McLae
I know there is a link on the net that will convert street addresses to GPS coordinates. I just don't have the link yet. Anyone know what the link(s) is(are)? I am going on a business trip and would like to avoid getting lost in L.A.! Thanks for any help, McLae Quote Link to comment
umc
cool, I didn't know anything like that existed. +Marky
I can enter street addresses into my Sportrak (or Meridian) and it will give me a waypoint. I think you need the detailed maps to do this. --Marky "All of us get lost in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer with a backlit GPSr" Quote Link to comment
+SeaTrout
Geocode Seatrout We are in it 'for the hunt'. We are much more interested in finding the cache container than its contents. Quote Link to comment
+sparklehorse
FYI, the geocode.com coords are NAD-27. Don't forget to switch your GPSr to that datum before entering coords from that site. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- "I know how hard it is to put food on your family."?George "dubya" Bush, 2000 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quote Link to comment

+Jennifer&Dean
Unless you are certain where the map you are using is coming from, the addressing is likely to be close, but not perfect. US Tiger files tend to round addresses to 100, so if you have a block with addresses between 201 and 231, in some files that block will show up as 201 to 299. And the direction that addresses run on some long courts may be reversed or switched from the main intersection to the end of the court. (hard to explain w/out diagram) I work with maps everyday to create decent maps that can route for our system. Our biggest problems are the rounding up of addresses and the lack of buffering to account for large complexes. Our system places addresses a minimum of 50 feet apart, and when a street segment is rounded up, the address shows up a lot closer to an intersection than it really is. Always ask yourself "Where did XXX Company get the map I am using, and did they have some poor schmuck check every street for accurate address info?" Then do a Mapquest search for your home address.... The Geocode site places my home address .20 of a mile from it's real location...it's not bad and is one of the better ones I've used. -Jennifer Nothing is really work unless you would rather be doing something else. +SeaTrout
You can enter addresses in geocode for free or I would not have posted the link. Seatrout We are in it 'for the hunt'. We are much more interested in finding the cache container than its contents. Quote Link to comment

The Artful Dodger
I find Maporama.com as a very good source. I have used it for the USA as well as Australia, New Zealand and Britain. Quote Link to comment
+Markwell
It's actually the first question in my Update to the FAQ, which is linked on one of the first two message in Getting Started. I haven't tried maptech yet. If it works easily, I'll add it to the FAQ. Markwell Chicago Geocaching Quote Link to comment
