What is the extra code for

not sure what you mean, AFAIK there's only 3 different codes for each trackable: the "secret" tracking number, which you aren't supposed to give out and which is printed on the coin. then the activation code, which you only need for activating and then never again (unless you wanna go through the procedure again to change some details). and the TB code, which is the public equivalent of the tracking number and is publicly displayed on the profile page of the trackable.

It's a good question. I have never used the TB code and do not know under what circumstances it would be used.

The TB code can be useful as a reference when logging a Geocoin in or out of a cache. So you can say, left Geocoin TBXXXX, took Geocoin TBXXXX. Doing this online and in the cache log can aid the Geocoin's owner/Cache's ownerr in the event the Geocoin has been misplaced in a cache.

Its also the code that gets used when you want to adopt a Geocoin over to a different cacher.

the TB code is the equivalent of the GC code for caches. it's used in places where you need to refer to the trackable, but don't want to use the tracking number. the coord.info URLs are one place where they come in handy, and those are also the URLs you see in the notification emails: http://coord.info/TBXXXXX

if the TB code is what the OP is asking about: there's no need to write it down, it's shown on every trackable's profile page.

First thanks for the information . What is AKAIK ? How can the code on the coin be secret ? Anyone who picks up the coin can see it. I think I get the TB code now, it is a code assigned by geocaching.com to track he coin without keying in the number on the coin. Finally the activation code, only used when activating the coin.

Bonus question. If I want to sell a coin that has been activated can I deactivate it and then sell it and supply the activation code?

Many Thanks for the information :D

AFAIK = As Far As I Know

coin code secret = You don't want to post the coin code anywhere, because people can "discover" the coin without actually having seen it. This is against Groundspeak rules and can get your coin locked. Therefore they supply a TB code so you can refer to the coin without giving out the actual code that would allow someone to discover it.

And as dfx said, nope, you can't deactivate a coin. Just adopt it over to someone else.

The statement about "write it down" is old old old....that number is right on the page now, and has been for at least 7 years :D - in the upper left corner for all to see:

Use TBxxxx to reference this item.

You use it to post a note to the trackable page.

For instance, if you're looking for a geocoin, and note that it's not in the cache, you'd use the reference number to log to the trackable page that it's missing (and hope that the trackable owner actually marks it missing )

2.1. Two code numbers for each Trackable, Knowledge Books Article
