+wray_clan Posted December 13, 2003 Posted December 13, 2003 my question: I go to the "Hide and Seek a Cache" page and type in my zipcode (99999) to see if there's any new hides, right? So the list comes up, and the first geocache says 0.3 miles from 99999. What is this 99999? Is it an actual point, if so, where is it? (city hall, etc) If you don't understand, please say so.
Jeremy Posted December 13, 2003 Posted December 13, 2003 I believe it is the population center for that particular zipcode. Our database contains zip+4 though I ignore the +4 part, so it grabs whatever the first zipcode in the database is. That's US only. I don't know how the other postal codes are derived.
+Criminal Posted December 13, 2003 Posted December 13, 2003 Can you add back the +4? Might make it more accurate over here at 98335
+Lazyboy & Mitey Mite Posted December 13, 2003 Posted December 13, 2003 It always works best if you enter your actual home coordinates into your "My Cache Page" or profile, or wherever you do that stuff.
+geoark1 Posted December 13, 2003 Posted December 13, 2003 I have been told that the zip code is the actual POST OFFICE location I don know if that is true or not but it seems to be accurate where we live.
+Sparky-Watts Posted December 13, 2003 Posted December 13, 2003 Well, since my "population center" is only about a half mile by a half mile, I generally don't have a problem with it, especially since the nearest cache (besides mine) is around 15 miles away
+Team GPSaxophone Posted December 13, 2003 Posted December 13, 2003 I think population center works out right for the zip codes, however my post office is close to that spot anyway. My GPS, however, shows the center of Albuquerque on the middle of I-25 about 2 miles NE of downtown. Strange...
+Sparky-Watts Posted December 13, 2003 Posted December 13, 2003 . My GPS, however, shows the center of Albuquerque on the middle of I-25 about 2 miles NE of downtown. Strange... Now, just watch out for traffic when you confirm that location!
+Stunod Posted December 13, 2003 Posted December 13, 2003 I have been told that the zip code is the actual POST OFFICE location I don know if that is true or not but it seems to be accurate where we live. Not true for my zip or some near it. The centroid of the population or the land area seems right. If you really want to know where that point is, do a zip code search, and then click on the MAP IT link near the top of the page. The + on the map will be at the center of the search.
+Og's outfit Posted January 23, 2004 Posted January 23, 2004 Enumclaw WA's zip is terribly off. I really don't mind, but it would definitely cause problems for out-of-towners searching for Enumclaw's closest caches. The cache closest to our post office doesn't show up on a 98022 search until page 3. For some reason Crystal Mountain is where our zip coordinates are. If you have some spare time, map 98022 and see what you get. It's kind of funny, in a barren mountain map way. Og

Maybe I should just stop posting. I know, I know, there are many others who feel the same way. Sorry, couldn't resist.
+programmer64 Posted January 23, 2004 Posted January 23, 2004 Here in Trainer Pa, 19061 the post office covers 4 different towns,we each have that plus 4 thing but who uses that? anyway the post office is in Linwood,Pa and that is where the zipcode search centers from.
+Sparky-Watts Posted January 24, 2004 Posted January 24, 2004 To self moderate myself, and make up for my off-topic reply, I vow to go get a reading at our post office, then compare that with the coords given for 67108 to see where they connect. That is the geo-pennance I have assigned myself. How hard can it be? I'm .2 miles from the post office, which is .25 miles from the edge of town, in any direction you go.
+Og's outfit Posted January 24, 2004 Posted January 24, 2004 (edited) I dug up this post so I wouldn't have to start a new one. (maybe I should have.) Would it be a hard thing to change our zip coordinates? Or at least assign the real Enumclaw's +4? Og Edited January 24, 2004 by Og's outfit
