MacDD Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 As I will be in london this wknd (see other topic to help me out), what map is best to use; openstreet map or the garmin map? And why? Quote
BCNorwich Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 (edited) Hi, Talky Toasters OpenStreetMap, latest update is a few topics down to here instructions there as well. Why? Cos they're the best, made by us for us and exactly what we'd charge ourselves, free, you can donate for the service if you wish. Regards Bernard Edited September 12, 2012 by BCNorwich Quote
Graculus Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 You've not said which Garmin map you have. The default basemap that comes with the GPS or the topographical/street map or the Ordnance Survey Great Britain map? Chris Graculus Volunteer UK Reviewer for geocaching.com UK Geocaching Information & Resources website - www.follow-the-arrow.co.uk UK Geocaching Wiki Geocaching.com Help Center The default basemap is useless! The Open Street maps from Talky Toaster are probably the best. If you do have the OSGB ones they don't zoom right in so for built up areas they are not very goo Quote
MacDD Posted September 12, 2012 Author Posted September 12, 2012 I have the OS GB map. So, what'ss best to use ; OS GB map or Openstreetmap. In London. Quote
MartyBartfast Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 I have the OS GB map. So, what'ss best to use ; OS GB map or Openstreetmap. In London. I expect both will be good, neither are going to get you stranded, as for which is best that's probably going to be a matter of opinion. Quote
Bear and Ragged Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 I have the OS GB map. So, what'ss best to use ; OS GB map or Openstreetmap. In London. Ordnance Survey, if you have it. (Depending on what scale!) Talkytoaster is a good alternative. Quote
eusty Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 Not sure if it's because I've raster 25k OS maps (using Birdseye), but in a built up area I find the OSM maps better. Quote
Graculus Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 The OSM map is by the the better because it doesn't go 'fuzzy' when you zoom right in and shows you detailed streets. The OSGB maps will go fuzzy as you zoom closer. If you have the OSGB on a memory card you can install the OSM maps to main memory and simply switch between them in the map options.
