Need help maintaining (simple microcache)!

Recommended Posts

We are moving across the country from Pennsylvania to Oregon in about a month. To commemorate the trip (and give us something to break up the monotony), we would love to place a few geocaches along the way when we stop. But in order to do this, we need your help!

We need local geocachers who are willing to help maintain them. To keep it simple, they will all be magnetic micro caches, so all that you'd really need to do is replace the log every now and then.

We will be on route 80 all the way to Salt Lake City, UT, and then taking 84 to Portland, OR. All of our stops will be quick access from these highways.

If you live near either of these highways and are willing to help, please give us a mileage range you'd be willing to work (ex. "I can care for a cache between mile markers 85-115 on route 80 in Ohio."). We won't have exact locations planned ahead of time, but we will make sure it's in the range you provide us, and no more than 10 minutes off the highway.

Thank you!!!

By asking I guess you already know about vacation caches.

I don't see it as much of a "commemoration" of your trip, if others need to maintain your park n grabs for you.

If you plan to place simple cache n dash micros, as "All of our stops will be quick access from these highways" implies, most areas probably have the exits and such already covered.

Why not place a quality container, in an awesome spot upon your arrival to Oregon?

Will you know the placement rules for each local area, and have gotten permission for the placements? <_<

Bad idea. Very, very bad idea.

Why would people want to take care of a bunch of throwdown micros recklessly placed by a total stranger?

This is a bad idea. And against the Guidelines.

You don't currently own any caches, so you probably don't understand the Review process. It's not like you can just throw a micro out the car window and poof..it's a cache listed here.

Before you even think about placing a cache, you seriously need to read the Guidelines over and over and over again.

Guidelines

https://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx

One very small snippet from the Guidelines that applies to this ill-thought-out idea:

Because of the effort required to maintain a geocache, please place physical caches in your usual caching area and not while traveling.

Caches placed during travel will likely not be published unless you are able to provide an acceptable maintenance plan. This plan must allow for a quick response to reported problems, and might include the username of a local cacher who will handle maintenance issues in your absence. Alternatively you might train a local person to maintain the cache. Document your maintenance plan in a Note to Reviewer on your cache listing. This should include contact information of the maintainer. The note will auto-delete on publication.

Posting the same thing over and over again in the forum is also a bad idea.

Why not use a trackable that YOU own to mark the trip?

A very silly idea for someone who has been a member for 4 months and only found 17 caches. A much better idea is to use the trip to find some special (unique, interesting, lots of fav points, etc) caches along the way.

I kinda agree with GeoTrekker26, with no finds out of the OP's State, they could spend a good amount of time (give 'em something to break up the monotony) by exploring the wondrous areas on the way to their new location.

But, if the placement of "simple microcaches" was a clue, looks like not much times's spent past gas stations and rest areas...

Please don't leave caches which are almost certain to become geo-litter very quickly while you are traveling. Placing a well-located cache in your new home area after you get settled is a much better way to commemorate your trip and one that you'll be able to properly maintain yourself. Be sure to read through the Guidelines for hiding a cache before placing a cache, as others here have suggested. Have a safe trip and take some time to enjoy some of the great caches and earthcaches you'll be passing along your journey.

+1

That could be pretty cool. Most often, Trackables are designed to fit small containers, but you can get as creative as you like. Not a lot of restrictions in that case. There's still some time for the OP to get some TBs.

Another popular idea lately, is to hold short Events (>30 minutes per Guidelines), to meet people during your travels.

I like the Trackable idea though.
