posted this a week ago but it seems to have disappeared somewhere. When I connect my Garmin 76CsX to my laptop, the laptop doesn't see it. I get a "beep" when I connect but it doesn't show up in the list of drives or connected. It is not the cable, as using the same cable I can connect my Majellan Explorist 310. I also can't get any caches to go to either of the devices on the "Send to GPS" command. I get told that Chrome no longer supports the move, I try my Firefox browser and that says the same, not supported, and forum advice is to not use IE. Any tips on what is going wrong? Is Windows 10 the issue with the 76CsX? The Majellan seems OK with connecting but not with transferring caches. I'm heartily sick of the refresh rate on my Android phone and want to go back to my GPS. Hoges Edited September 9, 2016 by hoges in wa Quote Link to comment
+Viajero Perdido
Have you put the Garmin into Mass Storage Mode? From memory, Setup -> Interface -> Mass Storage Mode. It should then appear on the computer as an external drive. But if you're using Garmin software to load waypoints, POIs or maps, don't put it into that mode first. "Refresh rate" on the phone? Do you mean, updates on the house-brand caching app? Have a look at Locus Map (free or pro), which is updated at a furious pace. It's my caching app of choice, full of functionality. +hoges in wa
Thanks for that. Sees it immediately. I have a new map of Almeria to instal (i know how to do that, onto my SD card but can i now download caches via the "send to GPS" instruction? Why won't the laptop "see" the 76 the way it always used to? Hoges Quote Link to comment
+Red90
The "send to gps" is a problem with the Garmin Communicator plugin that is no longer supported. There are a thousand threads on the issue. You are better using pocket queries or saving as a GPX, then using a program to load them to the GPS, like Basecamp. Quote Link to comment
+hoges in wa
Ok, can you describe the process of either generating a PQ and somehow transferring the results to my 76 so I can read them, or the second thing you mentioned, the GPX. How do i put one of them onto the 76 so that when I turn it on and hit "Geocache" it is there. I don't get what folders these things need to be in. Assistance appreciated. Hoges Quote Link to comment
+Red90
Pocket Queries: https://www.geocaching.com/pocket/default.aspx Links to tutorials are there. The button next to "Send to GPS" says "GPX file". Click on that. Both options create a GPX file. You need to open that with a program and then send it to the GPS. There are lots of possible programs. Garmin's Basecamp is one and is free. With any of the newer devices, you can put the GPX file directly on the GPS, but yours is a bit too old. Groundspeak also has a page showing links to a bunch of programs: https://www.geocaching.com/software/default.aspx Quote Link to comment

Hoges You may transfer caches and waypoints with an appropriate application like MapSource, Base Camp, GPS Babel or GSAK. The 76CSx definitely will not mount as a drive. The button "Send to My Gps" from the cache page will work as well. Hans Edited September 9, 2016 by HHL Quote Link to comment
+hoges in wa
My laptop will no longer "Find" my Garmin 76, which started this whole process off. Additionally, I live on my yacht, with limited internet accessand am using my phone to conduct this exchange because i don't get reliable internet on the laptop. I'm frustrated but hopeful 😊 Quote Link to comment
+Viajero Perdido
Doesn't the 76CSx run the same firmware as the 60CSx? As I recall, they're twins with different skin. My experience with the 60CSx is, definitely a Mass Storage Mode, and in that mode, it mounts as a drive on a PC. That's useful for maps and caches as custom POIs, but I agree, that won't help for waypoints or caches masquerading as waypoints (eg using Garmin's built-in cache functionality). Set: Setup > Interface > USB Mass Storage But this only affects the microSD card. Not the unit itself. I edited my post. Hans Edited September 9, 2016 by HHL Quote Link to comment
+hoges in wa
I'm now mightily confused by all this and considered just junking the 76 due to its age but I see that they still go for over $200 on eBay so they can't be all bad. Because I know the cable works (my Majellan connects with it), can anyone suggest why the laptop won't see the Garmin? Hoges Quote Link to comment

As said before. You may transfer caches and waypoints with an appropriate application like MapSource, Base Camp, GPS Babel or GSAK. In this case the 76CSx uses the Garmin Serial protocol and the Windows Explorer is not usable here. See also Red90's post. Hans Edited September 13, 2016 by HHL Quote Link to comment
+hoges in wa
Hans - that's the bit that's confusing me. I've had this since I began caching in 2009 and I've never had to use these programs before? It's always just "worked", although I had to re-install the Garmin device finder every time. In the past, you have been using the program called "Garmin Communicator". Most browsers have removed the ability for that program to work due to security issues. There are some ways around this. If you want to figure out how, so a search ON THESE FORUMS for Garmin Communicator and you will find dozens of threads discussing the details. Otherwise, use one of the other suggestions. robertlipe
The electronics and firmware of the 60Cx/60CSx/76Cx/76CSx are pretty much the same. There is a mass storage mode that was added late in the firmware life's cycle. If you have really old firmware, it won't show up in mass storage mode ever. Unlike a Nuvi, Oregon, Colorado, etc. the mass storage mode is definitely an afterthought; the unit doesn't automatically enumerate on the USB bus as a storage device, so it won't just automatically show up like a thumb drive. Mass storage mode is useful for transferring tracks (see http://www.gpsfaqs.org/faqs/garmin/xseries/g60csx/tracks.html#gpx) from the device, but it's a bit of an odd duck. You can transfer maps if you're a masochist; it's way faster to remove the card use a card reader/writer and eliminate that model's terrible USB speed. Waypoint transfer via mass storage mode was never a thing in that generation. A program that speaks Garmin protocol is necessary to transfer waypoints. (I happened to write one of the ones cited above...) Quote Link to comment
+hoges in wa
Thanks for that. I managed to put a .gpx onto my desktop, then bring it into 'My Collection' in Basecamp, then transfer that to the 76, which Basecamp recognises. PHEW! Took me a while to understand then execute all of that. Now my issue is that I can't get my Open map to show me all of Spain - the bit where I currently am moored is not showing, but that's another forum. Thanks for all the help here, and particularly the patience. Quote Link to comment
+hoges in wa
I can't see the post that suggested it but I went and found the Base Map and disabled it. Then the map I downloaded worked. Now I have generated a Pocket Query for Madrid, 100 caches max. When it arrives, I get an email that says it is here and I can View it or I can D/l it. Can anyone explain how I get it from the desktop (where I extract it to) and onto my 76CsX? thanks Hoges Quote Link to comment

I managed to put a .gpx onto my desktop, then bring it into 'My Collection' in Basecamp, then transfer that to the 7") Hans Quote Link to comment
Nmw
Hoges, are you now displaying the Spain map with the coastlines ok Nev Quote Link to comment
+hoges in wa
Yes I am. I think I must have got the tip fron the OSM forum. When I disabled them underlying world map Spain displayed correctly. I did try, as recommended, an OSM from another source but it didn't work. The disabling if the base map was rhw second suggestion and it did work. Quote Link to comment
+hoges in wa
UPDATE on connection problem with 76CsX D/l Basecamp and learned how to import things to it. Then learned how to export to my device, which it sees. I had my Garmin listed on Gumtree for sale because it wouldn't show me info. or cache detail but then I reconsidered - I already have the Garmin, I already have the 2 phones, the 3 tablets etc so it's just a matter of getting each to do what it does best. The phones can give me field info. without printing it and the Garmin gives me very fast and very accurate positions. So far, working well and Garmin no longer for sale. Thanks for all the advice. 6 cache day today. Quote Link to comment
sviking
It's a very old unit. It's time to update and get something much newer. Quote Link to comment
