Claret Zip
We have only been caching since Easter so I apologise if this is a well known fact to some of you senior members. But I just wondered, what was the first cache placed in the UK, when and by whom? Is it still there? Quote Link to comment

+CrazyL200
As it's an archived cache, and so is the nearest one to it, would it not be a nice idea to place one (at the original co-ords if possible) to commemorate the UK's first cache. Maybe someone nearby would be able to look into it. I'm sure it would become a popular cache. Edited September 6, 2006 by CrazyL200 Quote Link to comment
+Haggis Hunter
I always thought that England's first was a BETA test for Groundspeak, (hence the fact the owner is one of groundspeaks US lackey's) and that the first actual cache in the UK was Scotlands First. Which still survives to this day. Very much willing to be proved wrong on this of course. Europe's First is located in Ireland, it's still going, although I think it was re-incarnated? +CrazyL200
Point taken, and apologies to the Scots if that's the case, but it'd still be a good one to use for commemorative reasons ?? Quote Link to comment
+Eckington
I always thought that England's first was a BETA test for Groundspeak, (hence the fact the owner is one of groundspeaks US lackey's) I also thought this , until I took the Learned gerbil's advice and went to the very bottom of this page. (The last item on the page) Now I am not so sure Quote Link to comment
+Learned Gerbil
It was a genuine cache that predated GC.com which is why the record looks incomplete. Quote Link to comment
+The Bongtwashes
So presumably Englands First actually commemorates England's Second. Quote Link to comment
Edgemaster
I live fairly close to here and have been meaning to visit this (along with the nearest current cache) for some time now. Whilst there, I'll see if I could get a commemoration cache sited nearby. Quote Link to comment
+Captain Gore-tex
Is there any reason why the original cache (whichever is deemed to be the first) cannot be reinstated by someone else? I can't see any reason why this shouldn't be allowed if it uses the same co-ords and clue. Quote Link to comment
+Learned Gerbil
It is 29th on this list - 100 First Geocaches All predate GC.com IIRC. As for replacing it, it is is an open space. The original cache was buried I think. It is overlooked by nearby houses so would have limited survivability. There is a nearby cache on the same land but currently disabled. Quote Link to comment
Edgemaster
The original cache was buried I think. Nope, from the story page, it was hidden in long grass that died back as the winter neared. It was my fault. By the time October came around, the grasses had died back. No more two meter tall foliage...more like nothing. I took a chance that no one would be walking in the middle of rough turf as opposed to the trimmed grass of the paths. Live and learn...huh? Quote Link to comment
+Learned Gerbil
I knew there was a problem wit hthe original location, but couldn't remember what. The area is completly open, but allowed to grow high for ecology reasons. It is totally unsuitable for a lasting cache, which is probably why I was thinking of burying it - it would be the only way!
