  1. I presently have Mapsource Metroguide USA which I use with my eMap. I'm planning to do a little camping this summer and some recreational hiking. Is it worth getting Mapsource Topo? How much more detail on off road areas does it have? Thanks for any insights.
  2. Use it quite a bit .. very nice program
  3. How about this link? (I haven't really used this yet) http://gps.algebra.com/
  4. I'll second what others have stated: Two internet vendors whom I've had very good success with are www.gpscity.com and www.tvnav.com. Both have exhibited good service and courteous employees. I believe such attributes are worth a few dollars more and such vendors should be rewarded (end of mini-rant).
  5. I would never buy an Audiovox product. They seem to use low quality parts and their product packaging has always seemed somewhat cheesy. Back when I was involved in FRS/GMRS radio forums a common complaint was that the GMRS radios that they sold had very poor range compared to other brands (measured Effective Radiated Power was very low). Another complaint was that the fact that although one needs a license to transmit on GMRS, Audiovox would only mention this in very small print (if at all). I remember looking at one of their quality shrink wrapped products off the rack at WalMart and it would have been very easy to overlook the FCC requirement statement.
  6. I just got a eMap and was curious as to the various bike mounts available (I have a Bridgestone MTB). I know Garmin makes a unit specifically for the eMap (any feedback from those who own this?) but was wondering if there are any good "generic" mounts also available.
  7. I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet: "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" (U2)
  8. You shouldn't have any trouble uploading them to your Legend; I've done it pretty easily with my eMap. Although I don't know the Legend protocols I imagine to navigate to one of them all you will then need to do is pick one and do a GoTo command.
  9. Well, Ms. Claus did the right thing and gave me an eMap for Christmas. It locked on quickly and stayed locked on even in the house (a pleasant surprise). Except........the screen was barely readable. I needed a magnifying glass to see any detail. What a bummer. Decided to check the contrast setting. Contrast was set to almost all the way "down". Set it to a shade past medium and everything is now very readable. Have other Garmin owners noticed the same when they initally got their units? If I wouldn't have RTFM, I probably would have thought about returning the unit. BTW, these GPS thingys are incredible.
  10. It seemed like I was flying by everyone on the road - even when I am going "only" 72 in a 65 (I know - it's above the speed limit....). When I had to rent a car it subjectively seemed like I was going slower at the same speedometer reading. When Santa brought me my GPS it showed that at speedometer reading of 72 I was actually going 77 mph. I've been REAL lucky..... What an eye-opener.
  11. Garmin eMap MetroGuide USA 8 MB Data Card Car Mount Beanbag Mount (for wife's car) Time to party!
  12. Any schools/community colleges have courses (or extension courses) on navigation and/or GPS use? Perhaps they would appreciate a donation. Maybe even a high school could use it to help teach any electronic courses.

    Iowans?

Raised in Des Moines (Urbandale) and lived there and Iowa City for 34 years. Wife is from Waterloo and Iowa City. My Grandfather was mayor of Washington, Iowa and my wife's Grandfather was mayor of Rockford, Iowa (both a while ago). Even though I no longer live there I'm definitely an Iowan at heart (anyone feel like eating a Maid Rite?). Stumbled upon geocaching while surfing around. Haven't done any searches yet (waiting for Santa to bring me my toy) but plan on diving right in after Christmas.
  15. This is a slightly off topic - but I'm on many forums (HDTV, Palm, DVD, etc.) but this is one of the friendlinest and most informative forums I've been in. I can name many members who have been influential for me and to whom I'm indebted for many insights. Now if only Christmas will get here so I can start playing with my toy! Aaargh!
  16. As God is my witness I thought turkeys could fly.
  17. A cautionary note (see update description on Garmin site) "...Updated the version of the MPS file format to 1.04. Note that MPS files saved using 4.10 are not backward compatible with previous versions of MapSource. ..."
  18. Hey kids - I noted today that there is a new MapSource update posted on the Garmin website. http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/download.html The version is 4.10 and the date of the revision is 12/13/02.
  19. (I’m really a newbie to this site so forgive me if this is covered somewhere else) Does anyone know the current northern-most cache in the U.S.? I used to live in Kotzebue, Alaska (66° 54.049 N; 162° 33.512 W) and there would have been some really sweet areas to place caches in up there. I note that’s there’s no caches up there now (also none close to Barrow – now that would be WAY north).
  20. I'm thinking seriously of starting the sport of geocaching and some of these replies have made up my mind for me. Any sport who has FT addicts must be all right! (Actually, this topic has been very helpful also in mor mundane ways) "Rocky Rococo, at your cervix"
  21. victorymike- that's encouraging regarding the rain/moisture resistance of the eMap. It's also very encouraging regarding your geocaching experiences with the unit. I primarily asked Santa (actually Mrs. Santa) for an eMap for it's mapping features and was wondering if I needed more of an "hiking" unit for geocaching. I plan to try geocaching after Christmas (and maybe when the weather warms a bit). Thanks again.
  22. I'm getting an eMap for Christmas and was wanting to get a waterproof case for it. I've been looking at Aquapak. Anyone have any experience with these? If so, what size would work best for an eMap? (It looks like it would fit in the small size). I'm interested in the Aquapak due to its' "see through" design and the need to protect the eMap (which is only IPX2 rated). Any other suggestions would be appreciated (I guess I could use a ziplock baggie but I wanted something a little more elegant). Thanks
  23. I've seen some aftermarket cards at www.gpsmemory.com I have absolutely no experience with this company so I can't comment on them.
  24. This is a question for those of you who have Palm and GPS software on the same PC. I'm getting ready to receive my first GPS for Christmas and am going to install a couple of GPS programs (Metroguide, EasyGPS) on my PC. I also have installed Sony's version of Palm Desktop to communicate with my wife's Clie and my Palm IIIc (which uses a serial-USB adapter). I'm a little leery of installing the GPS software due to Com port horror stories I've been seeing. In Device Manager my Com Port settings show "Communications Port (com 1)" and PalmConnect USB Port (com 6)" It appears to me that Com 1 is available. Isn't this the port that many GPS's use? Would you advise disabling HotSync Manager during installation? Any advice/precautions from anyone is most appreciated. I don't want to screw up the Palm connection or my wife would not be happy with my new toy .
