Clarkbowman Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Does any one have any good ideas on how I could do a EarthCache at an old Earth Fort? Quote
Carbon Hunter Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Earth fort? Is that a man made fort built from Earth? Or a natural outc rop that was also used as a fort (a la Masada)? Quote

joranda Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 I assume it's made of stone. You can talk about the type of stone and where it came from to how it got there. I'm sure others have great ideas to help you too. Quote
GEO WALKER Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Is there any way you could work in the importance of the local geography/geology? Say a bluff, stream confluence, transportation/trade route and work in the history from there. Quote
Carbon Hunter Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Yes - look at the physical location of a fort - i.e. was it on a hilltop - or valley bottom. Where river structures involved (confluence); or visibility in a certain direction - road systems - did they follow natural features; town/settlement names - are they related to local geography (e.g. Cliffhaven; Chalk Downs; Smythe's Ford; Castle Rock etc.); How did the hill form (volcanic; glacial action; Is the stone used in the fort used elsewhere in the are - where did the stone orignate from (on site - or nearby quarry/area). Just some ideas to look into Quote
mr. bloodhound Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 You may want to check out GC1CXYN This is an Eartcahe at the pre-historic Fort Hill Earthworks in Ohio constructed by Native Americans. Quote
Lostby7 Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 You may want to check out GC1CXYN This is an Eartcahe at the pre-historic Fort Hill Earthworks in Ohio constructed by Native Americans. My understanding is that you can write about this topic so long as you include a geological aspect to it....why did they use this material? What was special about it? Quote
wesleykey Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Man made over 150 years ago. What about the Rock Wall up at Wade Mtn? Do some research on a historical spot like this. Would be an awesome educational opportunity. Quote
