  1. Thanks for that. I've set up 3. What triggered it was an event in my town that I did not know about so now I can get advised when one occurs. Thank you.
  2. Hi, Is there a way to get an alert for new caches in my area? Tried to search this but it just went on and on and on and on.
  3. I do know that if I select ONE cache on the sidebar and expand it to full screen, then Add to List from the right hand side of the page, I get asked if I want to add it to an existing list or a new list. The system knows that the list I created exists, on the expanded page, but has zero clue if the caches are in the sidebar format. It seems ridiculous to have a "Select All" button and "Add to List" when the only way it works is one at a time. Not doing that for 130 caches.
  4. I have created a new list under "Lists". I have given it a name. It has NO caches in it. The bottom of the page says to go to the Map. I go to my map. I select the area I want to go caching in and hit "Search Here". 129 caches come up. I select them all. Down the bottom, I try to add to a list. I want them to go to the new list I just created, on the page which directed me to the map. All I get at the bottom of the page is Create New List. I don't want a new list. I want them to go to the newly-created list that sent me to this page in the first place. Even if I accede to this instruction to Create New List, it refuses to complete the task, simply endlessly circling. What am I missing here? It seems simple enough and the instructions are clear as can be.
  5. Solved with the help of a WA Geocacher. Earth couldn't tell which one of three options I wanted to save to it in its wisdom saved all three variations and gave them its own names based on the roads I was intending to take. So I kept "saving" one that had nothing in it instead of any-on-or-all-three of the ones with miles in them. I have now worked this out and have uploaded successfully.
  6. I've created a route in Google Earth. I can see it just fine. It gives me a couple of alternative options to get to where I want to go. I save the route in My Places and give it a name. I save the file to my desktop because it's easy to grab it from there. I go back into Geocaching to Upload. I choose the file and upload. The file has a name but no name comes into my list. The latest file there shows 0 miles. Previewing this file shows rubbish - many lines up and down the US East Coast then a line across the Atlantic all the way to southern Turkey. Seems to be an amalgamation of every previous route I have, but not a hint of the most recent one which is the South West of Western Australia. Why does the uploaded file not show me a name? Why does it have 0 miles in it? If I open it in Google Earth it's fine. Not fine in Geocaching? Getting frustrated after many attempts.
  7. Now that I have the recommended SD card, and been guided on the need to avoid Basecamp, can anyone tell me how I force my Montana to read the SD card when I place GPX files on it? The manual tells me how to insert the card but not how to access it. I can see it when I am connected to my PC but if I place a GPX file on it the unit doesn't see it until I place it on the unit's own drive. Hoges
  8. Thank you Mineral2. I use Basecamp because some year ago when Communicator refused to work, I was told I should be using Basecamp. All I do is import PQs into "My Collection", then export "My Collection" to my device. Or else just the PQ itself. All the caches on Basecamp are new and have nothing to do with Basic Membership vs Premium. Have been a Premium member since 2009 and didn't live in this place then. The device and Basecamp only date from about October last year when I returned from my boat and resumed a life on land. Will take your advice and load directly to my (Garmin-recommended!!) SD card. It would seem from all the above that the distance/co-ords are just a quirk and have no impact. That being the case, I will ignore them. Thanks for all the input.
  9. Quick question - How do I direct the caches to the SD card instead of internal storage?
  10. Photo of log from a cache called McMillan Wander (says it's missing but CO replaced it today) ALL logs that show on the Montana are like this.
  11. No, reading them directly from the log shown on the Montana 680T. Not from Basecamp. Looking at the Geocache log entry on the GPS. Now this near-pile-of-junk has thwarted a full caching day by losing ALL caches in its memory after I stopped for lunch at Commodore VQ. Was going fine up til then. Turned off for lunch. Had lunch sitting behind the car. Turned on when I wanted to go to the next cache in the series and the Montana said No Geocaches Found. Nil, not a one. Not even the ones I'd found earlier today. I had Garmin Chartplotter 4210, Garmin Radar and Garmin AIS on my yacht that I lived on for 6 years but I'm seeing a marked difference between stuff that costs 12,000 Euros and consumer items that cost $850. Not impressed with this unit at all.
