  1. It's audacious. I've spent the past few months saving up my GooglePlay dollars to buy the $11.99 app, so I could use the official interface to geocache. Now I find out, rather than paying $12 bucks (in Canada) to buy the app, I need to actually pay a yearly membership? That's ridiculous. I can use C:Geo to see all the apps that aren't rated premium. I wanted to support the community, and I thought paying a one time - extremely high - app fee would do it. But now they want to take money every single year? No thanks. I'll keep using c:Geo for free. If a company is willing to cut off people who have supported them, that's their choice. There are a lot of people saying that there are other options. And there are. Using a free app is one of them. But why the official app wouldn't let you do as much as free apps is beyond me. Give people all the standard caches, and make them want to pay for premium. At this rate, they'll just use apps that don't even mention the premium caches, so there will never be an incentive to upgrade. I'm sure they think they know what they're doing - but it cost them one app purchase at least.
  2. so, battery chargers on convertors = no good. you can get cig adapters for the 15 min charge, AND multi port hook ups exist? Well i've certainly gained much more information than I thought I would from this. Time to look into these options.
  3. why use battery power? Because my car only has one cig adapter, and I need to run a bunch of things all at once (mp3 player, digital camera, memory card cd burner, gps, and some other hideous things... it's a road trip so all electronics need to be powered through that port). If I use the GPS cig adapter then that blocks my only power source, however if I use the thing that turns the adapter into a regular outlet, i hook a powerbar up to that, and can run all of them (while constantly cycling through the battery charging/replacing for my GPSr)
  4. the question was asked because I'm wondering how long the GPS will last with the backlight on the whole time. If it will maintain for 3 hours, then I can just keep switching the batteries that i'm charging, and always have a full charge for the field (plus an extra two), as well as a good cycle of constant power in the car. if the GPSr will drain the two AA's in under three hours, then the charger may become neccisary.
  5. I've had SanDisk SD cards crap out on me in cameras before, so that one picture each time is corrupt, and thus unviewable. It's normally the ' best picture of the roll" too... now that could be just because i can't see it. who's to say? anyway, i would hate to see what a corruption in the maps could do. so i feel your fear, however, i've not had any problems with my 512 in my Legend csx. I mean, it's not really like there are any alternatives either, are there? Also, this card that messed up on me was from 4 or 5 years ago. i'm sure things have changed since then. ...now as for losing that tiny little card, that's a different thing all together.
  6. I have checked other forum posts for a while now, and couldn't find anything specific to my question. So I'll post it here. I was wondering if the Cigarette adapter was worth buying. Now, I'll be in the car for quite a while. Looking at maybe 12+ hours of driving, lets just say i'm driving a full 24, i'm still wondering if the adapter is the power supply route to go. I have 2300mah rechargalbe batteries. I also have a thing (forget the name) that converts the cig port in my car into a normal "plug socket". So if I had my battery charger hooked up to that, charging 4 AA's while the 2 in the system were being used, would I be able to maintain constant power? I guess the real question is: Lets say you're using your Garmin Legend Cx with the backlight turned on, on the map screen, in 'normal' mode. How long will those two batteries last? If they last 8 hours, it seems I would be in the clear. Now, the package claims 36 hours in "battery saver mode, with no backlight" so i'm just wondering what that crazy little thing can actually do when it has the power draining things turned on. Thanks.
  7. I've been using my Garmin Legend, with no problem, until today. Held up to my Legend Cx this was off by about ten meters. Also, while it claims to be accurate to 6 meters, the circle surrounding that delightful little triangle is actually showing it's off by 50 meters or more. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if so what did you do about it? I'm finding that it's NS is accurate, but the EW is off by quite a bit. is such a thing possible? Thanks.
  8. Is there any quick way to do this? If I download 100+ files, can I add them all to one quickly, or do i have to copy over one by one? I've tried a search, but since LOC is under 4 characters i can't look for it.
  9. I love the religious pamplet idea. Nothing like turning into a creepy religion-pusher. Why stop with ones you've found? Why not create your own. It's far more fun when you can walk them, step by step, through this fabulous new-fangled faith of yours.
  10. I just spent the last little while programming waypoints for all the TTC Subway stations in Toronto, and I was thinking there could be other people that would want said waypoints. And I'm sure other people have programmed waypoints that I would want. I searched google for waypoint collections, and I found a few. Mostly for America, and some for europe. Very few for canada. I was wondering if there was one central spot for way point collections?
