  1. If the button mechanism is ok, I would put cyclinder made of eraser in the hole with a bit of Silastic joining the mechanism and sealing the edge of rubber to the outside edge of black rubber. I would cut a section of mountain bike tyre tubing to form a short tube and stretch that over the existing rubber and maybe add some silastic to the edges if it sticks ok? Or try rubber cement/glue from the bike tube repair kit. All the buttons should still operate with the thin layer of rubber tubing installed. That stretchy silicon tape should also work very well and I expect would be a better solution that the bike tube.
  2. Your are probably better advised to post the query at http://forums.gpsreview.net as I have seen questions like this posted there previously. There was a recent similar discussion on this site... http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=343307&pid=5644944&st=0entry5644944
  3. Do you have coordinates (lat long) of each of the corners? If so you could add those as waypoints to your gpsr and then do some waypoint averaging at each point to refine the right spot and then peg it out yourself as a best estimate by you gpsr..
  4. I am confused - what does this have to do with your Garmin eTrex 10?
  5. Hoges, are you now displaying the Spain map with the coastlines ok Nev
  6. Garmin should provide a service for all who accidentally format the drive irespective of whether it is under warranty or you are the nth owner of the unit. I hear "I accidentally formatted my GPS" often enough to warrant doing so. There should be no cost and just be a download.
  7. I would try putting a layer of silicon over the hole. If the small switch mentioned earlier is intact, the silican would need to almost touch it. I would put a small slice from a pencil eraser on the switch and then apply the silicon to it. Then if it doesn't quite work you can pull it out and have another try. A few small layers built up using cycle tyre patches and the rubber glue would be worth a try too, with the top layer overlapping the area around the hole to make it water tight. I have seen other users protect there etrex while mountain biking by stretching a slice of bike tubing around the rubber part to give extra prtection in case of crash. Screen is still vulnerable though.
  8. You should check out the osm extracts at http://extract.bbbike.org as you can define your own size by resizing a rectanlgle or polgon over the area to keep the extract within you limitations. I am unsure if the type of map suits you but there seems to be a variety of choice for a Garmin type extract. http://extract.bbbike.org/extract-screenshots.html
  9. The basemap on a garmin refers to the world map overview with only a few main highways and no detail and is provided free with the device. The more detailed maps that are used for navigation can be purchased from garmin but are often added to be included in the total purchase price and sometimes with lifetime updates. There are also free versions with high detail and many are routable for the garmin and the openstreetmap ones are listed here (see the pre-made map download link) http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin ...and you can also get free versions of the basemap too, though that is probably a free download from garmin i would hink if you accidentally deleted it.
  10. I have wondered if always carrying your gps attached to one side of your body makes a difference. On the return trip all your satellite fixes are from the other hemisphere. Sometimes i have found that having the gps gets a bit off track when i wear it attached to my belt at the right side compared to carrying in my hand or attaching high on my backpack.
  11. By the way, I saw this mentioned on another site... This is very good value to me. "Just got the anniversary sale catalog from REI. They are offering the Garmin Oregon 600 for $220, available from May 15 through May 25 only. That seems like a really good price, not sure if I've seen it for less."
  12. I too feel that garmin should post these out free of charge. Cost is fair enough if you want garmin to do the work putting a new one on though. If you do need to resurect the old one this may help in attaching it. http://photo-bytes.com/technical-stuff/132-how-to-un-goo-a-garmin-etrex
  13. Yes, there are many older units still performing perfectly for the task required and we shouldn't waste resources updating technology unecessarily.
  14. This site is great for downloading a map of a smaller area for your device via a bounding box http://extract.bbbike.org
  15. Also a way to put any map image on garmin gps Custom maps https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId=%7B2183bd60-bf34-11de-c454-000000000000%7D
  16. http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/draw/'>http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/draw/ This site is basic drawing a track i guess but the visualizer is excellent for displaying tracks. http://www.gpsvisualizer.com
  17. Is it amongst these http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Track_drawing_websites
  18. I have plugged in the etrex30, gone to this site to view some geocaches in my area of interest, selected one, ticked the accept smallprint button, send to gps, then do 'select another one, tick the accept smallprint button again, send to gps' for several more, and diconnect gps, switch on again, go to the geocache page on the etrex and it says none found and to sign up again with a garmin geocache group group. I have read online that most popular site is here and that the garmin site has few geocaches. So can I do it the way I expected above or not. No warning messages...no advisories...no geocaches from www.geocaching.com site??? Do you require my money first?
