It's been a while since I've been about to get out, but I finally had a chance yesterday. Hiking in the snow is fun. The Sleepy Lion was waiting for us, so a 5+ mile hike was the bait to go find it. Only a few inches of fresh snow to deal with, but gravity proved to be the biggest challenge of the day!

Loved the log entry. A very interesting read/story.

Colorado is going to get hit by a Tsunami? B) Well that should be interesting. :)

If the Tsunami is going to get Colorado at 5000 feet, we are in trouble here in Alabama.

I FELT IT! It was just a small breeze though......

Should be heading your way soon Rocketman....

Hahahaha, I felt it too. B) Also, Hi from Greeley. We are slowly getting back into caching since a break from about 2005. A LOT of changes & caches have popped up since then, so we feel like starting from square one. Cheers!

Welcome back! I think I've seen your name in some of the caches we found - a long time ago - and you're right there are a lot of caches for you to find in the area now. If I remember correctly, there were only 2500-ish caches in the state in 2005. Quite a few more now......

And we may want to be careful, I have also hear that the NW US is getting snow - it may rain in CO.....

Are you trying to make me homesick?

I'm guessing that you are homesick without any help from me...believe me, I know how it feels...

Where in the white stuff are you?

Ooops! Enjoying ourselves a little too much, I guess. Sorry for the delayed response.

We were in the Fraser Valley (Winter Park, etc.) A little downhill skiing, a little cross-country skiing and a little caching. All-in-all, a very good week.

Uh, could you guys prop up your rocks a little better? 14 hours earlier and it could have ruined our whole day...

Massive rockslide shuts down Glenwood Canyon

WHAT????....... you don't recognize that we use things like this to keep people around so they SPEND more money?? :)

The detour adds 2 hours to the trip, and will probably last for a couple of weeks.

Springtime in the Rockies...... gotta love it!

This isn't the first time a hole has been punched in the elevated interstate in Glenwood Canyon. Although I think this has been the worst one.

The CDOT crews were doing clean up and scaling the cliffside of more loose rock and checking the stability of the mountain. It seems that there is another rather large chunk of mountain wanting to come down in that same area.

Geologists and CDOT crews turned their attention Tuesday to another massive boulder which they fear could cause even more damage. This boulder is said to be as large as a mid-sized car, roughly 20 feet in diameter. Geologists arrived at the scene Monday afternoon and spent hours hiking up the mountain to inspect the boulder and determine if it was unstable.

They continued working Tuesday to assess the safety issues around the boulder and decide if it should be blasted in an effort to remove it from the canyon walls. One expert told 9NEWS the boulder is the size of a moving truck.

"If they're able to remove it by hand, it's going to come down in large pieces, and by large pieces, I would say blocks sizes of 8 maybe upwards to 10 feet tall," Ty Ortiz, a CDOT rock fall specialist, said. "So they're going to come down and there's a potential they're going to damage the road, which is another reason that now's the opportunity to do that, right? We already have to repair the road."

CDOT says if the geologists determine the rock is unstable, it will be unable to reopen any lanes of I-70 until mitigation work can be conducted.

Happy St. Pats Day to all of my caching friends of the North Country.

May your finds be memorable and full of swag,

and in a nice location about 3 miles from a road.

Here’s to you and yours,

And to mine and ours,

And if mine and ours ever come

Across you and yours,

I hope you and yours will do

As much for mine and ours,

As mine and ours have done

For you and yours!

The 2010 off road event has been posted. Joe Friday is the primary event planner/host and zoltig is the primary 4x4 trail planner/host this year. I mostly just get to go along for the ride (so to speak).

I can't wait to see everyone out on the trail again.

Just visited your lovely state. Had a blast hitting all the caches around the DIA. During my stay I think I covered 150 caches.

On a side note, if there is any cachers that live around or close to the Ramada Inn on Tower Road could you please contact me? I could use a local cachers help!!

I just moved here a month ago from New Mexico and am enjoying the caches in Northern Colorado. I have a question, I have a geocache back in New Mexico that a fellow cacher wants to adopt, he said something about a form to fill out online. Do any of you know where I can find that? Been looking for a while here :) . Any help would be appreciated!

Enjoyed a little solitude in the hills today. Good chance to remember and reflect on those who 'gave all.'

No hiking for me this weekend, but we still are having a great time!

Boulder County coordinated a CITO on one of their new properties. "100+ tires" turned out to be closer to 300!!!

In Colorado, even the garbage has a good view:

Went out for another hike this weekend - and managed to knock off my 1st 14er of 2010!

No caches allowed along the trail, but I did find the micro in the parking lot! ;)

For those that have not already posted their will attend logs to the Colorado 4x4 event page (if you did, you should have received this announcement):

Team Red Rubicon made an announcement about Mountain Mardi Gras and 4x4 Caching Adventure (Event Cache) on 7/19/2010

Log Date: 7/19/2010

The big summer 4x4 event is shaping up nicely. We already have 73 people attending with 11 vehicles going on the Difficult trail and 21 vehicles going on the Moderate trail.

Here is some updated information that you will want to be aware of:

Trails - Trail conditions are looking great. The Wheeler Lake trail has been open all the way to the top for weeks now and Mosquito Pass has just opened up all the way over the pass this week. The pre-run crew will be out on both trails this weekend and you might even see a few new caches show up. Final meeting locations and times should be posted next week.

Shirts - Joe Friday has designed a really cool shirt for this event and will be selling them at cost again. Make sure you check out the event page for images and pre-ordering information.

