+FlagMan Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 Finally run to ground by the Dirty Dozen ... what next? Note to Self: They just don't make movies like this any more. Hey Harmon, that's a clever touch on the poster. I love it, Harmon!! I've been out of touch with the internet since Monday so I'm just seeing this for the first time. Very fun!! Can't wait to hike to these caches! Maybe I'll rent the movie, too. Nancy, Not sure that a tough-guy WWII flick of this sort is appropriate for Pt. Loma residents. The section of the poster where it says "EXCITE THEM!" is very much out of touch with present-day society. Just so you'll know, Harmon Hmmmm........defined by my place of residence, eh??? I think Harmon just wants you to come out to Lakeside -- its much more exciting out there!! Pretty cool poster, Pal!! Thanks for including me. I think I just have one or two more hikes to clear it all out. Are we talking Hall of Fame?!? If you don't do it maybe I will. Nancy, My remark had more to do with the redkneck tri-cities than with Point Loma. FlagMan, I've been so hoping that you would offer to set up an honor role for this campaign. Good news is that the campaign is almost finished. OK, Pal. Consider it done. Let me know when the campaign is finished and, as soon as I qualify for the HoF, I'll place a HoF cache... It's definitely over, here's the proof. An authentic Middle Peak Grotesque that almost bit me in the rump. Tell me true, ain't that creepy? Besides, BlondHiLites upstaged me with her cute doggie images for her Sugar Pine Trail hides. I'm whupped! As far as the Cuyamaca HOF goes I'm also whupped; maybe I should have slowed down and grabbed all of those finds I bypassed along the way. No problem, just boils down to more hikes that are sure to be good for my hearteries. One thing for sure, the Cuyamaca HOF list is sure to be headed by FlagMan ... such an animal, day and night. Goferit! Poor ol' Harmon OK, give me a week or so, weather permitting, to grab these new ones and the ones on and around the Airplane Monument hike and I'll put one out. That is, unless someone else beats me to it. My criteria is that I need to qualify before I create a HoF, but that's just me. But we should definitely have one for this area... Quote

+SD Rowdies Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 (edited) This just in ... If you've been watching and wondering about references to trees that have fallen across Middle Peak trails then see here what the intrepid hikers have encountered in that way. That's BlondHiLites doing what it takes to climb, crawl, twist, and crash through the detritus found at many spots along either stretch of Black Oak Trail. There's a bonus round along the eastern stretch of the trail where when part-way through one timber pile you'll spot a second one that adjoins the first. Middle Peak compares favorably with video games and theme parks. Try it on a rainy or snowy day, you'll never forget it. Life is good, Harmon SD Rowdies Note to Self: Ees not for seesies. +SD Rowdies Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 (edited) You still got it, Harmon! and you can touch your toes! impressive Sock it to me Denise ... Going into the Cuyamaca Campaign I owned six pair of very fine hiking socks. Now there are three orphans of the six pair in my sock drawer. Three socks worn two at a time is the same as having three pair from a wear point of view and so I am hopeful for a few more outings with the oprphaned socks. Spent $69.62 at REI yesterday, even with the 20% membership discount, for four pair of highly recommended Mareno Wool hiking socks featuring every advanced footwear feature know to mankind. They even told me that one pair are the self-same socks worn by Sherpa Tensing in the first-ever ascent of Everest in 1953. Shoot, socks don't get no gooder than that do they? Seems to me that this is an unusual expense for an old man of seven and seventy; and so, I'm up early this morning searching the Internet for sites that offer government grants for socking it to aged hikers. Two of them scoffed at me but the eleven year old asked "For seven fifty?" Well that went on for a bit and was settled at her wearing my smelly and holey old sock past sundown for ten bucks. +SD Rowdies Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 (edited) This just way in ... Denise made me do it. Note to Self: Just kidding of course. A Harmon hide in the bloody scrub oak O sure, blame it on me. Just so happens that I clearly recall who it was that was doing all the giggling, laughing, and cheerleading while I was so carefully placing a hanger inside that scrub-oak thicket. For some odd reason the final trail of Middle Peak brought out a measure of mischief in the two of us. Maybe it was a reaction to having placed all of the other caches of the Cuyamaca Campaign that have spoiler photos, revealing hints, guide rocks, and more. Next campaign we'll include neon arrows that point flashingly toward the containers. Cracks me up, web-page photos now and then that actually show the container. The really funny part is that there has been two or three whiny log-entries about having to search for a hide for a few minutes. You may recall that sort of hide; for example, "Three feet above stone." Sheesh! Edited April 14, 2012 by SD Rowdies Quote

