Triangulation Station Resets

There was a recent thread here regarding "Reset" markers. I'm still confused. The issue is not just academic, as I'm soon (hopefully) going to be hunting some "Reset" markers, and I think there may be errors in the database that need to be corrected. My prime example is TZ2013, and there are around 10 others "nearby" that are similar. They all seem to have been "reset". The ones I have read thoroughly seem to have been "re-established" triangulation stations, at the same location as the (much older) original station. BUT - they seem to have retained the same PID (when eventually assigned & entered in the database), but have been named "resets". Furthermore, the newer monumentation date was used, but the much older original log dates were retained. So now there are logs older than the monumenation date, which seems very strange.

 

Any that I can recover (zero chance I can get to all them - please don't ask why), I will document thoroughly. So is TZ2013 a 1878 station or a 1940 station? Should the monumentation date in the database be corrected to 1878? Oh, and the discs are reliably reported to be stamped 1860-1940.

 

Advice from the pro's, please?

I'm not a pro, but I see little point in worrying about such details.

If the NGS saw fit to continue the PID of the original mark using a reset disk, then I am happy to seek that mark and report my results.

Now, if you should find TWO marks at the site (one stamped 1878, and the other stamped 1878-1940), then you would have an issue!

I'm sure someone will be along soon to refute my protocol. ;)

I am not a pro, but here is my understanding according to what I've seen and read.

 

When a vertical control disk is reset, it is stamped with the original designation and the word RESET, and added to the database as a new PID. In the thread you referenced, I included links for four marks that were reset in 2006 near me. The original stations were in danger due to road construction--specifically blasting rock outcroppings back further from the highway.

 

Three of the four of these marks survived, so the database will likely have PIDs for both the originals and the resets.

 

On triangulation stations, the "reset" mark is in the exact position as the original, so there is no chance that there is an original AND the reset. It's a guess, but I'd suspect this is why the original PID is used--it preserves the history of the station. I've recovered at least one that was reset. The designation includes "reset" but the stamping is as described in the thread you referenced, with the original monumentation date and the "reset" date. My understanding (again, I'm not a professional) is that the monumentation date on a triangulation station that has been reset is the date that the station was reset.

With TZ2013 the station was never 'destroyed' only the surface the mark. The subsurface mark was recovered and for some reason a reset was done for it and the the surface marks were reset. The classic example of why it is better to avoid the "Destroyed" logs for Triangulation stations.

 

I don't know why the would change the name to "XXX RESET" and not change the PID#, but I suspect it has to do with the underground mark and it's condition.

Only going by what I've observed...

Some recent examples:

LY2640 Ford Reset. Triangulation station. Set in 1959 by CGS. Reset in 1980 by NGS. Surface marker did not match location of subsurface disk. Renamed Ford Reset, but the same PID, and the description starts at original monumentation. Original disk restamped.

KV6951 Bald Hill Reset. Survey Disk. Not sure this one qualified as a triangulation station, with no azimuth or reference marks. Original station was a copper bolt, monumented in 1882 by CGS, found in 1991, and reset by NJGS. Renamed Bald Hill Reset. Original history lost. (Or maybe it was not included until it was reset?) New disk with two dates stamped on it.

LY2652 Bear Fort Reset. Triangulation station. Originally a copper bolt in bedrock. No underground station. Set in 1882 by CGS. Reset in 1942 by CGS. Description starts in 1882. New disk with two dates stamped.

LY0925 D 260 Reset 1963. Vertical control disk. Original (LY0924) set in 1942 by CGS. Reported destroyed in 1963 by NGS and reset by USCGS. New PID and new description, presumably because it is not at the same exact location. SEven feet difference in elevation.

In the case cited TZ2013, the subsurface station was also reset. That could be why the Description starts with the reset in 1940. It is not exactly the same station, with the subsurface mark rest as well.

Just my opinion from observation. In my examples, the subsurface mark was found intact, or the copper bolt was found in the original hole. (I really wish that they'd leave the copper bolts in plce. It's more fun to find an 1882 copper bolt than a 1942 reset disk!)

There's a hint in this quote from an Army field manual on topographic surveying:

[horizontal control] Reset. This is a station at which the monument and/or station marks have been replaced so that the mark is within 1 centimeter of its original position. A station is reset only from subsurface and/or RMs that have not been moved from their original positions.

Of course, the NGS policy might be different than the Army policy, and policy may have changed over the last 200 years, but it does sound like there is some rhyme and reason to the use of the "reset" designation on horizontal control.

The datasheet raises 2 questions for me.

 

1st, did they use "disks" in 1878? From the datasheet... "STANDARD DISK SET INTO A MASS OF CONCRETE IN A DEPRESSION IN ROCK OUTCROP."

 

The 2nd question is "Was there a station MALVA"? If so, was it reset and named MALVA 2? If MALVA 2 is the original name, then the 1878 date would be the monumentation date for the underground mark and the station.

 

If it is a reset and was named MALVA 2 at the time of the reset then the correct monumentation date would be 1940.

Yes, there is (was) a "Malva 1860", TZ2024 , but it is NOT at the same location at all. It is about 3.5 miles away, and very likely "unfindable" at best. Also I don't think I can get there (lots of "off-limit" areas). I believe that before the PID system came to be, the station designation (name) and date were used, as in "Malva 1860". So I guess in that system Malva 2, TZ2013 should maybe have been Malva 1878. I don't find one that is just "Malva".

 

And - to complicate things, there is ANOTHER "Malva 2", TZ2103, co-located (same disc, two PIDs) with the other Malva 2. One is the Horizontal control Tri-station, one is the Vertical control benchmark. I've seen that before. It's a two-fer! Maybe even a 4-fer, as the RM's are PID'd also! (Four of a kind, I do believe!)

