Statistics based on "Country/Region Counts"

Recommended Posts

It was Dec. 14th 2016 when I decided to track the number of waymarks per country to see which country has an increasing or stagnating number of waymarks. Since then I saved the numbers of the top 20 countries. Not on a regular basis, but whenever I thought about it. So, today I can show you the business chart I created for the countries 2-10 (the USA were too dominant to include them in the chart, and we all know that they are by far the #1) and another chart for the countries 11-22 (Isle of Man and Ireland overtook South Africa, which was #20 when I started and I kept South Africa in my list just in case they come back in the top 20).

So here are countries 2-10:

I found it very interesting to see that over the last 3 years nothing has changed in the ranking.

Now the countries 11-22:

Here we see that the development of the countries varies a lot. For example: Brazil had an almost constant number of waymarks for about 2 years and is now constantly increasing (mainly thanks to saopaulo1). And look at the line of Belgium. Belgium overtook three countries within 1.5 years or so. Impressive, no?

PS: Sorry for the low quality, but that's the best I could get out of Excel.

Well done.  The keeners in Belgium are making a difference.  At anytime in your research, did the order of countries 2 through 9 change?

No, never. When I started this, Australia had 358 waymarks more than Netherlands and that was the smallest difference within the top 10 countries for the entire time until today. The differences between these countries were (and still are) much bigger than within the countries 11-20. At the start Finland had only 60 waymarks more than South Africa, Thailand had 139 more than Denmark, Spain had 147 more than Austria and so on. It's not that difficult to overtake a country, if the difference is that low and especially if the country ahead is hardly adding new waymarks. That's why there were so many changes in the ranking within the countries 11-20.

I created another statistics to show the countries' improvement in %. I used the numbers of 14th Dec 2016 as a basis of 100% for each country and calculated how many percent they gained over the years. This way I ignored the total number of waymarks and the result is quite interesting:

Compared to 2016, Belgium more than doubled (233.23 %) their number of waymarks. In the graph I just included the top 10 countries. Here the numbers of the top 20:

Belgium 233,23
France 217,61
Germany 171,82
Italy 166,48
Australia 160,63
Austria 142,46
Czechia 134,36
Denmark 130,89
Switzerland 129,48
United Kingdom 128,07
Spain 124,20
Canada 123,52
Finland 123,39
United States 118,27
Netherlands 117,82
South Africa 113,77
Brazil 108,36
Thailand 105,93
Portugal 104,85
New Zealand 101,46

Well done! Especially the second statistic is quite interesting.

BTW: What is the global rate for this period?

Thanks.

Unfortunately, I just saved the numbers of the top 20 countries and not the amount of all the waymarks worldwide as of 14th Dec. 2016. But, I searched for all the waymarks we have and added a filter by "Published Within" - 1/1/1990 to 8/3/2019 (the date that I saved the numbers of the countries the last time) and the amount was 885,959. The next search I limited to the period 1/1/1990 to 12/14/2016 and the amount was 704,836. That's how I calculated the worldwide increase and it is 125.70 %. I'm not sure, whether this is correct or not. At first, I didn't trust my own calculation, because only 10 countries have an increase higher than these 125.70%. On the other hand, there are other countries that were not in the top 20, but had an even higher increase. For example, Monaco had 32 as of Dec. 14th 2016 and has 107 waymarks today - that's 334.38 %. And if enough (bigger) countries had such an increase, the 125.70 % and my other data might be correct.

With the USA hosting so many of the waymarks, I would think that the increase overall would be closer to the USA increase.

Well, yes, the USA have many waymarks, but right now we have 886432 waymarks, of which 506630 are in the USA. That's "only" around 57 %. And with an increase of 118.3 % the USA aren't that far from the global increase of 125.7 %.
