+MissJenn Posted May 5, 2003 Posted May 5, 2003 As we get closer to June 8, the date of the South Central PA Cachers Picnic, check back on the cache page. Our Organizing Team (such as they are) has acquired some door prizes, and we’ve tightened up the schedule a little bit. If you plan on bringing food or beverages, please let me know so that I can continue the list we started on that page. Let’s not all bring the same thing! There will be a NAMETAG CONTEST and one prize-winner will be chosen! To add a bit of challenge, we are not revealing the criteria on which you will be judged. (It could be “Nametag That Most Resembles a Kumquat” – we’re not telling!) Here are the rules: The nametag must be worn during the picnic. The nametag must contain your geocaching username. The nametag must not be in Braille (err, that is for another time and another place). Is anyone planning on going to the Water Safety Festival? If you do, perhaps you might want to coordinate a time for others to join you? I myself will be staying at the pavilion. If you would like to set up a new cache at Blue Marsh, that would be awesome! Just get the Special Use Permit first (available from them or from me). This process does take a couple of weeks, so to get your cache ready by June 8 … you do the math. If any of you are coming from a far distance and want to make a weekend out of this, note that the World War II weekend (a Living History Airfield) is scheduled nearby for June 6-8. (from their brochure: “What began as the recreation of a WW II airfield has grown to encampments representing the European and Pacific Theatres of War, an extensive homefront display, more than 70 period aircraft, 200 vehicles and over a thousand living history re-enactors and entertainers.”) For more details call 610-372-7333 or check out http://www.maam.org/maamwwii.html . Having said all this, I must add that we don’t want to make this thing TOO organized. A little chaos would be fun! -- I recognize fun when I see it. Quote
+ChucKremer Posted May 7, 2003 Posted May 7, 2003 Hi, I'm planning to be there. I'll also be going to the MAAM weekendon Saturday or Friday. ChucKremer Quote
+MissJenn Posted May 7, 2003 Author Posted May 7, 2003 Hey Chuck, We went to the MAAM event last year and had a really good time (and a really good sunburn). I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself. And, thank goodness you posted a reply to this thread. I was feeling decidedly unloved - what with 90+ views and no responses ... Quote
+TaranWanderer Posted May 14, 2003 Posted May 14, 2003 If you have a boat ready for the season, I would sure love to catch a ride on it before this picnic. I need a little help with cache re-placement ... Quote
team bubbletree Posted May 14, 2003 Posted May 14, 2003 We plan on attending. Maybe we will be on time for this one. Unlike the red rocks weekend. Quote
+MissJenn Posted May 14, 2003 Author Posted May 14, 2003 team bubbletree. don't feel bad about red rock and rolls - I believe some people arrived AFTER you! -- I recognize fun when I see it. Quote
+MissJenn Posted May 15, 2003 Author Posted May 15, 2003 if you want to camp: There are no campgrounds at Blue Marsh Lake, but several are within a 10-mile drive of the project. Unfortunately, I cannot speak to how good any of these campgrounds are, as I live near here so I have never camped at any of these places. Links to the websites for the following campgrounds are available. Appalachian Campsites Box 27, Shartlesville, PA 19554, (610) 488-6319 or (800) 424-5746. +MissJenn Posted May 26, 2003 Author Posted May 26, 2003 I'm kinda hopin' that people don't show up for this event, so I can keep all the awesome prizes that all these awesome people have donated ... Quote
enfanta Posted May 27, 2003 Posted May 27, 2003 You'll have to share at least one of those prizes with me, MissJenn: I'll be there. May even be camping, not sure yet... What appears to be coming at you is coming from you. Quote

+MissJenn Posted May 29, 2003 Author Posted May 29, 2003 Mental note: Hit up Dodge and Chrysler for some prizes for the 2004 picnic. As for you, Mopar, I will absolutely not part with any of the Mopar stuff I have accumulated over the years. It has cost me way too much to get all that free merchandise. We could maybe possibly give you a free ride on the Jeep! No driving across the lake to the island cache, though. It's not lifted THAT high. -- I recognize fun when I see it. Quote
+Last Lap Gang Posted May 30, 2003 Posted May 30, 2003 Since we will be in Southeastern Pennsylvania we just may swing by on the way home to Southern Maryland. Wags, Russ & Erin Quote

