I have something very similar to this - I think it was called 'gamefinder' or something like this. I found it was only accurate for detecting heat sources when there was an extreme temperature difference - i.e. if it were 20F outside, it could locate 98.6F okay. But on normal spring or summer days, it was pretty much useless. I got it for tracking downed deer during bow season and it wouldn't even detect another human 10 feet away in warm Mississippi fall weather. I would imagine there in Texas it would produce similar results. And yes, this one promised 'no false readings' too. On the plus side, it came in handy one cold January night (about 12F) when the neighbors Black Angus cattle got out. That heat sensor pegged every one of 'em in the pitch dark!

Ever notice everybody is willing to give THEIR 2 cents worth but only offer a penny for YOUR thoughts?

I have a single-eyepiece nightscope with an infrared painter, and it is very interesting. Being an amateur astronomer, I find that I like looking at the stars with it. I think it gets down to the 12th magnatude in the light polluted Atlanta night sky. Night vision is very wild! I need to take it once caching at night...

I had a night vision monocular from Night Owl Optics (the "Night Owl Night Odyssey (NONO3)"). It was not at all useful, and I sent it back. I imagine some of the others are better, but that one... I could actually see better without it.

Which one do you have?

It is nice to have the Infrared painter because it throws a beam out that paints object and increases illumination up to about 200 yards away or so. It just depends on how dark it is and how clear the area is between you and the object. You can litterally see in absolute total darkness. It has 3.1x magnification.

You should have looked up at the stars with it, it is awesome. I have not gone camping overnight in the wilderness with it yet, and it will be interesting to see what lurks in the shadows. It weighs about one pound.

Schedule a get toghether for the Geocachers in your area. Have the people hide the caches and put those little hand warmers or glow sticks in them. Then break for dinner, by the time dinner is finished, it will be dark and you can search for them with your device or the glow-sticks. Be a great night of geocaching fun!

I just can't think of a geocaching application for it. Maybe there isn't one, but I still think it's cool!
