how can I hide a lab cache without hosting an event

You cannot. Lab caches are (mostly) awarded to Mega and Giga event hosts.

In the past, once, there was a period where any Premium Member could create a single Lab cache. My memory (possibly wrong) is that the cache they created could only be logged once. So it was created for a specific individual.

From a Blog in '13 ..."As this type of lab cache is currently in testing, right now the only way to obtain a Lab Cache icon for your Geocaching profile is to attend an Event where a Lab Cache is being offered, and find one".

Haven't noticed that it has  changed...

I have seen Lab Caches unrelated to events.  In fact, there are currently three in the Seattle area that are long-running and can be seen on the Lab Cache homepage. I've seen other short-term (weekend long) that were related to the local university, state parks, hiking trails association, etc.  I wouldn't be surprised if non-Mega Lab Caches are rare outside of Washington State, simply because GS hasn't been connected with organizations outside the area.

The Help Center info on Lab Caches says they "are often at Mega-Events", but does not say they are only at Mega-Events. Another section of the Help Center says that Lab Caches "are being tested at select Geocaching Mega-Events and community events."

If you are interested in creating a Lab Cache, then your best bet is to contact GS via their Contact Us page.

Why does it seem that the https://labs.geocaching.com/ page has not been updated in awhile?  I would love to know when / where lab caches are being awarded next!  Any ideas on where to find a more up to date list?
