tarotreader3
I read that burned cd's were not ok, however, what is the status of mixed tapes? Although they are identicle, people seem to regard them differently. Now, mind you, here in canada MP3's are legal (so burned music cd's are not illegal as they, perhaps, are in other parts of the world) but as a general rule are mixed tapes ok, or no good? +Renegade Knight
MP3's are legal in the USA and most places. What the true issue is, is the copyright. If you have permission to leave the copy you are good to go. If the tape or CD contains public domain music you are good to go. If it's pirated it's pirated and that's not good. Quote Link to comment

+Lostboy1966
Interesting subject, which I have some concerns about as well. I'm thinking about setting up a puzzle where I leave CDs containing music that, when the title-related clues are reported back to me, enter the finder into a raffle for a Groundspeak gift certificate. I am a legitimate owner of all of the tracks that I'm planning to burn to the CDs (paid for the original disks). Will the recording industry Nazis come down on me like I was a fourteen year old using Kazaa or Limewire? I understand the need to protect intellectual property, but where is the line drawn? Just a thought.. Quote Link to comment
+Markwell
Will they come down on you, probably not. Is it against the copyright laws in the U.S.? Yes. You own the rights to the ORIGINAL disks, not the rights to make copies and distribute the disks. If you want to put your original disks in the cache, feel free. Quote Link to comment
tarotreader3
so provided that it's all nice and legal, mix tapes can be a dainty addition to a cache? is that what i'm hearing? ...anyone know how they'd hold up though? probably get hurt in the heat, or in the cold, i'd imagine. +GPSOkie
Here in the USA, they would be illegal. I don't know what the laws are in other countries, though. I am going to use CD with freeware and shareware, but no music. Quote Link to comment

I'm from Canada too and the legality of MP3 is not the issue. MP3s are legal everywhere. Its a media encoding format not the product. The issue is copyright of the music or audio encoded in MP3.. When you burn a CD or make a tape for yourself that is legal. However, when you give the burned (or taped copy) away or sell it, that's when you are breaking copyright. The media, tape or CD, makes no difference. Canada's copyright laws are the same in the regard as the US laws that markwell mentions. JDandDD Quote Link to comment
tarotreader3
JDandDD: I just checked the laws again, and you're right of course. In canada it's legal to make copies of copyrighted music for personal use only. As such it's legal to download mp3s, and make mixed tapes; however, it is illegal to then pass that tape along, or to upload mp3s. Quote Link to comment
