+qhtxvckfkfl
I just got a new GPS and I put in the batteries and it still says "wait...locating satellites..." How long does this take? It's taken over 5 minutes (the owner's manual says 5 minutes...) should I go outside? I'm inside right now. Quote Link to comment
+TeamK-9
Probably go outside. But right now it's probably "initializing" so it will take longer than normal... Quote Link to comment

+Doc-Dean
Which one did you get? Quote Link to comment
DiverMan
By the description of the time, it sounds like a Garmin model. Quote Link to comment
+Sparky-Watts
Typically for the first use and initialization, leave it with a clear view of the sky for 15 to 20 minutes. After the first time, around 3-5 minutes is enough to get a good lock. Quote Link to comment
+carleenp
Definitely go outside. Unless you are right by a window, many GPS receivers won't work well inside. Quote Link to comment
the 5 little bears
ya mine wont get a lock indoors at all. Quote Link to comment
+qhtxvckfkfl
E Trex Vista 24MB I think it got a reading but it was way off...I was INSIDE Quote Link to comment
+Alphatexana
Be sure to post and tell us all how your first cache experience turns out. Quote Link to comment
+pnew
better yet make a couple threads out of it and post it right here. You could have chapters 1 through 5 from when you got off your computer to go find it to when you hit the enter button to post your log. Man, find a couple caches and you could write a book series about this! Quote Link to comment
+Imajika
LOL Pnew! Seriously Pirate, I would suggest reading your manual thoroughly. Go to the Garmin web site and get any updates for your GPS you need, read the FAQ here at the gc.com website about finding your first cache, get EasyGPS, download some waypoints and hit the road. Good luck on your first find! Quote Link to comment
warrior41882
I have a Magellan Sportrac map. I get 4-6 satalites locked on in less than a min. Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
The first time you turn it on, it will take a while. When I got my Vista I tried to get a lock by turning it on in my driveway. After 15 minues, nothing. So I drove over to a nearby baseball field and laid the unit down on the pitching rubber. It took about 10 minutes, but I finally got a lock. Now it just takes a minute or so to get a lock....unless I've travelled a long way since the unit was last turned on. Then it can take as many as 4-5 minutes. Now, I can get even a lock indoors with my Vista on ocassion...if the blinds are open. Edited January 14, 2004 by briansnat Quote Link to comment
+Halden
By the description of the time, it sounds like a Garmin model. How could you tell it was vastly superior by that tiny description? Quote Link to comment