Coins - There will be a special event coin that will be available at the event. See the event page for more details.

Raffle - The raffle items are coming together. Check back on the event page later this week to see the list of cool stuff.

Meal - There will be free food as usual. The menu is not final yet. Check back on the event page next week for menu details.

Porta Potties - There will be porta potties at the event location again this year.

We are really looking forward to seeing everyone at the event in a few weeks.

So, my son, who is high functioning autistic and our family have started geocaching. we started doing research about a year ago. We have found about 11 in two weekends (we have finally been able to work out some weekends). So, the problems that we have been having are probably normal ones of not knowing what we are looking for. Not knowing anyone else that does this. I think a little advice from others in the area or maybe a mutual geocache trip between us would be great for tips. So far the ones in the light poles have been our easiest finds. we found one in a tree. and a couple under trees. But, we are still kind of trying to learn how to do this and to do it right. how to decide if our coordinates are off or if we are standing right around it and just missing it. I would love it if we could connect with someone local that maybe could help me out. My husband isn't really really into it bugt I think when we get to the walking ones that are a little further out he might get more into it. But the kids love to clean up the area (they are 14 and 16 and believe it or not see this as a great community service thing.) Of course the find is the excitement. Currently they do ok we each fill up a bag (we have smallish bags), then we will look really hard for the cache. I think they are disappointed when the area is already clean. but, they really would love to get some tips from someone with some actual experience. So far we have done ok. We have two we haven't found. Then the next day, someone goes and finds it. We are 2 no finds and 11 finds. But they are mostly the ones in the light poles. So, I would love to connect with other locals and get some tips. Thanks! We live in Aurora. We have a pretty good trade kit and have a ready to go cache when we are ready to place our first one. We also have three travel bugs and a geocoin to get out into the mix. We are also looking for a travel bug to move to Illinois when we go there for a wedding in Illinois! So, we are hoping on one of these trips to actually find one where it says it is.

Famagee - Welcome to geocaching! I'm sure you're going to be in for a ton of fun; there's plenty of caches around to find, and those light poles get repative pretty quick. We're a bit further North than you, so I'm not sure how much help we can offer you.

There might be good places closer to you, but there's a good variety of caches at the Adams County Regional Park; a cache in the park is called Jamocha's Jewels. There's plenty of caches there - small, micro, and medium. And they offer a variety of different hiding styles for you too - from the fairly easy to ones that will make you scratch your head for a bit.

As for me - I prefer the ones a little further away from town.

We are always travelling all over we have friends in Lochbuie and Thornton and my in laws live in Sugar city. So we are thinking when we travel down we will break up that long long trip with a little bit of caching. Should be interesting. My inlaws also own land up in Bailey. So we go all over eastern Colorado on a pretty regular basis. Don't know if we are up for climbing that high yet. (I am from CT Mountain roads scare the heck out of me. And I am petrified of heights). So we aren't that brave yet. But, my son has been gung ho to do this. He loves when people put the clues in a code. even though I know I can push a button and read it, I don't tell him. i let him figure it out. The kids take turns signing the logs. Our Garmin for our car pops up caches when they are nearby sometimes but no all the time so it is strange. Can't figure that part out. But we have a handheld etrex also for caching. We have a few that we are looking to do locally and are excited because we found about five of them up in the area of missouri and Illinois we will be at in September. We are thinking perhaps of trying to figure out where we will be about 10 hours into our drive and stopping for a cache or two and on the way back it will light so we are going to try to pull our route and make a cache in every state on the way back. Fingers crossed we can do it. Yeah I am pretty bored with teh light poles but the kids think they are great. We were going to go hit a good big one a little bit of a walk in a park, but there was something huge going on in the park and we said um yeah not a good day to be stealthy. can you be stealthy with about 1000 people around? I am thinking no. But, if you guys are ever coming down this way please shoot me a line and let me know. i saw the post about the mardi gras thing. I am going to talk to my hubby tomorrow about maybe going up for that. We know that area cuz of the inlaws land. Never really thought of checking for caches.) Could make for a great family day! And being able to meet other cachers would be great!

Welcome to geocaching Famagee. If you are interested in meeting and getting together with other geocachers, first I would suggest that you attend an event or two. If you just go to the list of all caches in Colorado, you will find the events at the top of the list: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.aspx?state_id=6

Another place you can look if you want to meet up with other cachers is in the local forums. They have a specific section called "Let's Go Caching": http://www.geocachingcolo.com/forums/ You can post a planned cache run there.

Good Luck and hope to see you at the 4x4 event. If you do plan to attend, please post a "Will Attend" log so that we can put you in the count and so that you will receive future announcements.

Take care,

RocketMan

just moved to colorado and im looking for interesting and unique caches

Welcome to Colorado!

Don't know what part of the state you're in but you're in the right place. A lot of interesting and unique cachers were up in Fairplay at the Mountain Mardi Gras and 4x4 Caching Adventure event this weekend when you made your post.

We found several interesting and unique caches while up there including a new FAVE, Penelope (A Night Cache) so we'll recommend that.

The scenery is AWESOME and the wild flowers spectacular up there right now and in another month or so the fall foliage will be worth the trip alone.

You might also want to check out Geocaching Colorado.

Sign in and introduce yourself and you will find info on all sorts of interesting and unique caches as well as meet some interesting and unique cachers.

Again,

Welcome to CO.

If you get up to the Ft.Collins/Greeley area, look us up!
