  1. This hit the nail on the head. The Backpacker content is from a column called "Social Climer" The person who writes the article is more intrested in looking cool on the trail in substandard gear than being comfortable in gear that works. Probably more correct, he is intrested in looking cool at the mall trying to look like someone who actually goes outdoors. The most he gets out is walking from Starbucks to his SUV with his double grande mochafrapchino with a double shot of whatever. I read it just to get a chuckle at his stupidity for the month. If you have read this column before there is no way you would take him seriously.
  2. The REI garage sale is to unload returned, and sometimes defective, items. I would believe the set was priced with the knowledge that the disc was missing. You got what you paid for. They are pretty good about letting you inspect these items before you buy.
  3. I've decided its been to long since I cached. I think I'll dust off the GPS and head out tommorow(thats actually today for all you non-nightshifters). So if its been to long since you last went hunting, join me in getting back out there.
  4. Thats not a happy story. I keep hoping to find a big bag of cash out in the woods.
  5. Call the company that shipped it. Indicate that you have not recieved the package. If they are unwilling to take the matter to UPS, file a dispute with your credit card company. Sooner or later UPS will need to show that you actually signed for it. Usually once they see the driver signed off on it, it should be taken care of.
  6. A note in the log: TNLN.....but I'm rich, rich I tell ya....HA HA HA HA.....
  7. It had my intrest until the Sprint PCS part....Never never never again. NEVER!
  8. Cover that label with some clear packing tape and you increase the waterproofness of the label and the longevity of the canister.
  9. I'm 6'5" 225lbs. Columbia makes some very nice outdoor gear in tall sizes. Most of my snowboarding/winter gear is Columbia. As for boots I fall in the almost normal size 13. I have been sticking with Carolina boots for a while now. As for daypacks, lose the waist strap and you'll be fine. Its not needed for a daypack anyway. Or go with a good lumbar pack if you need something hugging your waist. I drive a Ford Ranger extended cab with no problems, just lean the seat back a little so my head fits but thats the way I drive anyways. As for rain gear go for a poncho style piece of gear.
  10. An empty flask! Now thats just one cruel joke.
  11. The last time I was out hunting cache I spyed what must be the hiding spot. A knot hole in a tree just about eye level. I was just about to plunge my hand in the hole when I figured it might be a good idea to look in the hole first. I'm glad I did cause there was one pissed off looking possium staring back at me. Now I've never had an angry possium bite me hand before and I don't really want to change that fact.
  12. I've cached a few logs. Just make sure that isn't posion ivy!! As far as recycling coffee, when ma nature calls ya have to answer.

When there is a difference the salt shaker will have more holes. People tend to dust more salt on their food than pepper therfore more holes takes less time to turn that bacon white. A pepper mill is the only way to go if you like a lot of pepper.
  14. Home Depot, or similar store, carries the snap lids that aren't un-godly hard to remove. You can pick up the buckets there also. Usually they are pretty dirt cheap. I use these for my camping equipment and they can be used as chairs also.
  15. This is just me ranting about my lazyness(?). I will usually print out a handful of cache logs at work when I am getting the itch for some caching. It may be a day or a few weeks before I actually get out to hunt for the caches. Today for about the fourth or fifth time I spent time ripping my way through thickets and underbrush only to not find a cache I'm looking for. Getting home I check the cache's page to find it has been archived between the time I printed it and when I went hunting for it. I now know better and will always check the caches on the day I'm planning on hunting them. Hopefully this will help keep anyone else from getting burned like this. It was a nice walk in the woods anyway.
  16. I "checked" my Platinums waterproofness by letting it float in my hottub for a while. It does float and so far it hasn't affected it.
  17. You had to go and make foot prints on fresh ground. Now its not new anymore.
  18. Dunked my Platinum into a hot tub and grabbed it out quick. Once I realized it floated I let it soak for about a minute or so. Maybe the gin was affecting my judgement but I haven't had any problems with it since.
  19. quote:Originally posted by Zach and Shannon - Team Zen:I totally agree... There MUST be a warning. I say this because if I stumbled upon a cache at the entrance to a cave... You're darn right I'd want to explore it! And I have never been in one before... wouldn't have ANY of the right equipment. I would definitely be happy to recieve that warning. I'm fairly sure that a lot of people (like myself) would assume that the cache was there because of the cave... and since that was the case, that the cave was open (and safe) to explore. -Zach -Team Zen- http://www.mi-geocaching.org/ You know what happens when you assume. Just because a cave is open does not mean its safe if you are unprepared. It doesn't even mean its safe if you are. A small injury can become a major problem in a cave very quickly. My main concern is someone, or a group of people, finding an open cave and trashing it or passing the location on to others that will. My vote would be to not place caches near caves.

(And, I pay your salary, on top of it). _ http://www.arlo.net/lyrics/this-land.shtml _ The cop that hauls you off to the pokey is going to love you telling him that you pay his salary too. That ranger may not personally own the land, but he has a lot more power to make your life miserable than the other way around.

I knew immediately which cache you meant because I got into the nettles there too! Don't feel so bad about wearing your shorts...they got through my jeans! Bret __"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again."_ Mt. 13:44_ I ran into this stuff at a few of the caches I visited that weekend. Once I realized it went away quick it didn't bother me much. But mix it with the mosquitos and spiderwebs and you really start sucking the fun outta be outdoors. I'm going to be at Raccoon SRA this weekend, at least the time when I'm not underground.
  22. I had a lot of run ins with this stuff down at Turkey Run and Shades in Indiana a few weekends ago. Its the last time I go caching in shorts(one with sandles also). At least its only about half an hour of annoyance. Poison Ivy generally does leave me alone for about two weeks.
  23. quote:Originally posted by Brant:One thing I like to do is take my GPS when I am traveling on commerical jets. If I get a seat by the window, it sits nicely on my armrest. It is interesting to watch the speed, altitude and know what you are flying over. I'm flying from Chi-town to Denver soon. I'm gonna have to try it.
  24. I went with with the Glock 21 over the Ruger because of capacity. I happy I did. The next one will probably be the Tauris 617 Stainless W/ concelled hammer. I like something that small with 7 rounds. Now if IL would legalize concelled carry.
  25. I was wondering what those (W)s on my sat screen were. I only show two to the west of me, I'm in Chicago. I have not been able to determine if this is giving me better fixes yet. (edit)I'm using a Meridian Platinum