  12. Another curiosity has become evident for which I could find no explanation in the Montana pages GPSrChive: The Logs for all the caches on the unit show as being 12,300 +/-km from where I am. The co-ords in the description at the top are correct and the distances are correct, navigation to the cache is fine. HOWEVER, when the log is written, the co-ords show as N 00⁰00.000 E 00⁰00.000 and the distance 12374km in the case of (say)GC5X522. All logs by other cachers show the same incorrect co-ords and distance as mine. My Home Location is updated, and is about 25km from this particular cache. It is the logs which are weird. Does anyone have an explanation?
  13. Thanks for all the tips. Went out yesterday and the unit decided to lose its displayed map once (with no SD card in it). Turned off and then on all was back to normal. Maybe it was just overloaded from the work? I went to the recommended GPSrChive for Montana above and had a good read of items of interest. Bookmarked it now. I still don't know why I get the There was a problem communicating with Montana......blah blah blah. Then An error occurred while reading Garmin/GPX/Garmin Waypoints.gpx error when I connect to Basecamp. Once I hit anything else, the error goes away and all is normal.
  14. UPDATE. Now I have a different issue. Doesn't appear to be a huge problem but just curious. When I connect my unit and open Basecamp, I get " There was a problem communicating with Montana......blah blah blah. Then An error occurred while reading Garmin/GPX/Garmin Waypoints.gpx Any ideas what this means and should I give a rats'? Is it just having a tantrum? Second, Garmin have told me they recommend Sandisk MicroSD. Ok, so I bought one. Now I notice there's already 7Gig of space on the internal memory. Is there a need for an external card and if yes what do I direct to the card.?
  15. Thank you. Found the GGZ file and moved it (in case I was wrong and needed it later). Now my unit is clear and I will reload from some PQ results. Thank you.
  16. Hi. I have a Garmin Montana 680. It has about 60 or so caches on it that I can't find to delete. I have removed the SD card. I have cleared all from Basecamp My Selection. When I connect the unit to the PC via Basecamp, I can see the unit. If I click on it NO caches show up. When I disconnect and operate the unit stand-alone, there are these 60 or so caches on it. Where are they being stored? I want to remove them completely. Anyone know?? I'm confused. Thanks Hoges
  17. Hi, Is it possible to find out what caches have been archived in and around my area? I've seen the MapCompare post and tried it. It shows all caches including archived, but I can't see only archived i.e. I can't strip out active caches. Is there any way to find ONLY archived caches in my area? thanks Hoges
  18. Hi. New unit I am just beginning with. When I select a cache to go for, I can get the Description and I can get logs but nothing else, like no hints or photos. Is this correct or am I not finding or displaying something correctly? thanks Terry
  19. I understand what you are saying but don't know where this setting would be. Internet Options? Advice appreciated. I have set .gpx files to open with a free app I found but they still show with a .pdf icon next to them. Hoges
  20. New Desktop PC running Windows 10. New Garmin Montana 680T, though I can't see that playing a part in this. When I extract the results of a pocket query, OR if I hit the GPX file option on an individual search, I send the output/result to a folder in my Diving/Hiking/GPS folder then into a sub-folder called BaseCamp caches. ALL are saving as .pdf file types. Can anyone tell me why? It did NOT happen on my laptop, which is open alongside this new desktop and shows an older pocket query version of the one I ran today as 6689134-wpts.gpx and 6689134.gpx. I'm perplexed. thank Hoges
  21. Hi, In a moment of reflection, I thought it might be useful to go over my history and find all the caches where I recorded a Did Not Find. Went to my Stats and I can see all the finds but I don't know if I can list all my DNFs, which I would like to put in a separate list to revisit and log. Can anyone tell me how to do this? Thanks Hoges
  22. UPDATE on connection problem with 76CsX D/l Basecamp and learned how to import things to it. Then learned how to export to my device, which it sees. I had my Garmin listed on Gumtree for sale because it wouldn't show me info. or cache detail but then I reconsidered - I already have the Garmin, I already have the 2 phones, the 3 tablets etc so it's just a matter of getting each to do what it does best. The phones can give me field info. without printing it and the Garmin gives me very fast and very accurate positions. So far, working well and Garmin no longer for sale. Thanks for all the advice. 6 cache day today.
  23. Yes I am. I think I must have got the tip fron the OSM forum. When I disabled them underlying world map Spain displayed correctly. I did try, as recommended, an OSM from another source but it didn't work. The disabling if the base map was rhw second suggestion and it did work.
