From the Geocaching FAQ:

What shouldn't be in a cache?

Use your common sense in most cases. Explosives, ammo, knives, drugs, and alcohol shouldn't be placed in a cache. Respect the local laws. All ages of people hide and seek caches, so use some thought before placing an item into a cache.

Food items are ALWAYS a BAD IDEA. Animals have better noses than humans, and in some cases caches have been chewed through and destroyed because of food items in a cache. Please do not put food in a cache.

Fireworks and pocket knives are not allowed. It might sound silly to ban pocket knives, but one park system banned geocaching because a log mentioned a pocket knife being traded. They called it a 'weapon' and issued a park system wide ban on the sport.

Just use your common sense. Anything that is illegal or dangerous should not go in caches. Alcohol, drugs, box cutters, pornography, tobacco and similar items should't be placed in caches.

Ask yourself what the management of the park would think of geocaching if they found this item in the cache.

It's a shame that certain things have to be banned because there are those who would use them irresponsibly. I mean, I completely agree that the bans are appropriate because there's no doubt that some people would be irresponsible, but it's still a shame. I'm a homebrewer, and it's occurred to me what great swag a couple bottles of a really unique and tasty brew would make, but that's a big no-no, of course.

Oh well... plenty of fun stuff that can't hurt anyone.

Some cachers also frown on scented items. :) The chemicals that create the scent can cause someone to have an allergic-type reaction.

I prefer keeping the fresh air fresh by not adding scent to it by opening up an ammo can in which someone has placed a scented candle or scented soap. :)

You could put an invite or "coupon" for some in a cache as a FTF, thus allowing someone to "find" your place (as a coordinate of course!) for a sample of your home-made delight!