+SD Rowdies Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 (edited) Not wishing to discourage anyone, we held off posting the below picture taken by a ranger friend out the door at the Laguna ranger station one week ago today. But after looking closely at this and noticing how full he is we started to worry that someone taking on Harmon's challenge might have come accross this guy. Impressive paw-prints on most of the trails each and every day, for sure they are there and for sure they are active. My one moment of personal concern was on Fern Flat Fire Road early one morning ... I heard a droning sound that at first sense I took for a throaty growl. I admit to a moment of hightened awareness. Turned out that the sound was that of an unseen and idling forest-service truck briefly revved a few times some distance from me. Not sure that repellant sprays or any other defensive measure would ward off an attack from a Ford truck. Our only assurances are that Mountain Lion attacks are infrequent and that they are for the most part a nocturnal hunter. Of course that sort of information wasn't at all useful to Iris M. Kenna back in 1994. One often hears cautionary advice to never hike alone. Makes some sense to me, giving a Mountain Lion two or more choices would falsely seem to improve one's odds. Not really ... only two outcomes for everyone involved and so that's a simple fifty-fifty deal all around. To hike trails through Mountain Lion country is a personal choice, no matter what the scenic or the Geocaching attractions. You know, just like snakes only juicier! For your enlightenment do note that a Mountain Lion track shows no claw impressions. Cats keep their claws withdrawn except when needed for action. After all, who wants a gritty entree? The last two sentences of that sign exactly describes the sensation I enjoyed when growled at by that Forest Service truck. So it goes, Sweet ol' Harmon SD Rowdies Note to Self: For a real fright try an unexpected encounter with Duncan! on some lonely trail. Edited April 20, 2012 by SD Rowdies Quote
+SD Rowdies Posted April 21, 2012 Posted April 21, 2012 (edited) My pillow whispered to me last night, said "Harmon ol' boy you are losing it. Your Geocaching-container inventory is down to two pieces. Duh!" Sometimes y' get lucky ... the "postman" cometh this morning. Two drive-by drops into my driveway newspaper-box boosted my inventory to ten pieces. Ten containers is exactly what I need for my next outing. How lucky am I? ... easy striking distance from the three-hundredth SD Rowdies hide. Delighted to see that the LSD Team filled in one of the untidy gaps of the Cuyamaca Campaign. Keep up the good work I say. Sweet ol' Harmon SD Rowdies Note to Self: Finds for seesies. Edited April 21, 2012 by SD Rowdies Quote

