  1. Assuming I won't have a lot of time to devote to hunting, what are the best containers/hides in the area? Advice is appreciated.
  2. I saw this thread come up way back when and started reading through it, but stopped because it wasn't a subject that hooked my attention much. I finally scrolled through the contents, and the quote above best summed up my take on it. 👍
  3. I've been at it since 2005, and am barely over 300. Good on you!
  4. I don't do gadget caches (yet), I just enjoy making odd containers. Not gonna lie, I've been playing since 2005 and had to look up what a 'petling' was. I assumed it was some kind of weird furry-like fetish, now I see it's just those preform micro containers. Glad to see I was wrong! Either way, not my style of hide, but to each their own...
  5. That descriptive has always stuck in my craw a bit, to be honest. I'm all for the 'we all are free to play the game our own way' mantra. My mantra happens to be putting a lot of effort into (hopefully) fun container builds. So yes, sometimes my only reason for placing a hide IS for the geocache. I have not had many complaints so far. As for the original subject of the thread; would I prefer it if some of the saturated parks in my area opened up so I could put some new hides in? You bet. At my current stage of the hobby, I'm not much interested in having to maintain anything more than 10 miles from my home coordinates, and the locations are getting thin, especially because I avoid micros in urban areas (that mantra thing again - you be you). I have a stack of 5 series-themed containers that have been sitting in my garage for months because I'm having difficulty finding an area close enough to place them to my liking. Do I fault the other players that got to those locations first with their hides? Nope. That's just the way the satellite bounces.
  6. Thanks to my 'Revuah' , the Mods here, and anyone else that helps to keep the game running!
  7. Not necessarily on topic, but this thread is why I find the forums so interesting. A scenario I never thought of being discussed openly with helpful comments from the community. Thumbs up!
  8. Being a slow-paced finder, I don't download to my device that often. After some tinkering and testing, it seems there are just certain caches that refuse the Send To Garmin command. Very odd. I can easily work around it by downloading the GPX instead, but I just wanted to drop the observation off in case anyone else has noticed this behavior.
  9. I've noticed that when I use the Send To Garmin option when downloading caches that it works the first few times, but then starts failing. Is it just me, or does anyone else have this issue? I'm using a 64sx, and have had the same problem with a 20x. Frustrating.
  10. Please keep us updated! I've got a fiver on the Letterbox option.
  11. Hide unto others as you would find yourself is what I go by. Natch, this can be interpreted differently by everyone that plays the game.
  12. Just to be clear, that was meant to be a light-hearted compliment to the GC maintenance staff. I swear, you can't post anything on the internet without someone getting offended these days.
  13. I'm in IT support, and over the past several years I've become increasingly annoyed with 'cute' error messages from websites. If I'm trying to manage a client's email system and I can't log in to the portal to do so, don't show me a frown emoji and a 'Whoopsie-doodle, something went wrong' error message. It's infuriating. Be professional, fer cripe's sake! Having vented about that, I tried to pop into the forum earlier today and got this gem. I literally laughed out loud. Nice cable management, Signal!
  14. Always a risk, to be sure. This stuff might act more like floss, though.
  15. Please note that I said 'I'm sure there are exceptions', and used the term geotrash multiple times. If I came across a sack of McDonald's wrappers tossed along a trail, my first thought would not be "perhaps this stuff is placed with permission". For every example that can be found of an archived cache still being active on some other platform, I'd be willing to bet there are hundreds that are abandoned plastic, and therefore litter. I would 'steal' those McDonald's wrappers and never lose a wink of sleep over it. Peace!
  16. I used this on one, and it has been doing pretty well: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07ZDFXP3C/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 100 lb. test, super thin paracord. String it through some branches and it is very difficult to spot. I attached a small metal plate to the container (Lock&Lock) to give it enough heft to lower easy once you found the spool at ground level.
  17. As others have said, when a cache gets to the point of a NA (or even a non-responded to NM), the odds are that the owner has already bailed on it, and won't reply to any adoption requests. I'm sure there are exceptions, but in general these hides are set to become geotrash. What I'd like to see is an option to view nearby archived hides so I can opt to go clean them up if they look like they have been abandoned. I have created a Notification for myself that sends me an alert when something close gets a "Log type(s): Archive, Needs Archived, Temporarily Disable Listing, Needs Maintenance". Admittedly, this is more opportunistic than altruistic; yes, I'd happily clean up some geotrash, but I also want to know where a new hide spot opens up!
  18. I started posting photos of my rebuild here, but decided to remove them as they were kind of redundant in this thread. I may repost them under a category more dedicated to container construction.
  19. I leave fake pirate 'gold' coins when I have them, just for the kids.
  20. There's a Community Celebration Event coming up nearby. Time to reboot! I'm not proud. Or tired.
  21. Handlebar mustaches and stovepipe hats, preferably with a black cape.
  22. If I am especially concerned about photos (I usually am) I add a line to the cache page stating Please do not post spoiler photos in your log just for added emphasis.
  23. Add my voice to the 'the new default view makes no sense' chorus here.
