South_Cache
I think my cache is lost in the swamp. The water is too deep for knee boots. Do AMMO Cans float when sealed? Do they leak a little and eventually sink? Capn Skully Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
They float, pretty much indefinitely...unless there is enough weight inside to sink it. A government that is big enough to give you all you want is big enough to take it all away. -Barry Goldwater Quote Link to comment
+bigredmed
Tried to sink one into the Elkhorn river near here. Wouldn't get close, even with a large rock inside. Thought it was due to the Elkhorn River, guess its mostly the ammo can. By appointment to the Court of HRM Queen Mikki I. Quote Link to comment
+rayt333
Unless the can had a hole in it or was damaged or missing the seal around the lid then it is watertight and would float unless it had too much weight in it. Normal caching items would not weigh enough to sink it, so if it was in an area that is now flooded then I would guess it has floated away. It is a good idea to tie a small rope to ammo cans placed in an area where it may possibly flood and tie to a fixed object like a tree. Quote Link to comment
+Sissy-n-CR
Most definitely they float. We were picking our way through some water that was over our boots if we stepped in, but were able to get most of the way on logs, roots, and stuff. But there were a couple of places we couldn't step far enough so we used a regular ammo can as a stepping stone! It was packed full of our cache repair items. Once we stepped on it, it sunk into the mud. Then we pryed it out of the mud with our walking stick and it floated. We could then use the walking stick to push it over to us. So, unless it was inside a log or something it's floating. CR Quote Link to comment
+Matt1344
There's a sunken ammo box cache near me which I hope to attempt soon. Here's a link Quote Link to comment
+Don&Betty
I hope to do an underwater cache sometime. I've calculated that it will take 22 pounds net wet weight to sink a 50-cal ammo can. It'll probably take about six bricks strapped outside to do it. Quote Link to comment
+Renegade Knight
How about load that puppy up with lead. You could melt it, pour it in and 22lbs of lead would leave you some room for items. Wherever you go there you are. Quote Link to comment
+evergreenhiker!
I don't think lead is such a good idea...yes, it would work, but it's toxic if it leaches out. Quote Link to comment
South_Cache
One of my caches has gone missing. Since the water is over knee deep and doesn't flow it should be very near by. I have searched in the water where I could reach but no luck. I have a funny feeling the cache has been stolen. Capn Skully Quote Link to comment
+Sissy-n-CR
Find a jonboat and cruise around out there a little. The slightest of breezes will push it around until it gets hung up somewhere. Good luck! CR Quote Link to comment

Gee...wonder how we're going to get all the lead off-planet. Scoop up all the lead mines and rocket them into the sun? George Quote Link to comment
