Would someone explain how geocoins are supposed to work? Are they supposed to be moved on? Are you supposed to keep them? Are they souvenirs?

A geocoin are a trackable... so Yes, it is supposed to move from cache to cache.

That applies to any geocoin found in a cache container, but there are exceptions, by the instance, if you find a non-activated geocoin, maybe it is a gift, so you can activate yourself... and then decide if you want to keep it or to drop on any cache.

Anyway... if you think that you are unable to help a given trackable to fulfill its mission, you can simply Discover it, without Retrieve it from the cache.

There are also geocoin collections, that you can Discover in events.

There's a nice overview here: http://www.geocaching.com/track/geocoinfaq.aspx'>http://www.geocaching.com/track/geocoinfaq.aspx

To answer your other questions:

Yes, you're normally supposed to move them on. You don't have to move them at all, though; you can always just discover them and leave them in the cache for someone else to move.

No, you're normally not supposed to keep them if they're already activated and belong to someone else. Sometimes (not often), it may turn out to be a new coin that hasn't been activated, which may mean someone left it for another cacher to pick up. You can check by going to this page: http://www.geocaching.com/track/ and typing in the 6-character code on the coin. If a page pops up that describes the coin, it already belongs to someone else.

No, they're normally not souvenirs. But by moving or discovering them, you get a digital souvenir on your caching profile, under the trackables tab.

I enjoy buying and collecting them, but when I first started geocaching it was common to find them, log them, and move them to another geocache. Now we have a visited option for our trackables to visit geocaches. I also allow other users to discover mine at events, but never place one in a geocache anymore after losing about 15.