Anyhoo, comments are welcome... FlagMan, Even though I planned to close the loop that would include East Side Trail between East Mesa Parking and Sweetwater Parking and from there along the Harvey Moore to the shortcut to East Mesa Fire Road I now favor your proposal to drive a stake in the heart of the Cuyamaca Campaign and define it as you propose. I also agree to let those few old orphans in the East Mesa area rest in peace. They played no part in the campaign. Thing is that there are a few dedicated Geocachers that have not only worked very hard to move this zany campaign along at a goodly pace but are very nearly if not actually in position to qualify for the HOF as you propose it. It would be grand to see a few user-names on the HOF list from the outset. Also I propose that the two reviewers that supported this campaign without complaint and with dispatch should be inducted into the Cuyamaca HOF at the outset. It amazed me to see how fast a new set of hides could be reviewed and published, time and again. Bravo! For my part the pleasure has been in the adventure, the scenery, the hiking, the weather, and the companionship. My defining moment was standing at the Sweetwater stream crossing knowing that if I put a large number of hides on Saddleback Trail then the usual suspects would be tempted to pull off their boots, roll up their pants, and wade across. With that realization in mind there was no turning back ... neither streams, nor rain, nor snow, nor fallen trees could stop me until Middle Peak was conquered. Working out a procedure for placing so many hides was interesting as well. Using Google Earth map-pins and ruler tool to pre-plan hide locations and using Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, a camera, and a field journal for hints made it possible after each arduous hike to recall what the devil I had done along those many trails. Gosh knows if ever I'll make the HOF list ... so many hides left behind while placing I know not how many new hides. Each day now I'm receiving a cascade of emails and enjoying the log entries and photos that have been posted ever-so much. Isn't it grand to have such a fine collection of Geocachers in our county? Using Google Earth map-pins and ruler tool to pre-plan hide locations and using Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, a camera, and a field journal for hints made it possible after each arduous hike to recall what the devil I had done along those many trails. Gosh knows if ever I'll make the HOF list ... so many hides left behind while placing I know not how many new hides. Each day now I'm receiving a cascade of emails and enjoying the log entries and photos that have been posted ever-so much. Isn't it grand to have such a fine collection of Geocachers in our county? So it goes, Poor ol' Harmon SD Rowdies Note to Self: Yeah, and so far nobody has been eaten by a Mountain Lion. Note two Self: Why the devil didn't somebody stop me? Harmon, don't stop on account of me or anything I've said or done. The "Campaign" should continue for as long as you want to continue it. All of the Halls of Fame are works in progress, and caches keep getting added and deleted all the time. Just yesterday, three more were added to the list for Cuyamaca. And Duncan! has suggested that the ones north of Oakzanita on that Harvey Moore trail and some others near the lake really should be included at some point. But those ones should wait, I think, until the usual suspects who might be trying to qualify can complete the actual "Campaign." Thanks pal. I've got ten Geocache containers burning a hole in my backpack. After what that backpack went through I'd hate having to throw it away. Yes, I see a couple of rascals are placing new hides out on East Mesa. They shouldn't get me started ... I've been hearing Sunrise Highway calling to East Mesa. Bwah-hah-hah! +SD Rowdies Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 (edited) Stonewall Peak or Half Dome?!? If you look carefully, you will note the shirt is from Half Dome... Mus' be from a cell-phone camera. Is that you Tom? For a small fee I'll fix the original for you. Tough fix though ... it's a lot easier just to wipe the snot off of the lens before the shot. Edited April 23, 2012 by SD Rowdies Quote
+SD Rowdies Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 (edited) Hey look everybody! Jodi wrote "So I guess I will have to reach deep down in my heart and thank that Old Man Harmon for one of the best gifts he has given the local Geocachers ... the dirty dozen and the dozens more who will enjoy the renewed interest in this great mountain playground. Thank you Harmon!!!" I'm wondering, does it seem a bit, shall I say, qualified or what? Of course any praise from Jodi is always taken as a Heaven-sent blessing. +Let's Look Over Thayer Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 Hey look everybody! Jodi wrote "So I guess I will have to reach deep down in my heart and thank that Old Man Harmon for one of the best gifts he has given the local Geocachers ... the dirty dozen and the dozens more who will enjoy the renewed interest in this great mountain playground. Thank you Harmon!!!" I don't like it. Nope. I don't like this one little bit. I come here to be entertained by whatever trouble Harmon has managed to get hisself into and what do I find but some sort of mutual admiration society. I'm a startin' ta' think them Mayan calendar builders may have been right, after all. Quote
7rxc Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 I think Harmon is Stonewalling, at least the chap with the Half Dome T shirt is! Not that it matters at all, but I'm sort of cheery today, we finally have 70 degree sunny days for a while, the snow is melting well and best of all... all my friends back in Ontario and the Northeast USA are getting clobbered... teach them to snicker at me. But we can still get some more here until the end of May (hopefully that will end it). I've checked and we're losing 6 inches to a foot each day. Only a few more feet left in the hard to melt areas in town. Lots in the bush, even got a cache last week. Bye for now. Doug 7rxc in BC. Quote

Figured that I should build up a few sweety-points before I need 'em. Here, I'll share the photo with you butt for goodness sakes don't go telling Jodi about it. So how's that make y' feel ... all better? Poor ol' Harmon SD Rowdies Edited April 24, 2012 by SD Rowdies Quote

+SD Rowdies Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 (edited) It don't get no gooder than this ... Improved hint-technique by BlondHiLites. I ask y', does she look like a Geocacher? O please! ... read my mind. On the other hand ... What should you do for a DNF? A provisional replacement of course. Here's the funny part ... Duncan! DNFed his hiking stick later on. Worse yet, BlondHiLites DNFed Harmon on Black Oak Trail and she claims that there's no need to replace him. Meanwhile, back at Saddleback Trail ... Here's something unusual, a Squid crossing Sweetwater Creek. A Squid named Bonnie by the way. Hard to tell, is that a smile or a grimace? O, by th' way ... Denice of KWVERS! of course. What's a sweet little grandmother doing in a place like this? Ain't she th' sweetest thang? But then ... The 'S' Denise of BlondHiLites cheating and proud of it. Snappy dresser too. Manly-man crossing ... Chuck of 3CDs trying to miss the #*@&! rocks. Edited April 25, 2012 by SD Rowdies Quote
