scwalker
Where can I find a list of items deemed inappropriate for trading in a cache? I saw a comment in a log about someone removing some firecrackers that had been left in a cache and I was wondering about whether or not small pocket knives are acceptable. Thanks, Steve Quote Link to comment
+cache_test_dummies
From the Geocaching FAQ: What shouldn't be in a cache? Use your common sense in most cases. Explosives, ammo, knives, drugs, and alcohol shouldn't be placed in a cache. Respect the local laws. All ages of people hide and seek caches, so use some thought before placing an item into a cache. Food items are ALWAYS a BAD IDEA. Animals have better noses than humans, and in some cases caches have been chewed through and destroyed because of food items in a cache. Please do not put food in a cache. Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
Fireworks and pocket knives are not allowed. It might sound silly to ban pocket knives, but one park system banned geocaching because a log mentioned a pocket knife being traded. They called it a 'weapon' and issued a park system wide ban on the sport. Just use your common sense. Anything that is illegal or dangerous should not go in caches. Alcohol, drugs, box cutters, pornography, tobacco and similar items should't be placed in caches. Ask yourself what the management of the park would think of geocaching if they found this item in the cache. Quote Link to comment
Stearmandriver
It's a shame that certain things have to be banned because there are those who would use them irresponsibly. I mean, I completely agree that the bans are appropriate because there's no doubt that some people would be irresponsible, but it's still a shame. I'm a homebrewer, and it's occurred to me what great swag a couple bottles of a really unique and tasty brew would make, but that's a big no-no, of course. Oh well... plenty of fun stuff that can't hurt anyone. Quote Link to comment
+Stonebreaker73
A lot of reviewers frown on personal or scented items too. Lip balm, shampoo, soaps, even sunscreen. Things that would seem innocent enough. Quote Link to comment
+Miragee
Some cachers also frown on scented items. The chemicals that create the scent can cause someone to have an allergic-type reaction. I prefer keeping the fresh air fresh by not adding scent to it by opening up an ammo can in which someone has placed a scented candle or scented soap. Quote Link to comment
+Zzyzx Road
... it's occurred to me what great swag a couple bottles of a really unique and tasty brew would make, but that's a big no-no, of course... You could put an invite or "coupon" for some in a cache as a FTF, thus allowing someone to "find" your place (as a coordinate of course!) for a sample of your home-made delight! Quote Link to comment
+Thrak
High value bearer bonds, krugerrands, microsoft stock, etc. All make great swag. Please cache in my area. Quote Link to comment

You can place your homebrew in an event cache to great effect. Quote Link to comment

Things that would seem innocent enough. Heavily scented items can attract animals. Add scented candles, pot pourri, air fresheners, etc... to the list things that are not the best idea Quote Link to comment
