How Many Is Too Many? And Any Ideas?

How many people are too many to try to take out geocaching? I want to try it out, but don't have a GPS yet? Talked with a friend who has a GPS and now it has turned into an "event" with about 8 people? Is this too many?

Does anybody have any suggestions on a good first cache to hunt for in the Cleveland area (west side) for a large group?

I'm really just trying to decide if I want to invest in a GPS.

Thanks!

We normally go with just two or three of us....however, after an event, or during a desert 4x4 trip, we've had up to 10 carloads full of cachers. A hiking event in the desert brought over 30 cachers to hike along a 2 mile loop. It depends what you are trying to find. If you are powercaching thru town, I'd try to keep it down to 2 cars max..

For an "urban" run, I'd say a group of no more than 4 is ideal (essentially, one car load). That's enough that you can fan out at a location, but not so many that individuals don't all have the opportunity to participate. More than one car load often results in the second car just "tagging along" and not having the fun of doing the search.

Hikes in the woods, etc. can be fine for larger groups since the experience is more in "getting there" than actually finding the cache.

I've gone alone, in a small group of 3-5, and in groups as large as 30 or 40 people. I must say, I like the small group best.

Here is one method we use if we are going slow....like on a hike with kids along.

When you spot the cache,...you step away from where you found it, and then just say "found it".

Every cacher gets to hunt for it, until everyone has spotted it.

Everyone gets to find every cache this way.

That would be the Huckle-Buckle-Beanstalk method.

To see a video of this I would pay a princely sum. <_<:D

Check out the Geochums. They can tell you more about the caches in their area. We are "out of towners" (~125 miles south), who visit/cache there on occasion.

We attended an evert & cached in the Lorain County on the Mother's Day weekend and were in the Akron area this past weekend. We are a Geo Chum and frequent their forums.
