  1. Six feet is correct. [/quote Yes I use a 5ft x 6 ft square at 40 degrees N where I spend most of my time. Chucks square will be just a bit closer to square... maybe 5.4 x 6?? There's a web site somewhere with a chart and a thread here in these forums as well.. Hi Ed, good to hear from you. Guess I should have written you a personal letter since you geocache the hard way (with map and compass)! It was good to see you at the Third Wednesdays this past month. I'll be glad to find out where the web site is that has the chart. I sometimes like to travel to other areas to geocache and that would be handy.
  2. In the north-south direction, the distance for one degree should be constant. Has anyone calculated it? If so, what is it? How about for .001 degree? (In the East-West direction it would depend on how far above the equater you are but north-south should be a constant.)
  3. A few months ago I found a cache that had been archived due to a lot of DNFs. When I went to log it, I found it had been archived. I added my log to it and noted that it was still there and in good condition and that it should be restored. The cache owner hadn't checked it, just assumed it was gone. (It is in a "high muggle" area). Happy to find it's still there, it was restored and the difficulty was raised.
  4. Here's am thought for all you people who think "the hunt's the thing" and it doesn't matter whether the cache is a useless micro or a regular cache. TRY BENCHMARK HUNTING! They're everywhere, almost no one hunts them, there's no log book to mess you up, and you don't have to be bothered with trade items. The only difference between them and a micro is a log.
  5. They are a different catagory; size. You can become a premium member and use pocket queries to filter them out, or use a 3rd party software like Gsak to filter them, or use the "ignore" feature to, well, ignore them. The problem is you are just eliminating all micros, both okay ones and lame ones. I'm still looking for the "lame filter". Ed I consider "Size" to be a description and "Micro" to be a category like "Traditional" and "Multi". I would like Micros to be a separate category and carry their own distinctive icon. I also agree that some sort of quality rating would be extremely useful, especially when planning road trips into unfamiliar areas. I agree with edscott completely! Micros, almost by definition, are incapable of holding any trade items and are therefor like virtuals or locationless in that their only purpose is the hunt. Here in the Raleigh, NC area, micros are a plague that, coupled with the propensity for listing caches as being much easier than they really are, makes me hate them with a passion. Were they listed as a category along with a special icon, it should be easy to "ignore" them all. I also agree with the person who said that listing the cache size should be required.
  6. Yes.. I use that excuse nearly every time I DNF In case you don't know, edscott geocaches with a compass and a map only! As an orienteer, he finds his caches by doing research and planning, then hiking out and searching. All those who live in south central PA admire his ability and skill! Personally, I log my DNFs and then put the cache on my "watch list" to see how others fare hunting it in the future. If someone finds it after me, it's my bad. If not, I'll know when it has been fixed and can then take it off my "ignore" list
  7. I've not signed onto the forums before, but thought I'd enter my two cents worth. I sometimes send TBs to a friend on the continent of Europe, especially those with the purpose of going overseas to a specific country. If they waited for a ride with a cacher, they might never move on to their ultimate destination. As a multi TB owner, I love getting emails telling me how far my bugs have gone. I just wish I could go with them! I'd say that unless there is specific instruction to the contrary, sned them on!
  8. Hi, I'm planning to be there. I'll also be going to the MAAM weekendon Saturday or Friday. ChucKremer
