+RobRee
protect your GPS'r -- they are NOT waterproof!!! i know the whole issue has been addressed before, but i find it to be an important one. use a waterproof bag designed for GPS'rs. they will save your arse. i dunked my sportrak in the delaware river and killed it. magellan replaced it due to some stress cracks in it. here is the type bags we use for gpsr and maps. robbie A family that Geocaches together... eventually gets wet. required reading My first bible Great Orienteering Site! Bender
My sportrak map was under water for more than a minute when I tumped over in my kayak. No problems whatsoever. That was almost a month ago. Bender Searching, for the lost Xanadu Quote Link to comment
+NimravusHSSR
Sorry to hear that. I've dunked and wet my Etrex dozens of times and it still works great. No water leakage problems. The etrex is rated ipx-7 or 30 minute submersion so I'm not worried about the occasional river dunks I give it. Maybe you should get a waterproof GPSr if your going to use it near water? Alphawolf
I know this will sound somewhat stupid, but when I got my Garmin V 2 years ago, I sorta tested the waterproofness of it in the kitchen sink. Yup....just dunked it for a little bit! No problems at all! I wasn't too worried, 'cause I sell these things and a replacement wouldn't have been any problem, so I just figured..."What the heck!", and did it. "Never take a sunset for granted. +StarQ
I recently used my Magellan Meridian Platinum on a motorcycle trip. Hours and hours of driving in the rain and it never stopped working. No problems with the display either. Quote Link to comment
+TotemLake
I've walked in the rain many miles with mine with no problems. Even took an accidental dunking in a river with it. It was the first device in and the last device out. That was in February and still no ill effects. Cheers! TL Quote Link to comment
+ZachMJ2345
Yeah... GPSrs tend to be pretty resilient little little creatures. I'd have to say anytime you dunk it and it comes up not working, it was either a fluke or it already had some damage that allowed the water to harm it. Needless to say... when you pay over a hundred bucks for something, you should never be entirely careless with it. Now... if you happen to cache with a "Palm" handheld unit... they aren't quite as good in water. But like I said... be careful with anything you pay good money for... -Zach -Team Zen- Quote Link to comment
tyerod
Dunked my Platinum into a hot tub and grabbed it out quick. Once I realized it floated I let it soak for about a minute or so. Maybe the gin was affecting my judgement but I haven't had any problems with it since. Quote Link to comment
dzavetsky
I'd say that the "stress cracks" had something to do with the water getting in... My Garmin V is supposed to be waterproof to one meter for 30 minutes....I hope so, cause it will see a lot of motorcycle use in wet weather....that is if I can get it to quit shutting down automatically when on battery power.... <grin> I guess a good question is, though, when the power plug is plugged into the V, is it still water resistant?? +Rubberhead
I took a late January, saltwater swim while duck hunting. I had my eTrex Mariner in my pocket. I dumped the water out of the battery compartment and it continued to work the reset of the day. When I got home I cleaned it good with freshwater and sprayed a little wd-40 on the battery contacts. The Mariner is still working just fine. Ducks - Flying, great tasting, geocaches of meat Quote Link to comment
+Team Lawrence
I have soaked my V quite completely twice and it suffered no ill effects. You can read the details of my most recent experiment here. The power plug has no effect on its water tight status. The rubber plug doesn't seal the port from water anyhow. Quote Link to comment
greatwhite6
I had my Meridian out in my boat coming back from the Channel Islands. Seas kicked up and the meridian bounced into the hull of boat. It was completely submerging in saltwater for over an hour and it's never given me a problem. I thought the seals looked pretty lame at first but I'm sold now. They are waterproof..
