Simply Paul Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 As you may know, in the past I've run nine "Britain's most remote" events. Those being 2015's on Mull, 2014 on Jersey, 2013 on Skye (a non-event!), 2012 on Bryher IoS, 2011 on Eigg, Small Isles, 2010 south of Jersey, 2009 on Unst, Shetlands, 2008 on St Agnes, IoS and 2007 on St Kilda in the outer, outer Hebrides. In 2014 I also held Mainland Europe's most Northerly meet in Norway. For the tenth incarnation of this event series, I want to push the boat out - perhaps literally. I'm considering returning to the Isles of Scilly (visited 2008/12) but perhaps the tenth deserves something a bit more... ambitious? So, would anyone be interested in i) Suggesting somewhere suitable (not Scotland though) ii) Going to Gavdos, south of Crete - recognised as Europe's most southerly point - for a cache event? I'm looking at early July so I'm home in time for the Geolympix at the end of the month. Also, an early heads-up: For 2017 I'm considering returning to St Kilda for an anniversary visit, while also seeing Barra, the Uists etc. There's two caches out there now, including one I've not found/set Quote
Delta68 Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 We went to Portugal last year and I never realised just how far West we were! I just had a look, and our most westerly find was only about a 3.5 mile drive from the most westerly point on mainland Europe! Quote
Simply Paul Posted August 6, 2015 Author Posted August 6, 2015 Portugal eh? Interesting. I've only been to Madeira (BC) so it is a gap on my map. Thanks for the suggestion Quote
Happy Humphrey Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 How about the Azores? Remote and off the main tourist trail, but a mild climate and accessible by direct flights from the UK. Loads of geocaches too. Azores Getting to the Azores Westernmost point of Europe Westernmost cache in Europe Quote
L8HNB Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 (edited) We could probably fit something in again... :) Edited August 7, 2015 by L8HNB Quote
Simply Paul Posted August 10, 2015 Author Posted August 10, 2015 Another awesome suggestion - thank you HH! When I get my plans together, I'll post links here. Open to more Remote/Extreme suggestions in the meantime Quote
GilkerscleughCachers Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 May I suggest http://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC1Y739_station-nord-gronland which is in Greenland and is at 81 degrees N? Quote
GilkerscleughCachers Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Or the relatively new http://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC60BX6_williams-island which is the most northerly Geocache on the planet (by 12m)? Quote
Simply Paul Posted August 14, 2015 Author Posted August 14, 2015 If budgets would allow! I thought 71deg 11.111' was pretty good last year, but I see this is just chicken-feed really! I'm also thinking of something warmer having just experienced July in Scotland (my feet are now webbed) but the links are appreciated; thank you! Quote
pig, dog, boyandgirl Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 What happened to the APE trip? I've been patiently waiting..... Quote
Simply Paul Posted August 20, 2015 Author Posted August 20, 2015 There wasn't a swell of enthusiasm for the APE trip, and the with sad death of its owner, some question over the cache's future. I'd be very reticent to organise (with probable financial exposure) a large-scale trip to it without Groundspeak confirming it's safe, and fine, and the icon will live on - rather than being killed-off, as they have with every other Grandfathered cache type (you can't adopt Virtuals or Webcams, for example). I'm glad you're keeping an eye on it though, and never say never... Quote
heartradio Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 For the tenth incarnation of this event series, I want to push the boat out - perhaps literally. I'm considering returning to the Isles of Scilly (visited 2008/12) but perhaps the tenth deserves something a bit more... ambitious? How about going to the Isles of Scilly but going to Samson, an island uninhabited since the 1850s. If the weather is fit (it should be at that time of year), the boatmen on St Marys will run a boat out at 10.15 and you have to land by dinghy from the big boat as there is no quay. There is a lovely beach, and several ruined houses and things. See pictures for more detail! The Beach at Samson Landing by dinghy Ruined houses on Samson heartradio Quote
Simply Paul Posted August 29, 2015 Author Posted August 29, 2015 Thanks heartradio. Having tried to get there in 2008 and 2012, I'm not sure it's right for an event - boats are just too irregular - but thank you for the suggestion. I've already held the UK's most southerly meet (St Agnes) and England's most westerly (Bryher) on the Scillies, so I'll need to work on a really good idea if I go back next year. At least there are more new caches for me to go for, having cleared the islands in 2012 (and 2008, I think) Quote
Simply Paul Posted January 4, 2016 Author Posted January 4, 2016 (edited) Partly inspired by heartradio's suggestion, I've decided on another of the Isles of Scilly's uninhabited islands for this year's Remote event - White Island, the most northerly accessible island of Scilly. It's tidal and attached to St Martin's at low tide. Please put Sunday July 17th 2016 in your West Country caching diary. 11.30am-12pm, to match low tide (10.05am BST, but it's hard to get onto the island that early unless you're staying there). 10.15 boat from St Mary's. Any questions? Fire away! I'll post a link to the event here as soon as I'm able. I hope it'll be a 6-month listing candidate as accommodation on Scilly gets booked up early. +Simply Paul Posted January 13, 2016 Author Posted January 13, 2016 Have a great trip vw_k - The islands look stunning in spring, with so many wild flowers. In addition to St Martins IoS, I'm planning a meet on Lundy on Tuesday the 19th of July. A link will follow when possible. Quote

Malpas Wanderer Posted March 13, 2016 Posted March 13, 2016 Paul, Is it just in St Mary's that we need to book accommodation. Think that is the way I've read the page and ferry to St Martins is as such a day trip. Is there a link to pre book the St Martins Ferry? Quote

St Martins Ferry will be a day trip from St Marys. Boats usually go 10:15 ish and return around 4:30 from the Quay. No need to book, just turn up if going with the Boatmens Association. See their website for more details. heartradio Quote

L8HNB Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 As much as we'd have loved to come back to Scilly I know we can't do the dates. Lindy is a different matter though, will sort accomo and all being well log a WA soon. Cheers L&H. Quote
Simply Paul Posted June 15, 2016 Author Posted June 15, 2016 Bump for this as the events are next month and I welcome last-minute joinees. Is that a word? I'm hoping for good weather but whatever the summer brings us, the welcome will be warm at my meets Quote
Simply Paul Posted April 18, 2017 Author Posted April 18, 2017 Great fun last year - so much so I'm back to Lundy on August 8th: Reclaiming Lundy for the People of Freedonia! - Ideal for a visit after the Devon Mega. For details of my other summer caching plans, look for 'SP Takes it to Extremes Again - June 2017' Also thanks to Happy Humphrey for this suggestion of the Azores. I got to Sao Miguel - the big island - last month for £86 there-and-back-via-a-stop-in-Lisbon and had a lovely time. I'll be back for the most westerly cache in a year or two Quote
hal-an-tow Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 For 'remote from signs of human influence' spots you might find the astrononomy based 'dark skies' initiatives an interesting angle, especially for events when some easily observable event in the night sky is scheduled* : try here for places, and here for information. For planning ahead this might be handy. *e.g. meteor showers are reasonably reliable, mind you, clouds in the way are unfortunately unreasonably reliable too ... Quote
