What Program Do You Use To Create Cache

Recommended Posts

What program do you use to create cache pages. I know some of the computer brains use straight HTML. I am not that smart. What other programs do you use? Word? Publisher? Front Page?

I just created a detailed cache page in Publisher (first time) and now I can't seem to get it to transfer over to a cache page. Is there a special trick? I have several text boxes, pictures and an Excel puzzle. I need help fast. I have a time limit on getting this page up...by this Friday. Otherwise I will have to go my normal way.

HELP!!!!! :)

The tags you need shouldn't be too hard for a cache page.

Excellent Chart

Here is one list

Here is another list

Some are very easy, like <Center> for centering an image or a block of text or heading. All you have to do is use the "/" in front of the tag to close that formatting. So </Center> closes the centered portion.

Same goes for the <I> used for italic text or the <B> used for Bold text and <U> for underline.

<BR> gives you a line break, and <P> gives you a new paragraph.

The text boxes and the Excel puzzle present a problem because you will have to create tables for those, and that is a bit beyond my limited expertise. :)

To put in the pictures, all you have to do is use this code in front of its location:

<img src="http://www.yourISP.com/YourServerSpace/ImageName.jpg">

If you see another simple page you like, you can view the Source Code and copy and paste that into a new document and play with it to customize it for your needs. :)

What is the best way to import an Excel puzzle into HTML for a cache page? By puzzle I mean I have a 24x24 square made by setting the outside border. Then I have created a maze by turning borders on or off. I need this on my cache page. Any ideas on what to do?

Thanks :)

Okay, this is just a thought.

How about doing a Print Screen of the "maze" and then in your graphics program (I use Corel PhotoPaint), turn that into an image.

Resize it as necessary and upload it to the server.

Then just insert it like you would any other image or photo.

One way is to make a screenshot.

Another is to use the export function of Excel, but this may not work with all browsers and I saw many cases where the HTML-tabular looks totaly different then the "printout" of the Excel-table.

I would recomend to install a virtuall printer like "FreePDF XP" (or FreePDF in case you don't have Windows XP) so that you can print your document (not only from Excel) into a PDF-document. Then you have to put this file somewhere from where people can download it. Works fine with our riddles.

I use Bon's Guide and do it by hand.

Please be very picky about what programs you use to write it for you. Word is one that will add in TONS of extra garbage that you don't need. All you're doing is adding a few links or pictures, bolding/underlinging, change of text font and color. This may not be that noticable on your home computer, but try loading the page into a pda and it will gag.

If you are installing a maze I would recommend a graphic.

My reasons for this

1. With a myriad of operating systems and browsers your finally crafted maze may not display right on a browser.

2. Different operating systems use different screen sizes so again your maze may not be proportioned correctly.

3. In some browsers you need to fill the cells with something to make them hold their size so you need to upload a graphic anyway.

4. A two color tiff would be very small indeed. If you need the file made send me the Excel sheet and I will make the graphic for you.

I went home last night and used Front Page to create my latest cache and everything worked out fine. The program puts in some extra tags but you can delete them if you want. Thanks for giving me the idea to copy the maze into another program and save it as a jpg file. I copied the Excel sheet into Print Master and then saved it as a jpg file and uploaded that into my Front Page file and everything looks great. I should have it posted by tomorrow.

Thanks again for all of your ideas.

Please pardon the link with embedded links, but I've got to get going to another commitment. In addition to the tips provided by others above, the following has even more specific step by step instructions: HTML & Graphics on Cache Pages

Because GC.com has an imposed style on its webpage you can not get to fancy with your HTML as you do not have FULL control over the page so just a few simple commnads is alls you really need. If you use WORD to make a page then GC.com style will overwrite much of it so it is better to just know a few simple commands you can use to create the page in a text editor and then cut and paste in the description boxes. Do a VIEW SOURCE to look at a few pages to see waht I am talking about.

cheers
