Hiking4
Hi there. I'm from New Brunswick, Canada and I'm new to geo-caching. I recently found my first geocoin. How exciting! It has travelled across 2-3 Canadian provinces, and it wants to travel more. I'd like to help it along with its travels, but had a couple of questions for those of you who are more experieneced in geo-caching. I'm planning a trip to the US next week with my family. We plan to do some geo-caching while there. Is it acceptable to place this geo-coin in another country? If so, is there a protocol I must follow, other than logging its location when I return home? Thanks in advance for your advice and suggestions. Quote Link to comment
+KoosKoos
What's the coin's goal? Is it to stay in Canada? visit certain places? or just to travel? Unless it has a goal to stay in Canada, go ahead and place it on your trip. Most owners who just have general goals love to see the extra miles. I've dropped coins/TBs in Canada from the U.S. and brought some home with me too. Quote Link to comment

Hiking4
Thanks for your speedy replies. Its goal is posted to travel from cache to cache "around the world". It has only been to 3 Canadian provinces within the last 1 1/2 year, so I thought it would be great for it to leave the country when I vacation in the US. If it's going to travel to world, I'd like to help it along if I can....Thanks again. This is a great sport! Quote Link to comment
Hiking4
After reading some of the forum discussions about logging found coins & TBs, it brings to mind another question for you well-seasoned geo-cachers....What if someone picks up the coin in the US, before I've had a chance to get home to Canada to log that I've dropped it off? Is there a potential problem with this? If so, how can this be prevented? I will not have access to a computer while vacationing. (Just thinking ahead)I don't want to ruin the fun for anyone else, and I don't want to anger anyone because of my inexperience. Thanks in advance again, for your thoughts/comments. It's a slight risk, but I wouldn't worry about it. Hopefully, if someone picked it up quickly, they'd be kind enough to give you time to log it before they did. To minimize the chance, write down the coin/TB number before you drop it. If someone "grabs" it from you, you can grab it make, make the appropriate log and offer to help them take it back again if needed. If you're REALLY paranoid about it, put a sticky note on the coint/TB when you drop it saying "I'm on vacation and will need some time to log this into the cache. Please be kind and don't grab it from me until 'date'". Quote Link to comment
Hiking4
Great advice! Thanks again KoosKoos! I am still pretty green, and wouldn't want to offend anyone. Having fun! Quote Link to comment
+ncfinn
When you drop off the coin/TB, attach a note saying that you will not be able to log it until ... When I am on vacation and away from a computer, I add a note and ask the finder to please wait before logging his pick-up. Quote Link to comment

Yes, I live on the border, and have moved dozens and dozens of TB's back and forth across the border. I should say always after checking their goals, and almost every one of the ones I have moved were to travel randomly. Several times I haven't done it if it is a U.S. or Canada specific TB. Ones that want stay in the U.S. are much more common. As far as another one of your posts concerning if someone logging it before you get back home, that is very possible. I almost always find places to log TB's, usually a Library, and most hotel lobbies have an internet-connected terminal for guest use. Speaking as someone who never travels with a lap top, or is much too cheap to call up the internet on the cell phone. Quote Link to comment

Me thinks there will be tons of internet Cafes along the way a Google search will tell you where...... I would stop after the drop and take care of logging the drop. Scubasonic. Quote Link to comment
Hiking4
Great suggestions! Like TheWhiteUrkel, I also tend not to travel with much technology. A relaxing holiday for me includes only the sights and sounds of nature. (Guess that's why I enjoy hiking so much.) I will however, try to seek out an internet cafe, and attempt to log my "drop" ASAP. I think other geo-cachers would appreciate this. I may "drop" the geo-coin as soon as I can within the US (maybe at one of my first stops), and hope that another traveller "grabs" it. My goal is to get it out of Canada. If it truly wants to travel "around the world", it must get out of its country of origin eventually. Thanks for all the great suggestions and speedy replies. I appreciate hearing from all of you experienced geo-cachers! Quote Link to comment
+WeeWillie
When I went away on vacation I waited until the last cache day to drop off TBs so the log in delay was limited. Quote Link to comment
+pokerace
You can find a computer most any where,I've logged from motels, library and other places. That way it gets into cache in a timely manner. I have logged from Vancouver Island without a problem. If you get to Portland Oregon area email me and you can use my computer. Quote Link to comment
+squeakie
I have had someone pick up a tb that I had dropped in the last cache that I found in Canada while traveling back home to Pennsylvania. Before I had a chance to log that I dropped it 10 hours later, some one grabbed it from me. But I did enter the tracking number in my PDA so I had the number to grab it back and make the drop which in turn made them grab it from the cache. I emailed the cacher and told them to wait at least 24 hours the next time before grabbing it from the person. I was also on the reverse end of this kind of scenario a month or so ago Quote Link to comment