 

BTW, malva is a common bush type plant around here, now more commonly called mallow (no relation to the Mallow Cup candy - for us old-timers :laughing: ). The plant is also tasty, especially the small spring leaves (yes, I have).

Here are 2 benchmarks that one would think were the original benchmark and the other the reset. GQ0282 BROW and GQ0241 BROW 2

 

Care to guess which was set 1st? The point being, just because the name is XXXX2 doesn't necessarily mean it is a reset.

 

Since there are several MALVA stations in the area that would explain the "2" in the name. It appears that even though they did a reset they retained the original PID#,so it appears to be an 1878 monument for that station.

From the history of a few marks in my area I suspect that BROW 2 was actually a reset, just not of the BROW that now exists. I believe it may be a reset of an older BROW that was removed from the record. In 1953 it was reset again and for some reason became just BROW, not BROW 3 as I would expect. Remember, these are human beings doing this and they make mistakes and judgment calls. I wonder about the decisions made at times but I rarely fret over them.

 

Note the wonderful USPSQD recovery of the mark too. A station, two reference marks and an azi, and all they had to say was "Not found".

I can relate a personal experience with resetting a tri sta.

 

Back around 1997 we did a big GPS project. One of the Triangulation stations we wanted to use was found to have been reset from the RM's and the underground station by the USFS but never submitted to NGS. NGS wanted us to establish a new mark as close as we could get to the original position and sent us a new disk with this stamping "PAULDING 2". Because with only the RM's as a check on the USFS work and because the USFS had removed the ug mark, it could not be put back with confidence and had to be repositioned.

 

When ever the mark is moved from its original location, its given the number 2 designation along with the original name. If the mark is restored from the underground mark and then confirmed with network observations, you will have 2 date on the disk, e.g. 1899 1948.

 

Of course there are likely disks that were stamped incorrectly as many other agency's may have found the mark disturbed/destroyed and tried to save it.

 

Also with some old marks that were no survey disks, you may still find 2 dates on the disk. The original date of the mark and the subsequent date NGS recovered the mark, set a new more permanent mark (disk) and re-observed the mark in a precise survey in which other marks in the vicinity were part of the project. And by vicinity it could be hundreds of miles of triangulation.

I would add that I agree with 2 Old Farts. The name MALVA 2 isn't *necessarily* associated with the reset of this station.

 

I posted in another thread--I think on finding AZ marks--about 2 stations in my area. REPUBLIC, RK0574, was set in 1955 in the Republic, MI area. Because the original station was to be destroyed by mining operations, a new station was set in a different spot, and named REPUBLIC 2, RK0575.

 

So yes, it was "reset." But in this case, it's a totally different station in a completely different spot. (EDIT: This situation seems to fit with what Z15 described while I was typing.)

 

Actually, the "original" MALVA 1860 was recovered in good condition in 1868, the same year MALVA 2 was set. It looks to me like they just decided to establish a second station with a similar name in that year.

 

Dolphin, not sure I completely agree with you on it (Malva 2) being a different station. Yes, they reset the subsurface mark, but it appears that they found it intact, initially. So if the subsurface mark was recovered intact, and the position held (however exactly they do that) and then the subsurface mark reset. Would this really be any different in practice than recovering the subsurface mark, holding the position, then resetting the surface mark, as far as the horizontal location of the station? I could be wrong on that one though. I'll be interested in reading more responses from those in the know.

I'm curious on this...I understand from what you said that the the UG mark was removed when the station was reset by the USFS. Was there a question on the integrity of the position of the RMs as well? I thought the purpose of the RMs was to be able to re-establish the station if the station mark was lost. Are you saying that the UG mark is also required to reset the station, or was there something else going on that I'm not following with this situation? What about stations where there are RMs but no where underground mark was set?

The RM's are to help locate the station and or ug mark and verify, not reset the station. When the surface mark is gone, the underground mark is used.

 

The RM's are subject to surface motion and can't be relied upon as gospel. Lacking an ug mark, the station would be lost.

 

We found the ug mark piled in with rocks around the 5 ft (deep) steel pipe and a USFS brass cap set. You would not recognize the UG mark. It was about a 1 lb piece of concrete that looked like a stone. There was no survey disk in it, just a brass carriage bolt that was covered over with a thin film of concrete. We looked all over the area and in the stuff we dug out of the hole to set the new concrete post looking for the ug mark. I found a rock the was flat on top and round on bottom. We looked it over and concluded it was concrete. I spent about 30 min wire brushing the concrete to expose the bolt, it appeared the USFS had not even known the dug up the ug mark because they did not know what to expect. The ug mark was sent to the NGS advisor.

 

Here is one I found and then the NGS Advisor came up and reset it. When the new surface mark was set, the accuracy was downgraded to 3rd order (typical). In 1992 as a part of our project for a US-2 IMT by-pass, Ron Ramsey asked that we use this mark to get it back the the accuracy it once was before he rebuilt it. We did that.

Yes, thanks to all for your thoughts.

After action report:

1) Malva 2, TZ2013 recovered as described.

2) Malva 2, DY2103 recovered as described.

3) No time available to look for the RM's (darn). My time on site was very limited due to matters beyond my control. Well, at least it was a two-fer.

 

From the data available, I still wonder why the disc is marked 1860-1940. My best guess (hope?) is that there was a typo at the time of computer data entry, and the monumentation date should have actually been 1860. I realize the existing disc was placed in 1940. Were discs used during or before 1878 as is indicated in the 1878 Station Description?

 

DaveD - Any chance you can check the file on this one?

 

BTW: Many other interesting recoveries on the trip, details (and poker hands) in work.
