+Joypa
Recently, one of my caches was trashed. Teeth marks on everything. Stuffed ripped to shreds. Many cache items missing. At first I was angry. I thought some animal with opposable thumbs went nuts on my cache. But after thinking about it, it might have been a coyote or a dog. Last entry in the log, which I found, was "left two sticks of..." (illegible). Anyone out there have experience with this sort of thing? What would cause a dog to go Section 8 on my cache? Food? Why would a dog tear up the cache note? Quote Link to comment
Agent N.
maybe it was a puppy? they like to rip up everything what size were the marks? Quote Link to comment
+Joypa
maybe it was a puppy? they like to rip up everything what size were the marks? Could be a puppy. How did it get the cache open? Tupperware container. Did it smell food? Quote Link to comment
+1setter
That illegible word was probably 'beef jerky'. Quote Link to comment
+Joypa
Beef jerky. Of course! That's it! What idiot would leave beef jerky in a cache? Quote Link to comment
Agent N.
Beef Jerky? some people! that just spoils all the fun Quote Link to comment
+Joypa
Well, you know, I've...(sob)... moved on. I guess I'll never know who or what trashed my cache. Quote Link to comment
+CompuCash
Beef jerky. Of course! That's it! What idiot would leave beef jerky in a cache? I think you answered your own question! Quote Link to comment
+Joypa
Guess I did... but I know the geocacher that did it and I'm reluctant to get into this with them so... Quote Link to comment
+Divine
I guess one of my micro containers tasted good for some small rodent: Quote Link to comment
kayaker22589
Maybe a racoon, or a fox, or possibly even a possum. Quote Link to comment
+SixDogTeam
Sounds like a coon had lunch on your tab. If a geocacher left food in your cache, it is either deliberate sabotage or he doesn't get it. If he doesn't get it, he needs to be set straight... Quote Link to comment
+BlueDeuce
If you really want to know, go stand at the cache site with some beef jerky. Quote Link to comment
+2qwerqE
I was recently FTF on a new cache that used a peanut butter jar for the cache container. I guess they didn't bother to clean it out too well because it was attacked and destroyed before it's first find. That peanut butter is a mighty strong animal magnet! I found the container out in the open, thoroughly gnawed upon and contents scattered. Still, I logged the find and put it back where it looked to belong. The cache owner promptly replaced it with an ammo can. Moral of the story: Don't use former food containers for a cache box. Quote Link to comment
Pantalaimon
Moral of the story: Don't use former food containers for a cache box. I wouldn't use current ones either. Quote Link to comment
+rjb43nh
I'd say some animals like yogurt too. Check out this photo of a cache from Maine that I found. The contents were scattered and the log book was mush. yogurt container Quote Link to comment
+avroair
Probably a hungry geocacher...! They have been known to do strange things Quote Link to comment
+MarcB
It wasn't an ammo box was it? MarcB Quote Link to comment
+DadONine
Just recently I had a 35mm film canister that repeatedly got misplaced and chewed on by something, probably a coon. I replaced it with a waterproof match holder with a screw-on lid. No problems since then. DadONine Quote Link to comment
