CacheNCarryMA
I just bought a Pelican micro case (model 1050) from REI for use as an underwater cache. I'm planning to place it on a tidal flat in Cape Cod bay once summer gears up -- tether it to a chuck of cinder block or hunk of iron. It will float in 3 or 4 feet of water half the day; dry or in inches of water the rest of the time. Has anyone ever used one of these boxes (caching or otherwise)? Any opinions? Quote Link to comment
+cache_us_if_you_can
Looks cool, but how well will it hold up in direct sunlight for long periods of time? Quote Link to comment
+cactus8
I've used Pelican brand waterproof boxes for many years on my boat and they work great. If the model you plan to use has a rubber o ring seal make sure it doesn't get pinched and a very small amount of vaseline makes for a very watertight seal. Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
They are great boxes, but a bit expensive for a cache container. Not sure how they'd hold up to extended exposure in salt water though. I'd use a log made out of waterproof paper like National Geographic Adventure Paper just in case. +JeepCachr
Any thing underwater long enough will leak. All it takes is one careless person to not shut it right or to get something stuck in the seal and ruin it. Quote Link to comment

+Prairie Dog
I purchased an Otter Boxwhich is similar to a Pelican case. I think I paid about $10.00 for it. It's big enough to hold only a small log book. It's quite a nice little container and I'm worried it will get muggled or come up missing. Quote Link to comment
+Criminal
This container might be more waterproof, it's bear proof anyway... Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
I plan on using the Rite In Rain pad I got from this promotional offer Rite in the Rain is not waterproof. It will eventually desintigrate like regular paper when soaked for extended periods. Edited April 5, 2004 by briansnat Quote Link to comment
+hikemeister
I used that same box for a cache that was about 8 ft underwater. The contents remained dry for the two weeks that the cache lasted. Unfortunately I underestimated current velocity, and when a storm / high flow situation occurred, the cache was lost. Hope your works well. Use heavy blocks! Quote Link to comment

Using a nice container like that, I would be a lot more worried about sticky fingers than I would about the forces of mother nature! All the same, good luck! Quote Link to comment