+JoeCthulhu Posted June 6, 2003 Posted June 6, 2003 I was thinking about coming, but the trip would be about 7 hours round trip, and there doesn't appear to be but a couple of caches prepared. +MissJenn Posted June 6, 2003 Author Posted June 6, 2003 The latest weather forecast for Sunday says: Partly Cloudy, High:78 Low:60. No rain! All sorts of old aircraft are buzzing overhead, arriving for the WWII weekend. The highway nearby also has lots of military convoys driving in. I'm sure they're all happy for the better weather forecast, too. JoeCthulhu, If you are coming just to get new caches, you may be disappointed. There might be only 3 new ones altogether. If you are coming to see a bunch of good-looking and high-spirited cachers, socialize, win a prize, and generally hang out - you'll surely not be disappointed. We will have a lot of that going on. -- I recognize fun when I see it. Quote
+MissJenn Posted June 8, 2003 Author Posted June 8, 2003 What a cold June day – but who cares: it was a DRY day! It was cool to listen to the various people working with organizations around PA and hearing how we are making positive strides and getting friendly guidelines written out. It was even better to hear from the representatives of the organizations themselves! We are very glad you came out. THANK YOU SO MUCH: The food was abundant and delicious. The door prizes were staggering. (I came home with an unactivated TB tag – thanks to the one who donated that!) The donations were generous: we have some money left over for next year’s event – or a facial and massage for me, so I’ll let you know what I decide. I will save the GPS cake, chips, dips, pasta salad, buns, and snacks that were left over for next year – along with some paper and plastic goods. If anyone here is a geographer, please contact smoran@alum.mit.edu . I definitely did not do the nametags justice. I was feeling a little bit frazzled, and so I rushed through that portion and I apologize. Did you see all the creative juices that flowed for this little side activity? I am so proud of you folks who went to the trouble of bringing nametags! My original criteria for the winner was “Most Edible Nametag” since food is my favorite thing to eat, but no one had one of those. Instead, I went with “Most Powerful Nametag” which went to Gosffo: she had the only battery-operated nametag, and gave us the most sunshine we had all day. I wish I would have had several categories and several more prizes prepared for the rest of the cool tags present. Did you see some of them? 1. ArtVandelay – 4 different Vandelay Industries staffers were present 2. Pulaski – with quite a puzzling nametag 3. TheLeprechauns – written in the code of encrypted hints 4. Tomebug – integrated into her shirt 5. JinxMagic - with that arched-back black cat 6. Mopar – his was reversible, the side shown depended on the viewer 7. Enfanta – hand embroidered on the caching vest 8. I was also impressed with the people who saved theirs from last year’s event. Good for you, you packrats! 9. Many other cool ones, just that my brain is having trouble thinking straight at such a late hour, though. I think my favorite part was when all 103 of us put on those swim fins from Geo Chaser and simultaneously attacked the S.S. Minnow! I don’t think the Blue Marsh Rangers had ever seen such a sight and were really blown away by our activities – especially when we all did that synchronized water ballet. Someone send me a picture, please. How many people came out? Well, 103 people signed the log book and I know for a fact that at least 4 others did not sign in – and who knows how many others may have slipped through – so, as always, you do the math. -- I recognize fun when I see it. +Mopar Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 No, thank YOU, NissJenn! Thanks especially for saturday nite slumber party, it was a blast, even if it was way more party then slumber! The foosball match was especially fun. I will never forget the look of terror in Enfanta's eyes when she learned the "house rules" for the game. (or the great goal defense they inspired!) enfanta Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 Yes, THANK YOU JENN!! And Pulaski and whoever else I'm forgetting for putting together a great event. Thanks for being such a welcoming and forgiving hostess. I hope it can be replaced and I promise not to "bump" the foosball table again if I should ever be allowed back in your lovely house... And my defense would have been even sharper if my hands hadn't been shaking so much. Nothing like sheer terror to throw off your game... ANYWAY! Thanks for a great event! Quote
+Last Lap Gang Posted June 10, 2003 Posted June 10, 2003 Thanks Miss Jenn, TaranWanderer, Pulaski and the whole gang up there. Ya put on a good friendly event with just the perfect balance of M&G, food, prizes, and oh yes caching. The whole deal was sweet! Looking forward to next year already. Wags, Russ & Erin Quote
