Ridiculous external link window now unblockable and doesn't work

Hey, devs.   Would it be too much to ask that you make the "Hey wait!  you're about to leave geocaching.com" window's "Don't Show Again" option work before making the changes public?

I understand that the user experience is a very low priority with management, but I am now unable to make it stop.  The script I was using to block also no longer works since you've "improved" it and the "don't show again" option doesn't work, so using the site on the Web is basically like poking my eyes out with a hot needle.

pleasepleaseplease fix this.

My script should still be working, with the caveat that I never got around to adding support for discontinued page elements and links in comments.  If you’re using my script, could you please link the cache where it doesn’t work?

HQ, is http://adventurelab.page.link a supported way to create ”readable” links to adventure labs? That causes the pop-up to show... Also, why is ”Hey wait!” back in the pop up?

I just tested the behavior on one of my test caches and it works as expected.

Leave "Don't show again" unchecked and click OK=> next time I click the link the modal opens again.

Check "Don't show again" and click OK => next time I click the link I'm taken straight there, no modal open.

This functionality relies on a cookie and is good for 30 days once set for the link in question. Are you sure you're not blocking or deleting cookies after every session or one of your various scripts is interfering with the proper workings? Any of the latter may indeed render this non-functional for you.

Dear Groundspeak,

The fact that users are going to the effort to create/use third-party scripts to fix the UI of your website should be a lesson in what you should fix, not a challenge to thwart their efforts. Consider it free usability testing, showing you what changes should be made to your website.

I found that it remembers the link unnecessarily with all parameters. In my Christmas calendar cache https://coord.info/GC6NC11 you must Check "Don't show again" for every 24 days even the only difference is the query string that comes after the question mark in the URL.

That's correct and expected. It was the compromise we had to go with to get this greenlit by Legal. The alternative would have been no ability to designate a "don't show again".

Test (on both Firefox and Chrome): go to a cache page, leave for external page, modal box shows.  Return to cache page and reload.  Click on _exact same link_ and the modal box pops up again.  Rinse and repeat.

Cookies are definitely enabled.  Let me look....

ETA"  since this is so consistent across browsers (FF, Chrome, and Edge) I am pretty certain this is not a configuration  problem on my end.  To triple-check, I disabled my pihole and tried the page on my ipad.  Same behavior in both FF and Safari.

So I am sorry but something is broken somewhere.  And my view of lawyers is now even lower than before.

I would be very grateful for your script.  Mine was quite naive and the window appears to now be entirely from deep inside css instead of js.

And the "Hey wait" is indeed very annoying.

I have friends who are lawyers. Not all lawyers are created equal. But yeah, the ones that demand idiotic "you clicked a link" popups when the user clicks a link are right down there with the marketing types who demand similar usability nightmares.

It's almost too ridiculous to believe. Because of the existence of the "?..." querystring in the url? I can only imagine that's a technical difference and zero to do with actual legal issues. The website is the same, the destination URL domain. How pray tell would the lawyers care about whether there's a querystring or not? *baffles*

Unfortunately, I worry that it isn't the lawyers that are the problem, but rather a society that says when you do something stupid, it isn't your fault: the person who let you hurt yourself is legally responsible.

Or lawyers who don't want to, or can't, fight the stupidity and actually starting turning things back around.  Or, prosecution that's so good they can actually win the "danger hot coffee" debacle.

Mine is on greasyfork, listed under the catchy name "geocaching.com external url warning remover".

Thank you so much.   Works like a charm.

I tried the listener route when I first did mine but couldn't figure out where to put it.  Now I know.  And now I don't have to care (for myself) about the pain, but I still feel everyone else's!
