Waypointd
Hey everyone. I just today got introduced to geocaching. Its sooooo coool!!!!!!!!! My question is that when you come to a cache that is not themed, what kind of or what expense of item(s) should you leave in it? Have you ever found anything really nice? Thanks Quote Link to comment
+Firehouse16
Well I guess always there's the logbook and writing utensil. After that it's whatever you want. I try and leavce some cool stuff. I've visited enough caches that have nothing but junk in them to make it depressing. Here's everything I've left, I spend a few dollars trying to buy some cool things, some things I haven't released yet: 4 bottles Tabasco sauce Little rapper figurine Key ring bottle opener Heart charm gold necklace Paul Stanley Signature Guitar Pick Petrified rock Light Stick Fire Truck Toy Lilo Figurine Boy Scout Pin "Jesus is Lord" Coin - 2 Skull Slimes - 4 Halloween PEZ Dispensers - Vampire Blood and Fang Set - Flourescent Hair Coloring - 3 Skull Shot Glasses - Pumpkin Carving Set w/Templates - Space Ace Travel Bug X-men DVD Kiss - "You Wanted The Best, You Got The Best" CD Quasar Pen Radio Tropicana Casino Playing Cards Stitch as Elvis figurine Batman Figurine Simi Alarm Clock Slacktone sticker IAFF fire dept. sticker Kiss sweepstakes card Hawaiian key chain Golf ball Mild to Wild business card Wienerschnitzel hot dog thingy Dick Dale guitar pic Toyota 2002 championship racing pin fishPOET Geo Token Mild to Wild Travel Bug 1. 2003 Penny - for good luck 2. +EraSeek
A basic cache is a box and a logbook. Beyond that is up to you. Don't leave food, adult material, or blatant promotional items. Go for unique rather than expensive. Most caches end up with mostly used junk (which is really a shame) so try to improve a cache if you can. Most of the time I don't trade at all, just log the find. The only thing I really go for is pins and travel bugs, but am quite happy with just a logsheet. The best solution is to come up with your own unique signature item that you leave in every cache. +T10X
I like to go to any of the "Dollar" stores to find trading stuff, Play-Doh, toys, modeling clay, gadgets, anything I find interesting or kids would like. I am working on a signature item, a laser cut token with my avatar or something on it. Quote Link to comment

+Etrex Pirate
I have found about 27 caches so far and am having fun. I have placed many of the same things as listed above and like to leave fun things or at least trade up. (See the trade up post in the general forum). I liked seeing what others were placing like GEO Coins and tokens. Being my nick is Etrex Pirate I decided to go with the theme and created these this weekend. Whatever you choose please don't be too cheap and place broken toys or totally useless items that I have seen in many of the caches I have seen so far. It takes much of the fun out of the hunt. If you don't have anything worth leaving take nothing and leave nothing. Just sign the log book and move along. Happy Caching. +Etrex Pirate
Good catch. It's also it's a good thing it's only a prototype. I was about to make the rest of them today. I'm the good kind of pirate... if there is such a thing Quote Link to comment
allanorn
I wouldn't put in anything too valuable unless you're setting up your own cache and want to reward the first finder. Most of the stuff I trade is in the $1-2 range but oftentimes I just sign the log and take/leave nothing. I am considering leaving either steel pennies or half-dollars as signature items. I'm more concerned with the steel pennies since they could rust, but they're cheaper than half-dollars. What's everyone's take on it? Quote Link to comment
+Aggroman
I guess diamonds are out of the question. Being a photographer, I usually put a new roll of film in. They seem to go real quick. I like the idea of leaving coins. I've been to only 2 water-logged caches, and it looked like it was because of bad judgement in containers. If you picked good solid containers to put them in, rust won't be a problem. I saw someone left a 1943 silver nickel in one. When I got there that same day it was left, the cacher an hour before me grabbed it. Quote Link to comment

+Jeeters
I am considering leaving either steel pennies or half-dollars as signature items. I'm more concerned with the steel pennies since they could rust, but they're cheaper than half-dollars. What's everyone's take on it? I'd think that would be a really nice find. As for rust, how about just putting them into a ziplock? (I'd think a lot of cached items would fair better if they were ziplocked instead of tossed lose into the containers). You could probably get small 2" or 3" zipbags at a hobby shop if you don't want to put a single little penny in a big regular sized bag. Quote Link to comment
Hisdamsel
I personally am making a habit of leaving all my stuff in zip lock baggies.. just keeps it nicer.. Quote Link to comment
moonpup
Well I'm about ready to place my first cache. I'm using an ammo can with a good seal, and being a computer geek (Linux user), I will put linux cd's in it amongst other techie goodies peace out... Quote Link to comment
+High Desert Fish
Remember not to put knives or the like in. I have put marbles in and they go fast. I have done that for micro cache film cans. Caribeeners go well. Small bouncing balls like from a gumball machine seem to be liked. Also Foreign coins are good and they do not have to be expensive they are just exotic. I think it is good to place nice things in the cache, but you may want to hold back so you can put more in later. I like the survival gear and batteries some people place in the cache. +Xanxer82
This thread had some good ideas. I just put together some caches that I plan on putting out soon and the list helped a bit. Quote Link to comment
+thetwizz
Around here people like to leave scratch off lottery tickets. Those are always fun to find and add a little extra excitement when you crack open that cache! Quote Link to comment
+HerefordAnn
Thanks, this has helped me as well as I have been wondering what to put in caches when I eventually find this type. Quote Link to comment