  11. I live in canada, and have been searching around to pick up a Legend Cx, and microSD card for it. The cheapest I've found (even after delivery fees) is from gpscentral.com It's a canadian based website. Before I make my purchase, however, i'd like to you if anyone has bought from that site, and if so, what type of service did you recieve? Was it quick? Good working order? professional? and if you had any problems with your unit, how did they handle that? thanks for the info. I did a search for gpscentral before i posted this topic, but I couldn't find any review of their service. thanks.
  12. JDandDD: I just checked the laws again, and you're right of course. In canada it's legal to make copies of copyrighted music for personal use only. As such it's legal to download mp3s, and make mixed tapes; however, it is illegal to then pass that tape along, or to upload mp3s.
  13. Would any roads that support auto routing in the MapSource program on a desktop computer support auto routing on the gsp? (thanks for the info, by the way. Good to know there's a basemap on the x units)
  14. lordfishman: thanks for the tips. So colour is a good thing, huh? I wish I knew someone with the unit to check it out. I was wondering if I'd want the Cx perhaps. The memory cards seem like it would be great (however, I hear that units with the memory cards no longer have a permenant basemap. Is this true?) Also, what mapset do you use for your auto routing? I read something somewhere (gpscentral.com i think) that led me to believe that autorouting does not work with canadaTOPO. I'd like to be sure that it does before I go out and purchase the unit.
  15. I find myself in a bit of a pickle. You see, I currently have the legend, and I enjoy everything it has to offer. The one draw back? No autorouting. I've decided, after playing with it the last few days, and seeing what it can do when hooked up with CanadaTOPO that auto routing is a feature that would be incredibly useful. It would increase its functionality ten fold. that is what i imagine right now, anyway. So now I'm thinking of the LegendC. 3 times the mapstorage space, USB cable, colour... wait. that's the problem for me, isn't it? I don't really like the colour screen. And maybe it's just me wanting something that feel "rugged" but the colour screen seems to take away the functional outdoorsman tool, and turn it into a new trendy cyber toy. (please, tell me this isn't so, if you own the Lc and love it. any feedback on what the colour is like would be fantastic too. does it improve maps? help you out at all?) So now I'm looking at the 60. It's only 40 bucks more than the Lc and it brings back that rugged monochrome screen. It gives me the space. It gives me the autorouting. It throws in that external antenna to boot. So now, clearly, I have no idea what one I should end up buying. Any suggestions would be great. Thing's I'd like to know the advantages/disadvantages of are as follows: Auto-Routing Colour Screen Ext. Antenna. Thanks ever so much.
  16. I've been reading tarot cards for the last 7 - 8 years. As for the three, I like having a unique name that I can use anywhere, and I've seen one or two other tarotreader's so i slammed the three down (Arbitrarily) and it's stuck ever since. it also allows me a great three initial set to put into arcade machines when i get a high score : tr3 (note: all lowercase)
  17. i'd have to say that the benifit is that you can easily use the click stick. They make them this way so all of the controls fall nicely into place where you'd want them to. I've tried turning it upside down,a nd while, obviously, it still feels alright, the click stick isn't nearly as comfortable, and when you want to use it, you have to shift the unit a bit so you can move your thumb from stabalizing the unit in your palm.
  18. so provided that it's all nice and legal, mix tapes can be a dainty addition to a cache? is that what i'm hearing? ...anyone know how they'd hold up though? probably get hurt in the heat, or in the cold, i'd imagine.
  19. I read that burned cd's were not ok, however, what is the status of mixed tapes? Although they are identicle, people seem to regard them differently. Now, mind you, here in canada MP3's are legal (so burned music cd's are not illegal as they, perhaps, are in other parts of the world) but as a general rule are mixed tapes ok, or no good?
  20. excellent. thanks for all the tips, i'll check those out now.
  21. I'm new to this scene, and I was playing around with easyGPS and noticed that you could upload and download tracks from your GPS unit to it. I was wondering if there were any websites, organized similar to this one, that had tracks laid out that would make ideal hikes? I've tried searching these forums, and also google, but I havn't come up with anything (perhaps i'm just not the websearcher I thought I was.) Any help would be greatly appreciated. -tr3
