axetowax
Help! We were at a geocache chat a few weeks ago and someone there had a palm pilot with about 500 caches listed. We were thinking of getting one but no idea where to start or what to get. Anybody out there who can help? Thanks! axetowax Quote Link to comment
JDandDD
A couple of things will help us all answer your question better. There are a lot of choices in the Palm field. Do you want to use it for other things than geocaching? Street mapping, organizer, games, business apps etc. Do you want to be able to connect to a bluetooth GPS eventually? Personally, I have a Palm T|X with a bluetooth GPS, Cachemate/cachenav for caching, Fugawi for topo maps and looking at TomTom navigator for street mapping. This is an adjunct to my Magellan Platinum GPS. JDandDD Quote Link to comment
briansnat
If you just want it for caching, get a cheapie with around 8 megs of storage. You can pick up an M505 or equivilent Palm on Ebay for around $30 bucks. That way if you trash the unit you aren't out a lot of money. Then all you need is Cachemate and you're set. +The Jester
I've used a Palm M125 for a couple of years now. I was able to buy one recently from that "online auction place" for less than $10 (with cradles). Normally about 15-30 dollars is normal. I can place around 1200 caches on it (using CacheMate) and many more that number on the SD card. One nice thing about the older, cheap models is that if you drop it in the woods you don't risk as much as the pricer, fancier ones. Quote Link to comment
Cheminer Will
My son and I both use Palm M500's from eBay. $25.00 to 30.00, I believe. I have way more than 500 caches on it sometimes. We use it in conjunction with Cachemate and GSAK. Lots of threads with great information and opinions about this in the hardware forum. Edited January 29, 2006 by Cheminer Will Quote Link to comment

axetowax
Thanks to everyone who responded! Gave us some idea of what we want. Just plan on using it for caching right now, so the cheaper, the better! Thanks again! axetowax Quote Link to comment
Team GPSaxophone
I used an M130 until it wore out, then switched to an M505. The screen is larger, so I like it better. The biggest problem I have is that the power button is too easy to push - it turns on and off by itself when it's in my backpack. Maybe they should design that button to require a double click Quote Link to comment
